My new Sirui AM 284 US tripod

I have really been wanting to lighten what I am carrying, but my current small, travel tripod was just a little too small. I wanted "beefy" but small. I saw that Sirui had an AM 284 US tripod which fit my needs. 48", 2.7 pounds, 17.5" retracted, 33 pound weight capacity. I really like how tight it compresses when they eliminated the center column from going through the base or "spider". I look forward to getting out and testing and using it. The US designation in the name means it is only available in the US market.

thanks for the vid... just got one for only 135 US on Amazon. I have a tiny tripod and an extra large then a massive one but needed something solid but portable, this looks like the ticket!

H iDavid, after watching your video, I decide to get the AM-284. It arrived today with the SL-200 column. I took it out for a spin and I am absolutely delighted to have gotten it. It is very light and the beefy legs feel very solid. I am using it with an Acratech Ultimate ballhead and the combo is a killer. I hung my 10+ lbs. camera bag from the hook underneath the tripod to weight it down and it is as solid as my much bigger and more expensive CF tripod. Thank you.

I'm thinking about getting this, thank you for the review! I recently got into astrophotography, and after looking into sky tracking mounts, it's clear the basic, cheap tripod I have is not up to the task! This looks like it will fit those needs as well as any other type of photography! I will probably get it with the default ball head, as I don't own any ball heads, and I can always upgrade that later if I find that I need to.

Craig Campbell I am in same situation. Setup will be a 70 mm refractor with a motorised Mount. Tried out (without the mount) on the Gitzo 1542, seem ok. AM 254, without center column... not sure it is good enough for the mount.

@@davidakoubian3025 Yes I did, but I think I am going to end up getting a Sirui AM 284 depending on your review and use the one I just purchased more for my real estate work. It is a beast.

It's the SIRUI SL-200 Central Column Carbon Fibre about $30. It extends from 8 to about 12 inches. It's available on Amazon.

Hi David! Love the video. I am torn between the W-2204 and this one the AM-284. My plan is to use it for both wildlife and landscapes. Do you think either of them are sturdy enough for heavier lenses, and a fair amount of beach use. Thanks so much!

Sorry for the late response, I am just now seeing this, I think either would be fine as I use a 150-600mm on them, but the key difference is how tall you are and what head you would use. Again sorry this comment is so late.

i own SR3203 and fantastic for Sony FE200-600mm or Nikon 200-500mm. Do you think AM284 still good for those lens?

It would work depending on how tall you are and how high you would need the tripod to go.

Hi David, great video! I'm looking at getting a new light weight tripod that I can hike with, but that will also support my sigma 150-600 Contemporary. I'm on the edge about whether this tripod will really be sturdy enough or if i should go with something with a larger leg diameter closer your leofoto LS 365EX, like a LS 324C. Any thoughts? I'll be using it with about 0.7 kg of camera (Canon M6 Mark ii with smallrig cage). Would you trust this tripod for sharp results with a kit like this, or do you think you'd op for a larger one? Thanks so much for any response, it's so hard trying to navigate finding the right tripod without being able to try any out.

You can always benefit from bigger, and in this case, taller. I have, and love, the LS 365CEX. I also have the LS 285CEX, which is still taller and a bit sturdier.

Thanks for the video. Does the AM 284 fold up small like that if you have a center post added? It the tripod tall enough to use binos on a simple adapter at eye level for someone who it 5"10"? I'm a little concerned this tripod isn't tall enough for me to use binos standing.

The center column is something that screws on the top, so it would be larger when folded up. With the column attached it would be fine for your height, without it I think it would be short, depending on how tall the adapter is for a set of binos. The adapter I have from my Vanguards is about 4 inches. As I think, it would be tough since most of the time I am using my binos I am looking more at an upward angle.

Wonderful review. Can you share why you went with the 284 vs the 254? The price difference is approx $60. Also, I see this was uploaded in May. Do you find the short height a problem. I don't have a flip-up screen and will be using the viewfinder or LCD. Thanks!

Thanks. I felt that the extra sense of security (in my mind) that the 284 was worth the extra few dollars. The height can be an issue depending on your height obviously. They do make a removeable center column that I have as well if I ever need it.

@@robgerety the head would be outside of the tripod folded up, so it would add to the length overall. The reason it folds up so small is removing the center column from the design and making it an add on to the top. I hope that makes sense?

Hi. I am new to photography and videography. I want to take photos and videos when I am hiking and camping so I want a very light weight tripod so I can take it with me into the backcountry. I am looking at the Sirui product chart on Amazons web page for this product. I see the AM-254+A-10R option states the following: "4 Sections | ø 15 - 25.8 mm". I also see the option for AM-284+A-10R states "4 Sections | ø 18.6 - 29.4 mm". Can you please explain to me what "ø 15" vs "ø 18.6" means ? Thank you very much. ( Also if you have time could you explain the differences between the two head options for this tripod: "A-10R" vs "B-00K" ) ? Thank you very much.

The 25.8mm amd tje 29.4mm represents the outer dimensions of the largest leg section, the 15mm and 18.6mm represents the outer dimensions of the smallest leg sections. The A10R head is the one that is designed for these tripods.

@@newlifeeveryday1821 the A10R is a great fit for the lens. I have used my a7iii on it with no issues.

Is it ok to put a gimbal head on it? With a nikon d500 + 200-500mm for wildlife photography?

D I think the specs say it could handle it, but I would be hesitant personally.

max. height is only 47 inches, kind of hard on the back?

With the ballhead and camera mounted, it is just below 5 feet, with the LCD on mirrorless it is fine. Definitely not ideal for panning the skies for birds though.
