You never know what's around the corner! Take it from me get out there and enjoy what you can when you can! Almost 5 months ago I lost the ability to stand and walk, lift or bend my legs. Literally in the click of a finger. I don't know when I will walk again. I had so many plans to get out on the hills this year, and now I'm stuck in a wheelchair. I've only just managed to get my concentration back in watching videos again. Thank you for providing great content Gavin!!
Geologist here. I know nothing about NL geology but from what I saw, I'd say that the greenish grey rocks are a phyllitic schist. A metamorphic rock that was once a sedimentary rock full of clay minerals. During metamorphosis, the rock experienced high temperatures and pressures and the clay minerals were transformed into platy minerals such as chlorite and micas. Since these minerals are platy, they five this rock a schistose texture meaning that it has a layered look. Time and weathering causes the layers to begin to break down giving the rock a fissile texture meaning that it breaks into thin plates. The other rock appeared to be a quartz vein that intruded into the schist. Don't get me started on how that happens.
Spot on about the solitude. Dragging yourself out of bed at 4am with a face like the apple one of my kids left under their bed 4 weeks ago is made worthwhile when you can just stand somewhere in quiet as the sun rises without the sound of modern life intruding.
I used to go alone a LOT. Among my best memories runnin' around/ hunting, fishing, pictures etc.. But after having bumped my head three times now, my beautiful wife goes with me, I am sure (positive) there are times she'd rather not, but she loves me and she gets scared for me. No matter how many times I tell her to stay home, that she doesn't have to go. She goes. She has saved my life twice now...Getting older is a blessing, and sometimes a curse too. Another blessed day❤🩹All good!. Go get checked out when things do not seem right. I was too stubborn.. goes for all.... you too Gavin~ ( our favorite on YT) Mike
@@mazutcali9471 it’s a good idea to use a baby type umbrella that’s clamps on the the leg on rainy days Obviously no good on windy days but then photography is rarely worth it on windy days anyway
Something you might have overlooked with that hotshot umbrella, is that is pretty much a sail and in even modest wind will send that hassleblad t*ts over tea kettle down a cliff or lens down onto the sand/dirt whatever.
The rocks you were photographing are Metamorphic rocks that have been pushed up vertically from constant earthquakes. The Gypisum inclusions in the rocks are also from earthquakes creating gaps between the layers for the water to flood in and lay down the Gypisum. I also noticed that Amanda learned from you what appropriate footwear is at the start of the video.
Hello Gavin, I couldn't agree with you more about solitude and being out in nature, especially during your advanced years in life. I am 74, and have been into photography for a moment or two. (decades). I cherish the moments I spend alone with nature, especially in the early morning hours. It's my Photography Therapy if you will. Sure I take chances going alone, but life is a chance and you only get one shot at it. It's what I enjoy doing most, so be it. We never know what tomorrow may bring. Keep up the videos along with Amanda.
Solitude, the sound of nature, away from the din of the city. My kind of photography and I can get up at 4am with a face like a slapped ar5e and there is no one to see it! Perfect 😃👍
I like your message. You are completely right; there is no waisted time when chasing those perfect scenes. You are very funny indeed. Thanks and keep on enjoying the ride.
-Aristotle- , umm, Gavin, good point about getting out solo. You don't need to please anyone but yourself, and you are free to just take in what nature gives.
my goodness, the cliffhanger was so much worth! Joke aside, I do get what you mean about those moments about yourself, and somehow, photography becomes the best motivation to go and experience those moments out of time. Again, very beautiful photos you made there. Cheers!
Excellent video, Gavin. I had that moment of enlightenment this weekend shooting the Milky Way over in the Sawtooth’s, alone in the dark. Once I convinced myself that I wasn’t going to get mauled by a grizzly in the dark (startled at every noise in nature), I settled into my business of taking photos and 6 hours later I was shocked at how fast the time flew by. And I came away with some amazing nightscapes.
I like how you stuck the Wang Dang Doodle right in the center of the X-Pan pano! It's a shame it's a lot smaller than it looks in real life ... that's what she said! 😏
Wish I had thought about a bumbershoot attached to my camera years ago. All I had was a loving wife to go along on the backpacking trips and carry a pack with all of the food and a big umbrella and a ground cloth, etc. It always rained at some point during the day when we were backpacking in the Smokies and she very dutifully held the big umbrella over my 4x5 view camera when we were making an image... and she made the notes about the shot so I would know what development to give the film when we got home. I'm sure the little one that attaches to you camera and threatens to blow over in the slightest breeze is much better. 🤣🤣🤣 However, I do admire the shots you have made so far on this trip. Not every day can provide an epic shot and it makes you appreciate more the ones that do. One last note, at age 82 I do appreciate those quiet moments more. I get up at first light because I figure I'm not far from a long dirt nap and I don't waste my time sleeping. I go out on the covered back porch and set up my camera with the 500mm f/4 lens and watch the sun come up and the birds and animals begin to stir. I usually get three of four hours of being quietly at one with nature and getting a few good bird shots. I don't know if that is better than meditation or just my form of meditation but I do know it works for me.
Mate- love your vids and catch them when in the mood- have to say though that I find it funny that you walk past exactly the type of scenes I would go out of my way to photograph and you are totally oblivious to...LOL the buildings in their surroundings are stunning eg @19.44 when you are philosophizing.....that white structure against the backdrop of perfectly flat boring light bouncing off that boring skyline full of clouds- perfect light for that type of shot ... now that is a photographers photography man. Wakey wakey it isnt all about ARAT photography- ( another tree another rock) All the best Pete
0:49 that had me actually laugh out loud and usually the goofy humor doesnt work for me, but that felt really spontaneous. Anyway enjoyed the vlogs so far.
With those umbrellas on the hot shoe you should never turn the back to the camera. As helpful as this gadget is in pouring rain, it can quickly turn into a disaster, if it catches some wind. Nice video and glad to see you back after weeks of absence …. 😊
Aaww welcome back Gavin, our Sundays haven’t been the same without you and Amanda. Really look forward to seeing you both. Loving the umbrella so cute. Brilliant photos yet again, just follow the sun….where ever it maybe..love it.. See you next time 😊😊
I had a blast alone yesterday spending 9.5 hours driving through the Mojave Desert taking about 700 images, great therapy. I loved the Hassy accessory. The grilled-cheese review was well worth the wait! Safe travels.
Another enjoyable video Gavin. I see Amanda had her photography work boots on in the beginning. I love going out on my own to discover, it usually when I take my best photos. I like going out with a group too, but prefer to go by myself.
I made grilled cheese for my husband's dinner tonight, just before watching this video...almost as bizzarre a coincidence as finding an unexpected rainbow in your shot! 😮🤔😂
Solitude and quite are what I enjoy on a early Sunday morning well before prayers begin.Yes Gavin, I`ll take peace and quite over the sound of a diesel truck with a crew heading off to work.
I'm sure you've had loads of different answers about the rocks you mentioned, but it's simply decomposing shale and what you thought was gypsum is an exposed quartz and feldspar vein.... a cracking video as always mate, and that camera brolly was the nuts 🤣
Great berg hunting! Keep the burned grilled cheeses coming and by the way, I REALY don't mind the interupted showers! Stellar content! I feel like I'm right there with you with your comentary. 🐱
You should’ve gotten one of those umbrella hats instead. That would’ve been the business mate. Great drone shots Gavin. Looking forward to seeing more.
The official name for the yellowish stuff on top of the rocks is "bird poop". 🙂 Hope you washed your hands. Good video showing the way photography works. Lots of time and money spent, lonely times, cold, hot, hungry ... but oh, when you get that shot it's all worth it. Thanks for the video.
My only issue with the umbrella is the wind is gonna capture it and then it's going to make the camera move as you're shooting the problem with that. You would only be able to use it if there is no wind because as soon as there is any wind you also have the chance of the umbrella capturing in the wind and knocking your tripod over. You would have to be very careful with it. I think if you were using it and my issue is the wind buffing the camera and causing blurry photos it's a great idea but I'm not sure it's been really well. Thought it would only be useful in very rainy conditions which usually when it rains there's wind.
Small appendages and chafed nipples aside, this was transmendous, Gavin. Loved that X-Pan shot. Totally agree with your thoughts re the value of quiet solitude. It's a rare currency indeed.
Hadn't thought about it before, but I'm kind of surprised people would complain about hearing some life philosophy from an experienced photographer. Part of youtube is getting to know the person behind the still images and what they think about things is pretty integral to that. Unless it's just strictly a transactional relationship for them; "Just give me the photography info, I'm not interested in anything else." Those people should just buy some tutorials somewhere then, and stop complaining.
your videos are always interesting to watch Gavin, love the banter with you and Amanda, but if I am ever invited over for breakfast would you do the toast please, haha, the brolly looks pathetic, but it could really work, some cracking images as usual, love those strange scaily rocks in the foreground of the image, I agree about getting out for sunrise, it is so peaceful at that time of day, hope I didn't,t upset you in my last comment about your flip-flops, looking forward to your next iceberg adventure.
Hi Gavin, I received your book a week ago, it's another belter. I found that if you need to make a rainbow pop, just put on a circular polariser, it intensifies the colours.
Great shots with the drone. I considered one of those umbrellas, but if a wind came along, then that would be it. Would be a better idea to use a small gorilla pod attached to the tripod, but the again, if a wind picked up…..I’d also worry about it ruining my hotshoe.
Only guys can have a relationship between their balls and a drone 🤣 Where there's rainbows there's always a chance of a unicorn sighting, I'm surprised Amanda wasn't out taking pictures with her Hasselblad 😀 Not to be a Debbie downer, but if it's windy wouldn't the umbrella potentially add some vibration to the camera, but ya great addition Gavin 👀 ☂🌧. I'm surprised that after a week the grilled cheese sandwich was still crunchy, so satisfying 😋 Totally agree Gavin, when I'm at work I dream of being alone in nature it's so relaxing, it's like a mind reset 👍👍
Hey!!! did a video about having a umbrella on the camera a month ago ..... and the girl that sold it to med said size does´nt matter, mine is half the size of yours..... and i would/can not claim any intellectual property... no intellectuals where in my video! Nice episode as always
Searching for a camera cover, I saw that hotshoe brolly on amazon this afternoon and thought "Which daft wassock would use one of those?" Well, we didn't have to wait for an answer. I'd like to see you try that thing in the teeth of an NS hurricane ... beware of low-flying Hasselbalds ...
Those umbrellas , I had a similar idea Get a baby umbrella, the ones that clamp on the pram with a clamp. They are larger and will clamp onto tripod leg not camera. Enjoy the videos.
You better watch yourself @18:57 "They found him with his head inside a tin-pot crown Told him his feet stank and took him downtown Called him agitator, spy and thief Shut him up in solitary third degree ......." a great song for you to listen to on your photography road trips. Just Google the lyrics for the song 🤘
Gavin , when Amanda locked up the van door , she walked away leaving the ladder out ! What if someone nicked it ? You need to get a new one fitted to the camper 👌
StAnthony area on the great Northern Peninsula one of the best places to see iceberg, icebergs usually start turning up around the last week of March with the arctic pack ice.
Scruncheons, eh? Where I'm from in the North East of England, we have scrancheons, which are more commonly known as batter scraps in a chippie. I like the sound of yours better!
Hey Gavin, I see my name showed up at the end of the video. What a lovely gesture, but I must admit I thought I was signing up for Adam Gibbs’ Patreon.. since it was so cheap. You can keep the money.
Hey Gavin, I just checked the footnote of the image at 12.35 on the image as I believe you are using the 21mm. Sorry to be a nerd. Love your work and videos.
It's not just an umbrella -- In the wind, it's a parachute (or is that, camera hang glider?)... maybe you can get some impromptu aerials with the 'blad? 😀
