As I’ve gotten a little older (not old, just not a kid anymore), I have found that it is very difficult to stay committed if I don’t have an end goal I’m working towards (be it a marathon, a half, etc). That said, I’m excited to see how it goes for you.

This video has hit home to me. Being a firefighter for over 10 years now, a husband for over a year and a father for over 6 months. All round athlete here, I typically get between 15-25 miles in a week while still lifting all the major muscle groups on a 6 day training split. Works very well and I have to say it’s nice to break off from powerlifting and having a healthier cardiovascular system.

Same, switched off from powerlifting to hybrid style training. The powerlifting was starting to wreak havoc on my connective tissues. I do between 25-35 miles a week running, 8-15 miles rucking, and a 3-day split with days off when I need them.

Sounds solid man, I chased a 1500 pound total and reached it at 180 lbs. it was a goal of mine for years, after making it happen I kind of had that feeling of, “well what’s next” and so I reverted back to what I did when I was young and got to running, didn’t want to lose the muscle and the strength so I’ve slowly been falling into a split that mirrors what this video is about. Love Nick Bare, awesome dude, great programs, I’d recommend him to anyone as a fellow military dude, this guy is the man and he knows what he’s talking about it’s not just some fluffy BS some guy is trying to sell you purely for profit.

@nick bare what I need is a method to scale this to my current capabilities. Examples: you want 20-25 miles of running - what if I can’t do more than 5k right now? What if I can’t do pull ups? I know you’re personally doing this specific program, but it would be great if you offered some method of scaling… I’d offer the following: for aerobic running, use times, not distance, and zone 2 (or your MAF idea). And then offer a few substitutes exercises for this who can’t do it because of fitness or problems. Would be easy to do and could appeal to more people.

But as you probably saw doing the Ironmans and Ultras, once the kids are a touch older, you go back into those long endurance type races as an excuse to get away from the family! Endurance athletes have to sacrifice the one thing that family, friends, and work will always resent if you don’t give it to them - Time. It’s insanely hard to be an overall effective parent, spouse, and leader at work while being a great runner. You have to sacrifice one of those and it looks like Nick is sacrificing competitive running to focus on those. Good choice but it puts competitive endurance running into perspective. Until his kids are older and his company is big enough to be handed off to a new CEO, Nick probably can’t be a competitive runner until his mid-40s.

Frankly getting stronger always made more sense with that kind of muscle mass, rather than trying to be as endurant as possible, which was almost a gimmick. A true hybrid Athlete with heavy muscle mass should favor strength, whilst having some level of base endurance and possibly sprint ability. The only true other end of the spectrum is a much leaner skinnier runner who implements some minimal strength training maybe twice per week.
