this service call was created by a noise, only noticed by the person who was contracted to replace the air filters. this is a large manufacturing facility with a temperature controlled warehouse. the filter company replaced the filters and left the unit off. let's see if we can figure out where our noise is coming from. Give some good tips for any commercial technician working on a roof and some important things to look for during your package unit preventive maintenance.

Good find! That wheel is done for sure. They are lucky it didn't break apart and throw a chunk into any other components.Looks like that housing can potently even be reused, if they want/need to. We go through a ton of zip ties cleaning up nonsense wire management, in the end it benefits you and the customer like you said. Regularly cleaning up wire management, makes finding electrical shorts a breeze when you know the common rubout spots for each model. Plus, it is a treat to come back to a unit you cleaned up, when you can easily trace wires and take amp draws. making your future service more efficient. Great knowledge here for sure, thanks for the video!

Great video, I had a 25ton Trane condensing unit installed a couple years ago and the fan motor brackets broke , fan blade went right into the micro channel coils. Not even a month old. Trane had to repair.

Thanks, Subcool. It doesn't take much to damage those coils for sure.

Had it happen to me, except it blew the wheel all to hell. The wiring....well...it hasn't ever gotten any better....slapping lipstick on a pig. Except AAON they seem to care a little bit better than the big 3 do. Another great video Steve-o...thanks for sharing

Hey, thanks, Jason! I don't know if it's the wheels being junk or we could be running too many rpm. A tachometer check might reveal an issue

I take care of a building with a pile of 15-25 ton Voyagers around the same age as yours there. They’ve been one problem after another. Lots of consecutive serial numbers so I suspect a manufacturing issue. Compressors, VFD’s, lots of blower assemblies. I just order a new wheel, shaft, and both bearings. I’m not wasting my time trying to save the shaft and bearings. It goes alot quicker that way. Another good video man.

Thanks, Haldermand. I would tend to agree. It's easier if you have all the parts and will save you some time in the end.

Interesting find on what was broken and what was going to break next. I assume you wrote up all the PM stuff that should be done and let them decide if they want it done? Then what about all the same PM stuff on all those other RTUs? Things are out of control: need super knowledgeable tradesmen, stuff corrected that wasn't done right at assembly time, and no one wants to pay for any of it.
@EverythingHVACR

I did make notes about the issues I found. We can correct issues with this unit when repairs are made, then next time a p.m. is performed, we need to look out for the wiring issues on the others. It doesn't take long to secure the wires. We just need to be on the lookout for these issues. Thanks, Jay!

We installed 6 of those new Trane s 4 hrs out of town and when we came back found the blower wheel did the exact same thing and blew apart the spider and the wheel dropped. Luckily the belt blew off and didn’t make it worse
@EverythingHVACR
@EverythingHVACR 5 месяцев назад
Interesting, I had a feeling I was going to hear people who experienced the same issue. We're going to have to start putting a tachometer on these things in the field, I wonder if that would catch something on start-up. Or if that's even the issue, they might just be junk blower wheels. We do see a lot of junk these days.

The fins on the wheels are getting lighter and lighter when installing it even if you rub the fins on the outside shroud the wheel becomes unbalanced and each revolution it cracks along the spot welds where it joins to the arbor plate then its just time before it wobbles enough to hit the sides of the shroud, saw a tech try to weld one up he thought he was top dog at fixing it i told him if it doesn’t shake the bearings to pieces it will just break again , plus you have unbalanced it further by adding weld weight to it, buy new and install properly and dint accept damaged replacement from oem either
@EverythingHVACR
@EverythingHVACR 5 месяцев назад
Thanks, Kieran. I agree, if its out of balance, it will tear everything apart eventually.

On a building that big, who the F* sold them on rtu's? Should have been a chiller plant and ahu's
@EverythingHVACR
@EverythingHVACR 5 месяцев назад
Im not sure who sold them on rooftops. the building is an existing manufacturing building that is in operation. This was probably cheaper and less invasive to their manufacturing process, I would assume. The original building only had the office area conditioned and only exhaust in the warehouse.
