A rare gear related video from me! I've had many, many, many requests for a video showing what's in my pack. As you may have guessed, I am neither a gear head nor ultralight backpacker. In this video I show you what I am packing for my next adventure. For me gear is strictly for function and survival in the backcountry. It's not about having the latest, greatest or lightest. This is my style of backpacking. Choose what style best suites you. The most important thing is to get outside!

Getting into backpacking and it's refreshing to just see someone bringing what works for them. Nothing wrong with liking gear, but sometimes it feels wasteful, competitive, and unnecessarily expensive for the weekend or vacation backpacker.

Agreed. I’m a guy and I’ve tried, over 35 yrs to keep my pack no more than 30-35 lbs max for any run of the mill, couple day (3-5), trip. I prefer to keep it around 25 lbs. Hunting, especially in late season, 40-50 lbs with rifle and ammo and extra food. Been in SAR and I’ve seen guys stuck out due to weather that have ended up in bad shape, and all they needed was a little extra food and a warm jacket or poncho shell to get them through. Excellent video. I love to see a woman who can handle herself the way you seem to be able to. You’re not suppose to carry a handgun either, but I find the threat of arrest or find nothing to the thought of my bones crunching in the jaws of a cougar or bear. 😁

@treystripling921 4 года назад
Finally, a "Not so Ultralight" Realist!! I am always searching for lighter backpacking gear; I am a photographer and typically carry about 7+ lbs. of camera gear so I have to compensate elsewhere. But also because I like a few luxuries; I like to be warm; I like to be dry; and I like to eat HOT, good food. But the way some people carry on about ultralight backpacking and their ultralight synthetic clothing, and their survival tarp as their primary shelter and their cold soaked food....I'm just not into that whole 'fasting in the wilderness while naked,' kind of thing. Hence, my packs are generally heavy. So hearing that you typically carry between 25-30 lbs. made me feel a lot better about my own luxurious living while on the trail!

Hi Catherine, Thank you for the pack list. All good stuff. I too have a Big Agnes sleeping bag and tent. Agnes and I have been warm in all kinds of weather. I bought a tri panel solar charger that I can hang from a bush at camp, or put on the outside of my pack on the trail. It is nice to know that if I found a much longer adventure than I had planned, I can still charge my phone and reach folks that may be worried. I carry the bug screen thingies too. Nice to have no bugs biting my face and head all night. I like your gear choices. Smiling, George. ( the titanium pot is cool)

I saw an osprey too. Smiling, George.

@@CatherineGregoryAdventures Hi Catherine, The solar panel I have is a "SOKOO FSC-22 " 22 watt 2 port usb folding solar charger. waterproof is what sold me... I am happy with it, it was less than $60.00 and does not weigh much. I just hang it on a south facing limb or on the side of the tent, or on the outside of my pack. Pretty cool. I have had it for a couple of years now and I bet there are many to choose from. I like you, I hope this is helpful. George.

I just bought the same sleeping bag for my wife. She tried it tonight in the living room and almost fell asleep. Also just got the inreach also and used it twice so far. Thanks for the comments too about the bear gear, I wasn't sure what to do there. I haven't backpacked in 20 years, so just getting back into it. I loved the video about Shadow and Edzia lakes from Mammoth. I was there once, many years ago. I'm visiting Mammoth in 1 week, starting the wife and kids off with high sierra day hikes.

I too use the Osprey Aura, in the same color as you, and I love it. I tested the pack and carried a load of 46 lbs for a 7 day trip (Lol, I was a newb) Like you say, it carry’s all the weight on the hips and I had no issues. It was very comfortable. Since then I have learned to dial in my gear and reduce weight. I am currently at 32lbs of gear, food, and water.....and backpack chair 😉 for 7 day trips. I continue to make small changes but will probably keep my pack till it falls apart..... I hear Osprey stands behind their products and will repair and/or replace equipment for free. So I may not have to purchase a new pack for a looong time. 🤣 Thanks for sharing I am looking forward to seeing your next backpacking trip Happy Trails and be safe!

Have you considered "Life Straws"? I love them and for trails with a lot of creeks or rivers they are perfect to drink straight from the water without carrying water (obviously water pretty heavy to hump if not necessary) Then at night I just fill up my pot and my folding canteen. In the desert I carry water a gallon per day ( heavy but does get lighter LoL) Since I am like you and try not to change my outer clothes, I wear " Fire hose pants" super strong and reliable , a bit heavy but so dependable, I can brush up against a lot of stuff and not feel it. You really do a great job planning and your set up is very smart, great job Cat.... ....Keep living the good life, Cheers!

you use a lot of the same things I use. Love my air pillow. I use to use a Big Agnus bag but being a side sleeper it did not work well with the pad being in the bags sleeve...moving from one side to the other was a total disaster . If I slept in my back it would be fine. Big Agnus tent for me also...But Im looking into maybe getting a Tarp Tent....they are single walled and super lite and easy to put up. Bear Vault for me...and I agree..major pain in the A_ _ !!! I wrap my Nalgene with Duct tape...it always come in handy. I was lucky that I worked at the REI in Berkeley Ca. for 10 years so a lot of my gear was at discounted prices. Looking forward to seeing your next trip...Snow is in the prediction for Mammoth Lakes this week...Oh My ! Stay safe out there Cat...LOL to you on the trail.

Hi Catherine! I love your philosophy on gear even though I'm a gear junkie, not the latest and greatest stuff but that everything has at least one function. My sleeping bag has five functions: (1) sleeping bag, (2) blanket, (3) under blanket for my hammock, (4) poncho liner and (5) a campfire jacket. For wintry nights I couple it with the poncho to stay warm and dry. I am not an ultra lighter but I do weigh everything using a luggage scale and a kitchen scale. My summer weight averages between 17 to 20 pounds, winter weight around 30 pounds. On my first "real" backpacking trip in Arizona I hauled 65 pounds up into the Mogollon Rim but of course as a young stupid military man I was used to carrying heavy weights on my back. I made an attempt at ultra light but being a person who likes comfort it wasn't for me. I'll carry the Helinox chair, my Crocs, fishing rod (telescoping) with reel and a small tackle box and my favorite foam pillow. My Aqua Quest tarp can be configured into a regular tarp shelter, an A-frame tent or into a teepee. We all have our own philosophies and levels of comfort so I guess the old adage applies: Hike your own hike.

Your kit seems well evolved to your needs and desires. Ultra-light and ultimate style hiking is geared towards athleticism....cool and always keep an eye and open mind about those folks come up with, but if you are living and exploring in the back country, you need to have rock solid components. The only add I have to carry some water treatment like good tablets or Aqua Pura in first aid it a filter fails.

Except for the crocs your pack is about as Pro Hiker as it gets, but I like crocs for lounging too. 25lbs is a great pack weight for someone your size. One problem I've had is with sunscreen & bug repellents leaking so I've switched to carrying towlettes of each. Apply the sunscreen first though when you need to use both as it needs to absorb into the skin where the bug repellent should stay on the surface. I don't have one 'yet' but will be changing to a Nemo Tensor pad because they don't sound like an open bag of potato chips every time you move around. Happy Trails!

I’m not much of a backpacker but I enjoy watching you hike!😝 I’m thinking if you start bringing anymore stuff on trail you might want to borrow one of my miniature donkeys, they are strong & sure footed plus they don’t eat or drink much! 😝 Sounds like a great trip this week too. Cat have a great week can’t wait to see your next adventure!!! 👍👌🎉❤️

Hey Cath, loved this Vlog! A little different from what you're use to... looked like you enjoyed doing it! Awesome job setting up with no tables! Well laid out to easily show your audience. I own 4 Osprey packs over the years and luv them, matter of fact Osprey just replaced one of my old packs I damaged with a new one free of charge :) Learned lots from this on what to pack. I really liked the 2-way Garmin, such a smart choice for extra safety, peace of mind for you, family & friends when you're outside the zones. I knew you were going to like your new SONY a6400. The new videos looked clean, colourful landscapes, great AF, and you look great on it as well. Well Done!! Thx for sharing 🥂

I have the Xtherm and it is so warm! But I definitely do struggle with being comfortable on it. I used to have the BA Fly Creek UL2 as well and LOVED that tent!
@CatherineGregoryAdventures
@CatherineGregoryAdventures 4 года назад
Why did you switch tents?
@AmyRoutt
@AmyRoutt 4 года назад
@@CatherineGregoryAdventures My BA got ruined in this insane wind storm. (I mean, ripped the stakes out of the ground and everything). Big Agnes took it and fixed it up for me, for free (amazing customer service!) But it wasn't the same after that. I think there were microtears on the bottom, and I'd get water in the tent if it rained. And then all the sudden I was having issues with the zippers. And because I had a prodeal, I figured I'd get a new tent, so I decided to try something different because the Nemo Hornet 2P is similar weight. And even though I loved the Fly Creek UL2, I LOVE the Nemo just a TINY bit better with the 2 doors, 2 vestibules.

It's smart to get gear that last over if it's "ultra" light. Osprey is a great pack that holds 25 very comfortable.

I just took a short two day road trip over to Leavenworth, Wa and then to the Palouse and down to Mount Hood Oregon and the back home to Forks, Wa . Kind of a shake down trip to learn what I need for more road trips. I do plan on buying a super light weight hiking backpack tent etc because my cameras are so heavy. For those times I am hoofing it but even when I am in the truck I want to keep it simple and non cluttered.

If you can afford it, then definitely go as light as possible.

I think this video is realistic good job. It’s good to not get hung up on ultra light gear. Best thing to have is knowledge and you will inherently need less gear. What I have found in having more knowledge of the outdoors and gear, is that I get to bring more luxury items instead of a bunch of redundant items. Also through experience I know what works for me. I understand the point of having ultra light gear if you’re thru-hiking, but how often does the average person even do that? If you want to backpack and do some camping so you can enjoy the outdoors, don’t burden yourself with the idea that you have to rough it. We go into the outdoors to “smooth it” right? You would be surprised how much gear you can cut out once you get some experience and educate yourself with some old time bushcraft knowledge, It’s a great mix with some of the more modern kit items out there these days, go with quality gear that will last and can be repaired and never compromise a good nights sleep for a few ounces.

Catherine, I too am a RU-vidr and I've debated for several months about the 4k thing. I do shoot in 4k but backload into 1080 and whatever FPS it was shot. It makes the slow motions and speed ramping much smoother. I think storing and uploading 4k is a waste of data space and bandwidth. The human eye can't see much past 1080 anyway if at all. Hope this helps.

This was very timely. 😀 @Kim and I were wondering how our loadouts compared after we completed the Tin Cup Hiker (Toxaway/Alice Lakes in the Sawtooths) loop. We carried WAY to much food and some additional extras which we intend to weed out. We definitely need to shed a few lbs of gear. Thanks for the video and safe travels.

I think I am about to get the sony A6400. I want a little more functionality, and ability to do wildlife closeups somewhat better when I do PCT in a couple of years. I like the size, the videos seem to be of great quality, that ability to soom in on wildlife, insects, etc. Thanks for sharing. I will be fulltime vanlifer in about 1.5 years. Counting down the months. Waiting for that pension eligibility.....lol.....Perhaps we will meet on trail or road if you are still doing this at that time.
