I have to say, that as a consumer of these books, I agree with you (MC) here. Especially in fiction. As a reader, it's never really been distracting or confusing to me and is a strong tool to help rhythm etc. Much more realistic in my opinion.
Oh man... my group had a talk some 9 months or so ago about how Adventure groups are PTSD farms. Fighters greviously wounded, patched up instantly and sent back into the meat grinder of melee combat 4 - 6 times a day. Rogues pushed to the front of the party to search for and disarm deadly traps in poor lighting, only to then be accused of taking treasure secretly. Wizard's reducing their mysterious art to mere ways of killing as efficiently as possible while being expected to know the answer to everything instantly. Priests that spend their days calling on their gods to desperately keep a group healthy while they make brash decisions to conquer a Giant Stronghold on their own. Paladins tempted and often forced into vices and misdeeds for the sake of expediency, constant moral and ethical problems assulting him from every side in the chaos of adventuring.
Pistonrager I don't disagree with you on the fighter or rogue as a rogue, but there was a reason they used to be called theif rather than rogue. Wizards, though, I call bullshit on. Wizards' job was literally just to be REALLY intensely analytical and knowledgeable. The magic of roast goblin is just one application of that skill set. The wizard is literally the idea man, whereas the theif is the touchy-tinkery guy. The priest being a guy who calls upon the strenght of much mightier beings to lend that aid to their friends, that's just humility; and if your god/saint/whatever has a stance on the good vs evil and or law vs chaos spectrum, you also need to consider your morals and your group's morals. Because of that, I don't really get why the Paladin is part of the group. The Paladin basically fits as another fighter, and a backup man of faith and morals, but someone already fills those needs. Since there is nobody who's the a blend of wizardy solutions man with some skill at finding and disarming traps in the prptotypical party, why should there be a backup fighter or back up man of faith and morality?
I'd actually disagree. PTSD existed in medieval times, but it was weary rear. Modern PTSD seem to be mostly caused by long periods of stress+feeling helpless. The feeling helpless part is weary important! An airstrike or artillery garage is way more likely to cause PTSD then guys running ant you, sword in hand.
@@lvd8122 This is not true. People can get PTSD from any sufficiently traumatic experience. I know a guy who has PTSD from when he got mauled by a dog in the park. I guarantee hacking people apart with a sword is a horribly traumatic experience. The reason we have more documented cases in present day is because we are more aware of the condition, as with basically all mental illness.
I realize I didn't actually explain why I chose Fantasy over Science Fiction, but it came down to that conversation with John. When he started talking about Soldiers as Sin Eaters, I knew I had a main character and being that we were talking about psychology and ethics, that meant Fantasy to me.
I think it makes a lot of sense to prescribe psychology and ethics to fantasy. Fictional stories are all about teaching or exploring some aspect of morality and/ or character.
Sounds like good rationale. I think sci-fi can do more than you ascribe but I do like the social commentary notion. Similarly, I like how you define the "purpose" of fantasy but I think it can do more too.
I really love team styled stories as well. That's how I wrote my novel as well. I should have done it a little more your way rather than throwing it all into one lump sum, but live and learn. I'm writing new novels as well and they're going to be smaller than my first one, but they'll give a better story I believe any way. I love Cowboy: Bee bop...I want to make a character like Ed one day for D&D or Shadowrun game. Really enjoy your channel! My DM is new at DMing and watches your videos and has a lot of ideas like yours and its made some great sessions thus far. BTW, my wife is a hairstylist and calls you the guy with great hair when she references your videos...LOL! Stay fabulous!
Also, as an Army Veteran of The "War on Terror" I understood where your protagonist was coming from. Thanks also for addressing what we call Hyper-Vigilance. It is still to this day (10 yrs. out of uniform) difficult to feel completely normal in this world. I dig what you do all over this channel. I use an old Kindle Fire, and had already bought both Priest and Thief before the revisions. I was able to update my copies by going to Amazon on my computer, using the Accounts & Lists drop down menu, and going to "Manage Your Content and Devices." This lists all the books on my account, and gave me the option to let my kindle update Priest and Thief.
I've just started to read The Black Company, based on your recommendation, Matthew. After I'm finished, I can't wait to read the revised versions of Priest and Thief. I really enjoyed the original versions btw. You are a river to your people.

The Black Company is also my favorite fantasy series. Not many people I've talk to have read them, which is sad because anything by Glen Cook is awesome. Just picked up Priest, can't wait to start in on this series.
If you like Glen Cook, he also has a great series of books called Garrett P.I. It's a fantasy series written in a detective noir style. It's more light-hearted than Black Company, still a very enjoyable read.

Heden is Priest, Ainsley Pinwhistle is Thief, Teagen is Fighter, Heden's wizard friend is Wizard, and Aderyn is Paladin. Also Renaldo di Merisi should be Bard. Big fan, love the books.

Your comment on DJs picking out gems made me remember the first time I really started paying attention to your content. When I first discovered your channel about a year ago I started watching your videos as sort of background noise at work to keep my brain awake. I looked up at the screen from the papers on my desk and saw you were wearing a Crom Truise shirt. That instantly won me over. Since then I've come to watch your videos religiously but that shirt got my full attention immediately where it may have taken me weeks to start really paying attention. Thought it was an interesting tidbit to share.
Matt, I have always enjoyed your videos and I bought both Priest and Thief a few months back. I really enjoyed them both and wait patiently for Fighter to be released. Since your videos provide so much value to me, I don't mind the wait for Fighter, but am still excited for the story to continue. I got Priest and Thief for the Kindle App on my phone and burned through them so quickly because I could not put them down. Any time I had to look at my phone I was reading. I really really related to Heden, probably more than any other fantasy character I have written, and found myself often yelling at the Knights in Priest and laughing out loud in certain situations. When I finished Priest my heart had basically exploded in my chest and, like Heden, was replaced with white-hot anger. Thief was engaging and caught me off guard in so many scenes. Thats another thing! So many fantasy novels get bogged down in extraneous detail on things that ultimately don't matter and chapters become sagas, but your style of writing makes each chapter a cohesive scene and always kept the plot moving forward and kinetic. Thank you for these books, they inspired me to write again and I am super happy with the fantasy short story I wrote inspired by your work. I can't wait to get my hands on Fighter. One of my favorite things about creative writing is stylistically breaking the rules. Someone will tell me that something is grammatically incorrect and a lot of the time I just shrug my shoulders and go, "Yup." Glad to hear that you do the same thing! Haven't read your books yet but they are at the top of my reading list right now.

I just recently finished both of your novels, and I am profoundly eager for more. Actually, I got the notification about this video midway through the first and waited until I finished them to watch, just in case. :) I talked about the book to my wife, commenting on how I loved the way that Heden managed to seem seasoned, experienced, and powerful, but still struggled and overcame adversity. You wrote it well, Matt.
It's been a while since I've read a series that I enjoyed as much as these two books, I'd been kinda jaded on the fantasy genre. I'm a big fan of the videos and then D&D books but I actually think these may be my favorite thing Matt's done. The characters are complex without being a labyrinthine mess of contradictions and there's a great mix of shades of grey ideas alongside black & white ideas. The world being a parallel of the D&D lore, feels like an Sliders or Mirror Universe alternate reality of a world I know inside out so I don't need everything explained, but I'm gobbling up the lore inferred from the natural dialogue of the characters. Every once in a while I come back to this video and wonder what it would’ve been like if things were different. If Matt had finished Fighter. I understand he’s gone on to bigger and better things and I’ll be there for it, but I wish we could have gotten this whole series.
So, the first edition print of Priest and Theif I own are now collectable! Awesome! :) Looking forward to downloading the edited versions on my Kindle to see the difference. An aside and a thanks, as a Veteran with PTSD, you captured the essence of it (PTSD) in Priest, and I thank you for that. Not easy to represent something that nuanced in a fantasy novel, without having experienced it first hand. Tolkien did, but his references were experiential and his writing felt much more allegorical. You created a character in Priest that definitely resonated with me. Looking forward to Fighter!
I purchased both novels, and can highly recommend them. One of my favorite scenes in the second book ("Thief") has the main character fighting on a bridge with a former ally. Exciting and interesting and entertaining. I look forward to "Fighter". I also look forward to the completion of Mr. Colville's series, "Making a Fighter in Every Edition of D&D". (Wink, wink, nudge, nudge, say no more...)

Matt ive just recently discovered your videos and i love them. I bought a hardcopy of Priest and can't stop reading. The audio book test was absolutely awesome btw, hope to see that develop. Please continue doing this thing that you are so clearly passionate about, you are a hero to us all.
I did try to figure a way to make him into DnD, but obviously a lot of his powers are not within that scope. It definitely does read like a D&D story though. I really like the idea in this video you mentioned, of "assembling the team". The big question; will we ever hear about Heden's previous adventures? His past party?
I always pictured Heden as a high level cleric. Possibly with the war domain for sword proficiency, and because he has a history on the field of battle. While he isn't the best sword fighter, it's clear he's no slouch and he tries to avoid calling on divine aid if steel will suffice. It also has "stoneskin", which is a signature spell of Heden's if I recall correctly. We also know he can call upon divine beings if needed, so I would say he's at least 11th level, possibly 13th level for the spells "Planar Ally" and "Conjure Celestial". I'd also take some spells that add general utility in his role as a "sin eater". Some divination magic for his "God bothering" scene and the like.
I bought Priest shortly after I discovered the channel, and absolutely tore through it. I loved everything about it. The forest gave me a very "Gawain and the Green Knight" feel, like Heden was walking in a world that operated on myth and symbolism rather than logic and order. I loved that Heden is this 13th level badass who retired on a mountain of gold and magic items, none of which he knows what to do with. I love that somehow, the story of how Heden became a 13th level badass is fascinating, and I'd love to know more about it, and yet I never feel like Heden's past is more interesting than his present and his future. I've had Priest and Thief on the docket to reread for a while now, and the revisions seem like the perfect opportunity to sit down and actually do it. And I'll probably read them again right before Fighter comes out so I can have it all fresh in my mind. I swear, these novels and Rothfuss's Kingkiller chronicles are some of the only books that really make me want to go back and reread them before the next installment.
"I have no way of summarizing the novels to make them sound appealing." I'm so glad to hear you say this. The book (I've only read Priest) is a bit torturous. I was actually intrigued by the Hedon doing everyone's dirty work. Doing the things that the church would not allow yet everyone knew they were the only just things to do. But the situation with the knights not wanting to talk seemed a bit longish so I'm glad to hear that you shaved a few pages off of it. Despite a few moments where it seemed laborous, I never put it down so your definitely doing something right. I tried writing fiction a few times and its a real accomplishment to just finish something so congrats!
I've never been much of a reader, but your description of the ooks involving a large amount of gritty, dark fantasy with some very real themes such as PTSD have got me interested, that's exactly the kind of fantasy I've been waiting for!
Sweet more Colville videos always makes the week better. Really just felt like thanking you Matt. Since watching your channel I've gotten back into D&D and have even Dm'ed 2 campaigns of my own making. It's gotten to the point that I make sure my games have a Colville npc lol. I have also read Priest and look super forward to Thief when I finally get the chance. I really enjoyed Priest, I had the same wide eyed reading experience as I did when I started reading series like The Wheel of Time, and a lot of the Forgotten Realms books. Thanks Matt.

Thanks for the revisions. I read both of them on Kindle first. Liked them so much I bought them both in paperback, as well. I hope they are able to figure out a way to put the revisions out in print, I will buy those too. When I bought your books on Kindle, I was one of those you mentioned who purchased them to support your channel. But then when I read them, I was greatly impressed by how excellent they were, and how they spoke to me. I am looking forward to Fighter and all of the rest in the series.
I have followed your channel for about a year at the moment. From the beginning I was going to get your books, but only after this video I finally bought them. You are writing just the kind of fantasy that hits me and I red the Priest almost in one sitting and I´m starting the Thief soon. But already can't wait for the next books. I'm not a native English speaker, so there are some phrasing and words in your style of writing that slows me down occasionally, but I had no problem going through the text as a whole. In some cases I knew all the words, but a sentence didn't make sense until I went through it a couple of times to understand what you meant with it. But overall Priest was a great book and story-wise one of the best I've red recently. Have a nice summer and best wishes from Finland!
Matt I just finished THIEF. I have both the books in print and I live in Greece. They are wonderful man. I really loved the story and the characters and I absolutely anticipate FIGHTER with great excitement! It is funny, sometimes i heard the book in my mind with the voice you make when you narrate bits and pieces of dialogue from your DnD stories , but other times you disappeared completely and the characters has voices of their own. What an awesome thing to come to youtube and listen to you about the greatest game on Earth and through those videos get introduced to an awesome story! We live in interesting times :D Heden is an absolute badass!

I love listening to your ideas about the world and how you see it, I am addicted to how your mind works and find it very intellectually stimulating to look into. Also because of how you describe your writing style as being lean and muscular, I now imagine your books as being alive and flexing with buff arms and legs. That sounds funny so I might make that a creature in my D&D world, actually.
I was blown away by the "sin-eater" concept. Aside from the funny name the idea of a single action taking on society's burdens... that perspective astounds me.

Hey Matt! Read both books and am certainly looking forward to the next one. It took me way longer than I'd like to admit to realize Urq = Orc. I guess the best thing about them is that they do a great job of feeling real, like, you mention that you tried to make characters talk like they would, and not humor the reader with exposition. I really appreciate that. It respects the readers' intelligence and leaves us plenty of things to wonder about that the characters know well, but hasn't come up yet. I'd summarize Priest as a noir detective novel in a fantasy setting keeping with the gritter, not so much darker tone. It also doesn't compromise that tone for the sake of a happy ending. Thief is still kind of a detective story, but with more intrigue and action. Thief happens more in the world whereas a lot of Priest takes place in Hayden's head.
I bought two physical books before the fiasco and I'm still working through Priest. I'm really happy that you decided to make them available in paperback and I hope you will again. I'll withhold my opinion on the book here but I am glad you decided to get an editor! looking forward to fighter :)
Well, you were right. Downloaded the sample of Priest and was hooked so I bought both books and read them this last week. So now I'm, yet again, waiting for the next book in a fantasy series. Worth it.

Absolutely loved PRIEST. Wife bought me a Kindle Fire for Christmas last year and I bought the ebook immediately. Devoured it in a few days. Has the momentum of RE Howard, the curiosity of Herbert and the humanity of Moorcock. I would have finished THIEF by now but Colville has inspired me to action to work on a fantasy novel I had given up on about 10 years ago. I don't like to read similar genre to whatever I happen to be writing while I'm writing so I put a pin in THIEF for the now. But I cannot wait to jump back again. Heden is my favorite fantasy protagonist since Ulrich Von Bek.

Hi Matthew! I don't like to read book series until they are done, mainly because I can't handle the suspense of an incomplete story. Its drives me nuts in DnD as well lol. However, I do want to support you and your work so I'm gonna buy the books and just hold onto them until the series is finished. You have given me a ton of great advice and ideas about DMing. I hadn't DMed in 5 years and I just started a new campaign last week. Everyone loved it and a large amount of credit goes to all your great videos on DMing. Thanks for all the content and advice!
Going through Priest now and am enjoying it. I'm glad you got a professional editor even if I don't get to read the revised one. In... I believe chapter 8 there were three glaring typos and I debated being that guy that makes a youtube comment about it. Unless Priest ends on a helluva hangover, I've already got 5 books lined up on my Kindle before I get around to Thief, so hopefully by that time, Fighter is ready to go. Looking forward to it.
After having just sat my girlfriend through the whole of Cowboy Bebop - she came away loving it as much as I did 16/17 years ago - I really had more of an appreciation for how they got the group together, as you mentioned. It helped you care for the characters and the changes the group dynamic became part of the ongoing narrative. It was also a bit of a surprise to me, coming back to a show I loved half of my life ago, just how little Vicious was actually in it. Impressive just how effectively they not only wrote him but also the way they presented him during his scenes. God, I love that show.
I absolutely loved priest, even more so thief. I was pretty much hooked by the first chapter of the series and I'm really excited to read the rest of the series. Although I have a few questions, you said that you used your D&D world, is the setting a perfect replica or are there some changes, because I might be missing some information such as Ajax the Invincible overlord being unmentioned, or was that the king? Either way, still an epic book series so far!
The setting I've been running for the last two years is about 300 years before the books. And the Invincible Overlord is something I got from the Judge's Guild, so he won't be making an appearance in the novels.
Matt has mentioned before that the timeline of the books versus the Games he runs are vastly different. I think it is several hundred years separate them.
Hey Matt I've read both Priest and Thief. I found them both enjoyable! My review for Priest was the writing was lacking polish but story and characters were intriguing. I was inspired by you, and I started writing what is turning into a novella about some D&D characters that we ran not to long ago. So thank you for the inspiration and stories!
Hi Matthew I just wanted you to know that when I finished the 1st book i felt a burning desire to read the second I just had to get the next book. It has been a long time since a book did that for me so thank you. Now on to the 2nd book well it was as great as the 1st albeit a different style but where the 1st left me feeling like i needed the next book immediately this one left me feeling that if it were the last i would be content. All in all i am excited for the next and thank you again for writing such amazing books.
Just thought I'd say I read a lot of fantasy/sci-fi and honestly priest & thief are way up there in my top books. Priest definitely is my favorite book in the past year that I've read and have since reread it since the characters and world were so enthralling. We'll see what the editing has done to it but honestly I thoroughly enjoyed your writing style so I hope it hasn't changed too much. This is a pretty good excuse to go update and read through them again so I'm super excited! Although if Fighter ever comes out you'll have made my year (When there was all that talk on the secret project I got a little too hyped hoping it was the 3rd book).

I just finished reading Priest 5 minutes ago. It was an utter delight and I cannot wait to continue immersing myself in the coming books. Each and every character was fantastic, the pacing was perfect, and the story incredibly compelling. Heden is (in my opinion) one of the greatest fantasy protagonists by a long shot and the intricacies of the ex-campaigner "sin-eater" concept are a stroke of genius storytelling. I would say you have inspired me to finally sit down and write something myself but I'd just end up copying your work, it has left such an unwavering impact on me. So rest assured Heden will be making his way somehow into my D&D campaign setting, and hopefully I'll get the chance to embody the arrogate next time I get a chance to play. Thank you Matthew for such an incredible experience. P.S: Based on how Priest ended (Taethan proclaiming that Heden would've made a good knight) and how Matt said we've met all of the title characters, I assume that Heden is going to be our Paladin. But perhaps that is just wishful thinking.
I no longer start a series until it is complete. But once your's is done, I definitely plan on picking up all the books as it seems quite interesting. Here's hoping it won't be years.
