We rented in July and the broker would not honor the new law. Said he knew nothing about it. Buyer (renter) beware. Broker told us the fee was for the credit check and they charged us $100 per renter or guarantor - so we ended up dumping $400 into application fees for two college students renters and we almost lost the apartment, got into a bidding war with another applicant even though we had the application in first. It is brutal to rent in NYC.
Please make a video diving more deep into the finances of living in NYC !! Like how you budget and how much money each part of your life takes i.e. rent, utilities, phone etc - it would be super helpful and interesting!
This is one of the best/most realistic “how to move to NYC” videos i’ve ever watched as someone who’s lived in NYC (not manhattan) for about 8 years and moved every. single. year. lol.
hey, what do you think are the best / safe / artsy (i´m a product designer) / young / not as super super expensive boroughs of nyc? i´ve always dreamt of living there :)
Moving to NYC isn't exactly the easiest thing butttTttTtt it's so incredibly worth it!! Here are some time stamps to help you out! 2:52 - How to start your search & online apartment hunting 4:51 - The in person search & apartment viewing 9:25- How to apply & get your apartment
this is the type of videos I need! I wish many more youtubers from different cities could do one, helping us out here. but I'll start looking on my own, taking inspiration from your video and applying all the tips to a different city 🤗 thank you!
I am shocked by how expensive apartments in NYC/ the us in general are. I literally pay 350€ which I think is about 400$ - I have 2 roommates so about 1000€ total and I live in a wonderful central area of Vienna, Austria.
@@KiraDaBeastNY historically yes, it's getting worse though. Still very grateful to know that there are so many possibilities for less privileged folks.
@@guillermoortiz1492 Hi! yes, it's calm but not too quiet. it's been a year and a half and i have no complains about my neighborhood. I would see families, schools, playgrounds, churches around the area.
I feel your struggle!! I'm apartment hunting in NYC and theres like 4 listings total in the areas I want to live and it is SO stressful. Glad you found a place that feels like home! :')
i have been wanting to move to new york for the longest time and i am planning to in 3 years or so, you don't understand how much this video helped me. thank you so much, i wish i had a friend like you that guide me through new york. really really want to check out new york first before i actually move there and also love your all your content
Honestly you inspire me to want to dream big and accomplish that. I’d loveeee to live in NYC after school but I’ll see how that goes 😂 literally thank you sooo much for your whole series on living in NYC❤️✨
This video is so helpful and timely for me! I've lived in NYC forever (like, with my parents lol) but am about to start apartment hunting w/ my best friend - thanks for makin this :)
Honestly, what would be even more interesting to know is what do you do for a living to be able to afford living in NYC? For most people to be able to afford the luxury of living in NYC, they are most likely either born with money, in the medical field, or do something in finance or accounting. This Spring I will be graduating with my bachelors in accounting and business adminsitration (finance + management) and I've accepted a position to work for PwC in international taxation. While this may not be the most lucrative field out there I was surprised how little 95K will get me in Manhattan. I've been preparing a budget for the last two months now literally keeping track of everything that I buy and getting a feel for my cost of living, and it is making me exceptionally nervous to move down there becuase I want my quality of life to be adequate for the level of money I am making down there.
It’s so dope to see you progress from graduating college in California (same year as me!) to becoming so comfortable in New York. It’s been great to see :)
I live in a 5 room house in Southampton, England. With 2 bathrooms and a huge kitchen and living room and it costs £1200. I am reconsidering about moving to New York
I loved your video!! it was so helpful knowing these tips because I'm moving to New York in June/July and vlogging my whole process! can't wait to share my experience with everybody!! I'm a smaller youtube so Im also super excited to grow my channel
Really appreciate the info and transparency in this vid! Dont think ill ever move to new york lol but its very interesting to get a glimpse into how it can work
Ciao Elena, I have just a quick question. How do you usually get to see the apartments? Are there real estate agencies that can show you a bunch in one day for example? Do you organize it through StreetEasy for example? I need to plan that in advance since I will be coming from Baltimore for the search just for short periodo of time...
happily living in Prague but just seeing how incredibly expensive NYC is rent wise and then hearing people back here complain that the rents are too high is insane. we literally pay about an eighth of your rent wow
I’m contemplating going to college in New York (The New School) but I’m intimidated by the expenses and lifestyle. I’m from Nashville so I’m afraid I won’t be able to thrive well there. Also I don’t think I can afford living there, but it’s been a lifelong dream and I finally have the opportunity to do so! I’m just a curious high schooler trying to work out the logistics and practicality of it all. I need someone to sit me down and tell it to me straight!
Question: how much does rent increase annually in NYC? (like on avg. obviously). In Texas apartments can increase your rent by like hundreds of dollars per month each year you resign.
Do you need to have the fees/rent/etc. for signing in physical cash? I am moving to NYC next year and I am SO NERVOUS about being able to do this. I’m glad to know that it’s possible!
If I’m looking to move in August, when do you recommend that I start the apartment search in person? Would it be almost impossible to secure an apartment in March/April for August?
Do they ask for cosigners in NYC? How about proof of income? Generally, how possible is it for me as an immigrant to arrive and have the rent and a couple of deposits and no stable job? I'll be studying at NYU.
Damn for 5000 i would rent a big house with about 5 bed in one of the best areas of Miami, Miami is pretty expensive tho but seems like living in NYC is impossible for me, well ill be in my next life.
I knew that renting and buying real estates is expensive in New York, but watching this video makes it more like how can normal people effort this. ;D For 3350$ = 3000 Euro you can rent a luxury penthouse in Berlin.
Honestly not everywhere in new york is this expensive, its just that these youtubers choose to live in these expensive areas like midtown manhattan to try glamorize new york city for their vlogs to potray the carrie bradshaw new york image, but honestly regular people in nyc that work regular jobs pay around $1200-1600 a month for a apartment or have room mates and split the cost so they would be paying around $700 a month each.
Omg, I was looking for this comment! Like everybody is complaining about the rent in Berlin/ München/ Hamburg, but it’s actually not that high compared to NY 🙈
Oh my goodness so many questions. How do I find a sublet apartment? Where can I get my rental history? Who can act as a guarantor? I know it’s a lot but I’d appreciate knowing these things!
I talked about sublets in my video "I Moved to NYC On My Own..." so check that out there! Rental history usually comes from past landlords or anywhere you've lived in the past. Guarantors are almost always parents or maybe a grandparent!
Hi Elena, do you know any college students in NYC? How easy is it to find student housing for grad students? I'm thinking of sending some applications in this Fall
Wow I basically pay the same and live in a studio. I mean I don’t feel totally jipped bc I live in a luxury building with great amenities and a washer/dryer in unit.
If I am moving straight to New York and don’t have a job in New York when I move will they accept statements from my previous employer or what should I do?
I know this is more on a case by case basis but if you were to give a ballpark, how much would you recommend a fellow recent graduate from the west coast to have saved up prior to moving out to New York? It's a city I have always, always dreamed of living in and now that I'm done with my bachelors, no time like the present but the finances part is what scares me.
probably at least five figures ($10,000) if you have it. That being said, there has been lots of people who have moved to NYC with far less, and still managed to work with it. I'm thinking of moving to NYC myself, and the finances are also a concern for me, but from my visit there, there is all kinds of people in NYC, and not everyone is wealthy.
