My Observatory Quest: Sucess! The Search for Larger Skies!

In my last video on the Observatory Quest, I shared the design I had developed for a Roll-Off-Roof Observatory.
In this video, I will discuss our search for land over two years, how we had a mid-course correction on what we were looking for, and what we ended up with!
I hope this might be of some help to others who are starting a similar search.

Thank you for taking us along on your journey. In 10 years or so I think I will be asking myself the same questions about the hobby and other important things in my life. This channel is an example of what RU-vid is at its best … sharing your life stories. Thank you and appreciate the effort you go to, to create this content.

Thanks so much for taking the time to offer feedback- It is very much appreciated. I realized a while ago that the only thing I can authentically offer is my own experience. What I do, how I do it, and how it had worked out for me. I just hope in doing this, others may gleem some helpful thoughts for their own situations. All the best! Pat.

I'm 74. Should have moved from Milwaukee years ago when I was still working. Oh well. I feel more urgent to capture stuff. Far less time in front than behind. I've considered all you're concerns. It's awsome you have the where with all, to make this happen.

Thanks much for the comment. I don't think we fully appreciated how much work the move would be - maybe that is why we were willing to jump into it! :-) It basically consumed every waking moment for 6 months, and we still have a lot to do to "recover" from the move. But I think it will be worth it in the end. None of us knows what time we have before us, and it is good to make the most of it! All the best, Pat

I don't know about you, but I have far less energy than 20 years ago. I get everything I need or want to done, it just takes longer.

Great video Pat. I’m envious. I live in the Bronx and there are no clear skies here. So I have to go north to Rockland or Suffern or go to Jersey to get some imaging done. You’re not adopting any astrophotographers are you? Lol Congrats Luis

Luis - thank you for your kind comment. Living in Upstate NY and having to set up in my driveway each night has been frustrating, to say the least. But your note reminds me that others have much more significant challenges, and yet they still capture images. So I guess we all have our challenges, and it is up to us to play the game in a way that allows us to do what we want to do. Hat's off to you for having the drive to travel to better sites for your image capture!

really good decisions there Pat. maybe you may have mentioned this in previous video but where will the observatory go? is it uphill by north side? if so, probably bobbing those tree might help as there's no need to completely remove them. same for some of the trees on south-west and south-east side. this is a really good location with lot of potential for sure.

Yes - the observatory will be towards the N side. With the N-most trees, I should be able to still see Polaris for Polar Aligment - but due north is the light dome of Rochester, so no need to cover lower angles there. Toward the NW and W are trees that I will remove or bob, as well as the trees to the East. As is - it is much better than I had, and with the trees removed or bobbed, it is that much better!
