There are filter wrenches available through Snap-on or Matco that are spring loaded to expand over the filter with a three eighths drive hole to insert your three eighths ratchet. The sides expand over the filter and once you begin to loosen the filter the sides collapse inwards to grip the filter

Like you, I bought my first Goldwing in 2006 (put 209K miles on it) then purchased a 2022. Never had a stuck oil filter until the new Goldwing. Here is what I have learned about getting a stuck filter off: 1. Take your non-Honda (e.g. Walmart) oil filter wrench and mix up some 5-minute epoxy, spread inside your crappy oil filter wrench, and hammer the wrench on to the old stuck filter. Wait 24 hours. 2. You can now get your old oil filter off. 3. Go buy the Honda Oil Filter Wrench (~$15.00 in Tacoma, WA). 4. Next time you change your oil, CLEAN the old oil filter to remove the dirt from the outside of the filter 5. Tap the Honda Oil Filter wrench onto the old filter to ensure its fully seated. 6. Never overtighten the new oil filter. 7. I sometimes use a bolt on the Honda Oil Filter wrench to force the old oil filter out if it gets stuck once I get it off the engine. Cheers

Take the black filter cup and drill 2 or 3 holes around the perimeter of the cup on the bottom side. Run some 1” self tapping screws through the hole in the cup and into the filter. It will come off. I’ve had to do this a few times
@carsyoungtimerfreak1149
@carsyoungtimerfreak1149 4 месяца назад
There are 2 easy solutions to this problem. Which I know very well. Drill 3 holes in the top of your oil filter wrench. Put the wrench on the filter, put 3 self tapping screws in, securing the wrench to the bottom of the oil filter. 9 out of 10 times the filter will come loose. In real hard cases: open the oil filter (like a can), remove the internals. Now you have access to the top plate of the oil filter. There are 5 or 6 holes in that plate. Make or get a tool that has pins that fit into these holes, as far as I remember these kind of tools are used in the aviation industry, and you will get the filter loose.

You did the right thing carrying your bike to the dealer. I ran into the exact same thing the first oil change on 2018 goldwing. Tried numerous wrenches, no luck ,finally went through the filter with a screw driver.....BIG MISTAKE, the metal tore like paper. Finally had to take hammer and chisel to the base of the filter to remove. Great video.

As well as numerous other expensive power sports equipment. From time to time I have witnessed this shop has taken in other dealerships unresolved mechanical challenges and even other major brands! Absolute Pro’s. All of them. I know you last were there in 09. Since then, under new ownership in 2016, DFW Honda in Grapevine, Texas has worked to set a customer service standard to exceed customer expectations. Same with my 2023 CB500X. The dealer did the first service. I did an interim oil change at 4000 miles and had to resort to the screwdriver method too. I can't remember the torque setting now but when I torqued up the new filter I had to tighten it a lot more than I felt comfortable with to get the setting right, so no wonder they're a nightmare to remove.

Get the OEM Honda Oil Filter Set Part No. 15010-MCE-H51. It's the filter and the wrench, only about 3 bucks more than just the filter. You only have to buy it once. Also fits Honda car filter. Wouldn't have helped you in this situation but is worth having for filters that aren't already screwed up.

When I bought the bike I took it home and went to Arkansas and broke it in the hard way. I rode it so hard I ground up the pegs, front tip over covers and completely wore out the tires in 1k miles. They did the first oil change and had to use the same filter cap socket with set screw to get the filter off. Made me a hell of a deal on a new set of tires, free Honda Syn oil change, pegs and tip over covers. I laughed when they pulled out the set screw filter socket. The master tech a good friend of mine said they all need it. I inspected the new tires going on the bike and I went for a ride with my buddy on a couple of shop bikes and lunch with the owner. Bike all done when we got back. I've got a couple of those set screw filter sockets. But nothing as small as what's needed to remove that small filter. They do work well when needed.

had to wind up using a screw driver the first time on my previous dct. wound up putting a couple of different holes to get it to loosen up. was very careful because of the engine case right on the filter. I've considered getting an oil filter which has the socket nut on the filter. that oil filter cap with the screw is a very cool tool to have just in case. DFW Honda has always been great for me!

I had the same problem the first time I tried to change the oil in my 2021 Goldwing. I bought several of the cap type tools and they all spun. As you demonstrated, there is no room for any other type of oil filter tool to fit the Goldwing filter. Believe it or not, I stuffed a rag around and inside the cap tool, punched it on the oil filter, and it finally bit down and broke the seal. I was using a much bigger breaker bar socket wrench than you, I don't know if that made a difference.

I’ve never had a filter stuck on my Goldwings or other motorcycles. However, I have had oil filters stuck on vehicles. What I’ve done in the past is punch two holes in the end cap of the filter and insert two screwdrivers. I then use another screwdriver or a bar and place between the two screwdrivers penetrating the filter. I hold the two screwdriver handles and use the third screwdriver or bar between the two screwdrivers to turn the filter. This procedure has never let me down.

I recall 50 years ago helping my Dad with the oil change on his new VW Rabbit. It fortunately was accessible on the front of the engine, but every wrench we tried didn’t work. The metal compression band style just dented the can. Tried the screwdriver through the side but just ripped the filter apart. Which fortunately allowed access to the baseplate with a hammer and drift which finally did the job. Since then I’ve always gotten a socket style tool to fit the OEM filters. But you’ve shown that even that doesn’t work every time!

With my stuck on oil filter, I had taken my oil filter wrench (similar to your Walmart/Honda brand) and dotted the inside with about 4 or 5 specs (about the size of the head of a pencil eraser) of Shoe Goo. I smoothed those drops of Shoe Goo to conform to the curvature of the inside of the wrench and let it sit for about 15 minutes. With the Shoe Goo still being somewhat still tacky, I put the wrench over the oil filter and let it sit for about 2 or 3 hours. The Shoe Goo had given the oil filter wrench the traction that it needed. The oil filter came right off and I was able to remove the oil filter wrench from the oil filter once I had gotten the filter completely off the vehicle.

Very informative video. I've suffered the same challenge with a too-tight oil filter on some equipment we had. Fortunately we never had to resort to poking it with a screwdriver, but I've heard of that method. We were able to get a strap "wrench" on the filter and remove it with that. I've never seen the new filter wrench with the set screw. Very good idea.

I like the 3 finger design oil filter removle tool. Tightens harder on the filter the harder you turn the ratchet. I always push upwards on the wrench as I a turning it. That helps some with the cheap Walmart wrenches. As a last resort, and I have never had to do that, but I have seen others drill three holes through their filter wrench and then drive self-tapping sheet metal screws through the wrench into the filter and that seems to be pretty effective and a lot neater than driving a screw driver through it.

It's simple, take a chisel and hammer, tap the filter in the correct direction and it will loosen. It will likely only dent the filter a small amount. Also, the cheap filter wrenches that fit over the filter are not tight fitting enough for the Honda oil filter and easily slip as the lands are rounded on the filter. I've had to do this multiple times over the years with all my Wings....

I have changed dozens of oil filters over the years and have never had a stuck filter like this. Next step is a metal strap type wrench. I'll bring it to a pro before I ever put a hole in the filter.

So what's the brand and part number for that filter wrench?

Hey Cruiseman, I am in the middle of a 3000 mile trip, found my oil 3/4 quart down. Is that a regular occurrence? None of my other Hondas ever burned a drop. Mostly 4 cylinders, and two parallel twin’s….. dealer did oil change the week we left?

It's a shame DFW wouldn't give you the same price as Chattanooga. I had the same plan in 2001 when buying a new Valkyrie. Find best price in U. S., factor expense of getting to the bike and ride home. Fortunately, I found best price two hundred fifty miles away. Caught a flight, paid a cab fare to dealer and rode the bike home.Congratulations on the new beauty!

Yup, being under warranty I'd take it to the dealer assuming that they could see me right away. But, if I needed to leave the biker overnight (or for a week) then I'd likely proceed to other steps. I figure that if I went the screwdriver route and tore through the thin can then I'd rip it off and get into the inside of the filter with vice grips. The other option would be a homemade remover using a leather strap (like a belt) and build it similar to the rubber one you have. By placing the leather strap on and then wrapping the two ends around a longer torx bit and using a ratchet, the torx bit should lock up and tighten the leather strap. Dunno if that'd work but something else to try. Good to see that the dealer was able to successfully get it off though. Oh and no, I've never experienced an oil filter on that tight!

You are in the same situation as me. I have 400 miles on mine as of today. Got it two weeks ago. I would go get the filter cap wrench from Honda that comes as a kit with the filter. Clean the filter on the bike with a paper towel and some parts cleaner to get the slippery road gunk off. Then try to loosen the filter. I was able to get mine off and changed just the filter at 400 miles. Only a little oil came out and barely registers on the dipstick. I would try it soon. I think they get tighter over time. If it slips, you know you need to take to the dealer. Good luck!!

Good point. Thanks for the information. I will be riding to Chattanooga Tennessee in a week or so. 178 mile one way. When I get back, I should be around 800 miles. I will change everything. Thanks for the heads-up.

I have a clamp style oil filter wrench that grabs the filter and applies increasing clamping force the harder is it to get the filter to spin. Works well and I'd be willing to bet a good bottle of scotch it would have gotten your filter off with little issue. 🙃

Sadly, the OEM Honda oil filter tool (I call it a socket, rather than wrench) is not a superior item, as it's fatal flaw is, that they just spot weld the nut onto the socket. I had one break clean off with the very first oil change on my brand new 2012 NC700XA, which apparently, has the same breed of Gorilla on the oil filter installation line, as the Goldwings lol.

I had the same problem on my 23 first oil change. I got lucky and had am asmoil wrench that I could drive on with hammer, with all the room we have , and it finally came off.I had the same trouble with the first change on my wifes 04 monte Carlo this was after the dealer had done their 2 free changes, the same on mt 16 sieara. What are these people doing? Thats why the dealer doesn't work on my stuff unless apsolutely necessary.

My 2023 was completely jammed on as well. Not sure why they would completely over torque these at factory. This doesnt appear to be a random issue. My buddy managed to make a tourniquet out of a shop towel and box wrench and strong-armed it off! What should have been a 30-45 min job was close on 2hrs. Very frustrating.

I just did my oil change on my 2024 GoldWing and was expecting troubles from all the other comments from forums. I bought the cap type from a auto parts supplier. I took the filter with me to test the tightness and found that even the same part number wrenches had fit differences. I bought the one that fit the tightest and it worked, after tapping it on. The part I didn't think was going to be a problem was the transmission filter cover. I had a problem seeing clearly getting the cover on and managed to pinch the o-ring and didn't know it. I even oiled the o-ring. I ended up buying 2 new o-rings just in case, I had issues again. I even had some leakage on the oil plugs using brand new washers. I read that over tightening could be an issue as some were stating that Honda recommends 22ft.lbs. could be too much, so I just torqued them to 15. Well with new gaskets it wasn't enough, so I used the old, put the combo wrench on and gave it a hand tap and it was fine.

Cruiseman i have an oil filter wrench unlike any of the ones you tried and not like the they used at honda. I got it from wingstuff back in 2009. 100 percent it would have easily removed that filter without destroying it.

Us farm boys would just grab a pair of channel lock pliers and twist it right off. It’s worked dozens of times for me on many types of equipment. Place the jaws on the filter from the END not around the circumference of the filter. Before you try turning in a counterclockwise twisting motion, squeeze the pliers to partially collapse the filter so that there are flat spots where the jaws of the channel lock pliers will get a positive firm bite. Once it’s broken loose after about half a turn, it’ll come right off by hand.

Remember when installing the new filter to lube the filter gasket with oil. I'll bet it was installed at the factory dry, as well as being over-tightened.

I attempted to buy a 21 from DFW honda and they gave wanted to give 5k less for trade and had 4K in what they called ADM. They were very misleading and tried to be deceptive. Im glad that they worked out for you getting it fixed up. I ended up going across town and got a great deal. Also I was a diesel mechanic for several years and would work with stubborn filters sometimes. I had a metal banded strap wrench and they usually work pretty good. Also try using an extension to ensure only rotational force because it looked kinda crooked coming off. Hey it's Honda's mess up let them fix it.

Totally nuts. Going to DFW is the right option. I can't imagine how anyone put it on that tight. I'll be surprised if, by the end of the video, you're not seeing some damage on the original filter...

I hate them so called oil filter attachments, I ride a 2019 Roadglide and ALWAYS use a K&N oil filter, the filtration quality is way better than anything else on the market PLUS you do not need a oil filter attachment to get it off as it has a 17mm nut welded on the end, Im sure you could get one for your GW and never worry again about a stuck oil filter
