My OLD Tesla Model S Just BROKE. Now What???

Eventually it happens! Your old Tesla Model S goes out of warranty - and then it breaks.
We are used to this from old ICE cars, but what happens when an old EV needs a repair?
My old 2013 Tesla Model S (P85 Performance) is usually super reliable, but it finally broke down the other day. I checked with Tesla, and they wanted a very high price to repair it - much higher than I expected!
So I decided to try to fix it myself, in my own garage. How hard could it be? If it worked, I would be saving a LOT of money, but I had never worked on an EV before, and I'm only mildly mechanically inclined. Still, saving big money was huge motivation for me, so I attempted the repair myself. Was this a recipe for disaster? Watch as I try it @MatArmstrongbmx style!

If you read through the comments here, you'll see that even plain old door handles on ICE cars break from time to time. And having grown up with cold winters, I'm also very aware of how old school door locks could freeze and prevent access to the car. You also won't get trapped in a Tesla, just because the outside handle doesn't work. you can open it from the inside, the same way you do with any old school handle (the mechanics are exactly the same). I had my driver's side fixed a few weeks ago. It had the same issue. The Mobile Service tech told me it was replaced with a newer retrofit part and showed me the old part compared to the new one. The old one had a lot of parts and cables prone to breaking. I also had them fix the rear right passenger window that broke around the same time as the handle. I love my blacked-out 2015 TMS70. I'm about to hit 100K miles. Oh, I also had them fix the sunroof, which wasn't working correctly. The only thing my car "needs" is the infotainment upgrade, but that can wait. I mainly drive my 2020 Model 3LR and my 2019 TMX100D.

The funny thing is, the mechanical mechanism is there. If you pull the interior handle, it unlatches electronically (just like the outside handle), but if you pull it even further, it mechanically unlatches - just like any other car (which I appreciate for safety reasons!). A lot has been said about the S handles and their high failure rate. But I will say this: I absolutely love it, when the handles glide out as I approach the car. To me, that’s just an extra step of cool, that you don’t find on any other car, and that feeling still hasn’t gotten old 😄

@cadreamdrives
@cadreamdrives 6 месяцев назад
So - only the newer generations of handles can be calibrated. If you have the older style with the gears and microswitches, no calibration is needed. To calibrate, you need to get into the Service Menu and then disable the Gateway module. (You can google instructions for both - it’s pretty simple). Once you’re in the service menu, there will be an option there to calibrate the handles. It will also show you the generation of each handle, and whether or not they can be calibrated.

Thanks for the educational video for yet another reason not to own a Tesla. Who has time for broken door handles that fail at the most inconvenient time. I've owned ICE cars for 50 years and never had a problem with a door handle breaking. Since the window regulator on the drivers' door was getting ready to fail, I suspect the same will happen on the passenger side as well. Just think how much you saved on gas though, right?
@cadreamdrives
@cadreamdrives 2 месяца назад
Right - we wouldn’t want any of that new technology stuff! Probably better if we could go back to horse and buggy to be on the safe side 😄. The door handles on the S are definitely a weak point - or rather, they were. I think they pretty much have them under control now. There are other things that may be quirky. But isn’t that the case for all cars? And yes - think about all the money I save on gas. It does add up to quite a bit. And then add the money (and time) saved by not having to do oil changes, spark plug changes, brake jobs, annual service, and replacements of a million other parts, that fail on ICE cars. Not to mention the time I don’t spend at gas stations. The Tesla Model S has remarkably few quirks, given that it’s the first real car from a completely new manufacturer. It’s also incredibly reliable - much more so than any of all of the ICE cars I have owned. Add on top of that, that the driving experience is better in almost every way. I know new technology can be scary - and that many people love to criticize EVs. Many of them have never even tried one. I encourage you to try one out. You just might be surprised at what you find… 😊

This is the exact reason I turn off the folding mirror when the car is locked. Imagine how soon it will fail after opening and folding 4 to 5 times a day. Personally, the less tech the better, only when the feature is necessary. Tesla is basically a hibernate mode of a laptop so it is constantly using battery even if you don't drive the car - loosing about 1% a day by just parking. The old remote car key would be just fine because the car basically has to constantly figured if the phone or a key is nearby to unlock the car.

@@laframe1016Well, Highland Park isn’t that far from Newport Beach 😄. Buying a used Tesla (or really, any used car) isn’t for everyone. There IS a risk of a high repair bill (if the car is out of warranty). However, that risk is there with ICE cars as well. I’ve had engines blow up in both a BMW and a Jaguar. Both of them were just a few years old and both of them had less than 70k miles. Those bills were quite a bit more than a new Tesla battery… For me, a used Model S offers an incredible car for very little money - but you do have to be willing to accept the risk.

It is fun to drive. It handles well. I get 35 - 36 mpg in the winter and 37 - 41 mpg in the summer. I love this car. Ford could have had a hit on their hands if they didn't stick with the DCT transmission it had. That killed the vehicle. Since I've only been driving manuals since 1991 though, it was a no brainer for me too. I also bought it with 16,000 miles on it, and saved $8,400 off of sticker....because used manuals don't sell well. With 164,460 miles on it now, it may be my last car. Still runs perfectly.

How much longer do you have to drive that Focus for losing the bet?
@1001Hobbies
@1001Hobbies Месяц назад
@@AStanton1966 - This will likely be my last car. It still runs and drives like new. I've done the regular maintenance on it (I am previously an auto tech and I've worked on cars my whole life). It has been the most trouble free car I've had and it is fun to drive. Without the horrible DCT transmission there are none of those issues. Today's cars are not much more than over-tech packages that collect data that violates your privacy. Many cars have large screens in them that you HAVE TO LOOK AT in order to use heater controls, or to jump from one specific radio station to another. This requires you to take your eyes off the road so that you can be sure to touch the exact location of the images of buttons, instead of being able to FEEL actual buttons/knobs without looking. The notion that controls in a car are done that way, making you take your eyes off the road, is insane. Today's cars track HOW you drive, WHERE you go, HOW OFTEN you go there, how MANY people you take with you, and if they are adults or kids. This data is collected at any time by the manufacturer (you didn't believe Over-the-air Updates were for your convenience, did you?) and then sold to a data collection company. It is another source of income that the manufacturers make off of you. Then that company identifies your insurance company and sells your information to them, and THEY make money off fo you too. Then your insurance company looks at the data and see you slammed your brakes on several times, and you accelerate faster than they like. This makes you a "risky" client and they increase your insurance rate. There are already a number of videos here on RU-vid of that happening. Please take 4 seconds to search for them if you don't believe me. The light that comes on when you have something kind of heavy in the front passenger seat that says "Passenger Airbag Off" is there to keep the airbag from harming children when they are in the front seat. However, that same sensor is on all the seats so that the car can collect info on how many people are riding with you, and if they are adults or kids. I am choosing to opt out of that by not owning one of these newer vehicles. Also, my car has been paid for for years. I bought it when it only had 16,000 miles in 2014. Original sticker price was $22,400. I only paid $14,000 for it. Because it has a manual transmission there wasn't as big a market for it, so it was cheaper. I believe I am the one who is laughing loudest.

Every single automobile ever made will have something break on it someday. With a legacy auto maker, foreign or domestic, their customers have a large network of dealers and private auto shops to be able to repair their vehicle. These newer auto makers don’t have that luxury. So these customers typically have a much longer downtime without their vehicles. That’s a big issue and a deciding factor for many potential customers
