after watching a similar episode on “the thought spot” with irene, i decided to do my own version reacting to aita reddit threads about autism. most of these submissions are from people who are not autistic regarding people who are, but some are also from the pov of autistic people! regardless of the submission, i chose to keep everyone anonymous for this episode. quick disclaimer: everyone has different feelings toward different situations. i am someone who sees things in a very black and white way, although i recognize that not everyone thinks like me. your thoughts/opinions on these stories are valid and i would love to hear them if you want to comment below!

The story about the person being approached by a co-worker was exactly the same scenario that happened to me. They were autistic themselves and it was during a work party where he noticed my behaviour. That was actually the main catalyst to start looking into diagnosis. For years I always thought I was different. Getting it affirmed from an outside perspective really helped me figure out I was along the right lines. This happened a good 2 years ago now but it got me thinking about seriously looking into a diagnosis. Which I got formally diagnosed earlier this year!

that's awesome! i'm so glad it was helpful to you. do you think generally people should speak up about thinking someone may be neurodiverse?

@@beyondthespectrumpodcast I would think that, given I was in the position where being told was actually life-changing in the grand scheme of things, I don't see a reason why it shouldn't be discussed in a discressionary way. Personally I would only do it if I was 100% sure. I'd have to know the person a little bit first. Such as a collegue or a friend where you get to see their behaviours over a period of time. I would never just go up to someone I don't know very well.

@@rahyrarpg1600 that makes sense! i'd probably do it if i was 100% sure too but it would take a lot to get there for me haha

I agree with most of your points, but I don't think saying "I think I'm autistic" or "I might be autistic" is a good idea. It's basically a lose/lose situation, since the people who would look down on your for being autistic will still do so, and other groups of people will also look down on you for not being 'diagnosed properly'. It's honestly no one's business about anyone else's medical information so there should be no need to clarify if you're diagnosed or not. On top of that, the healthcare system is pretty much a hellscape right now, and most doctors know less about autism than any random autistic person does. (I'm also autistic btw)
