Can you use straw instead of hay ? I’m always afraid of bugs in the hay.

Yes you totally can. However, it's really hard to find straw that hasn't been sprayed with anything. Most wheat farmers spray their fields right before they harvest the wheat, which can reside in the straw afterwards - if that crap ends up in your garden you're in trouble.

@@1870s Our straw hasn't caused problems. Your garden is fenced in. Hoping my potatoes won't get eaten by hungry visitors. Love your channel. You work so hard/canning too. In our 70's. Never tasted veg. so good, that I can remember. Be blessed with bountiful harvests.

Here in s.w., mo., We grow tons of fescue. The seed is harvested, then the rest is baked for straw, for bedding and etc. It's not sprayed, do great to use for anything garden wise. Not as pretty as wheat straw, but cheaper and works great!

I was talking to my grandma about growing potatoes this year, and she said in their garden when their kids were little, they would have green mashed potatoes with all the green potatoes that “weren’t ripe yet” 😮 i guess eating a little green isn’t a big deal. 😂

There's nothing like homemade potato chips, deep fried slices of potato. Just grab some salt, and some cooking oil of your choice from your pantry and some thinly sliced homegrown in your garden - simple ingredients for a simple snack.

Questions: 1) With all that you grew and raised, what stuff do you still buy monthly/weekly at the grocery store? 2) Also have you ever considered or planning on getting a milking cow? 3) Also do you ever buy beef/pork/chicken at the grocery store especially certain cuts for a recipe? Or only use what you have stored?

We still shop for some things. Doubt we'll ever do a milk cow, meat cow yes someday. We also do buy certain meats and sausages sometimes.

Thanks for showing how you plant your potatoes.I tried the Ruth Stout method this year and loved it! It's so easy, I like not digging a fork into the soil since I always end up spearing some potatoes in the process.

We have a good storage area, so we save all the green ones to use as seed potatoes in the spring.

A plastic milk crate makes a great seat for working in the garden. Easy to move over when working. Close to the ground for weeding or picking, but easier to get up. Water proof if I leave it out. Warning some of the newer milk crates are very thin, make sure when purchasing one it does not buckle under your weight.

Oh my goodness, digging in that straw without gloves. I have so so many wolf spiders in my garden that I don't dare dig around without protection, I realized I was holding my breath while you were digging. I think I have a spider for every square foot of garden.

Some potatoes you buy in the grocery store have green on them and they sell them. You just cut the green off. You can still eat them.

I've had several potato's pop up in my compost bins. So much fun. This is my first year growing some in a container. Next year I am going to be doing a bunch more.

I had a mole nibble on some of my potatoes and I even caught it in the act when digging them. I didn’t do any hilling, and I also had some green ones. But potato digging is literally my favorite garden “chore”. I did covert my potato bed to a bush bean row, and found a few straggler potatoes.

you can use the small potatoes to make "papas arrugadas" a typical dish from the Canary islands, if they are the variety to boil not fry

Beautiful potato harvest! I set anything green aside as a seed potato for the next year. It's my first year trying just setting the hay on top instead of slightly burying the starts before laying hay. Mine will be ready in a couple of weeks, but I brought up a couple of whoppers yesterday for dinner!

Green potatoes happen in our sandy soil also. I had to pull some of the straw because we have a really bad white C grub problem. I water a lot and then the sand shifts about and the potatoes poke up here and there. I did notice like you said some started to resprout. Not sure if we could do this method because of snakes and mice. Lol, you wouldn’t think I’d have both, but then there are also gophers. Plus I would have to find some old hay. Nice haul!

It is fun to harvest potatoes! This year Im growing mine in dark blue totes from lowes, because in ground is a bit of a pain here in my clay soil. I will need to harvest mine in the next couple weeks because I didn't get them in till late May. This year will be my first time potato canning. Thanks for the pleasant visit.

I grew potatoes this year in a modified Ruth Stout way. I did bury them just an inch or two into the dirt then covered with straw. I added straw twice throughout the season and got a decent little harvest. Nothing like what I was hoping for but know now what I need to do for next year.

So pleased to see a great garden harvest! I had to delegate my garden this year to a paid helper one day a week and a none gardening OH as I had a hip replacement at the very wrong time to be laid up and out of action, and not even able to go & supervise. One bed of potatoes has been a disaster, as "earthing up" was a compost sprinkle, and no watering. The second bed of Ruth Stout is about to be lifted, and look much better as the "add another layer of straw" was done well. Great Harvest .... looking forward to your next potato canning!

What a nice potato harvest. My potatoes wouldn't take, I only have 1 plant, my garlic & onions are harvested so I'm gonna throw some in that bed, hopefully I'll get a fall harvest late oct if I'm lucky

I grow in ground potatoes and have the sunburn issue also. It's like you say, you have to hill them up and watch them closely. That is not easy to do when you have the rest of the garden to take care of and the rest of what life brings. Great yield. Thanks for sharing!!!

WOW what a nice harvest! It's amazing to see how green everything is. We are going to harvest ours this weekend. not sure if we will have any luck with the drought but we will try. For some reason our sweet potatoes are not blooming, not sure why. Water, sun and feed but no blooms. Always good to see yawl, God Bless. Mike

Another great harvest to reward you for your efforts. I wonder how you’ll cope with the your “sabbath” rest next year, I’m pretty sure you’ll find it challenging in some ways as you’re normally so busy harvesting and processing.
