Great video! I prefer Penguin over any other publisher and for the same reasons as yours. And a tip for Bulgakov's Master and Margarita: Goethe's Faust and Bulgakov go hand in hand. Start with Goethe and a lot of things in Bulgakov will make more sense and intensify the reading experience.

Loved seeing which penguin books you have. I don’t appear to have many penguin black spines on my shelf but that might be that I had some and un-hauled them after I read them. 🤷‍♀️ Anyhoos thank you for sharing this with us!!

I like the older Penguins with the yellow cover. I just like the art on the cover page. I like World Classics. They are almost like the Penguins. I like to see uniformity on my shelves with my classics. But if I want a copy of a book and I order it used, I have to get what I can get. If you read Hardy, be prepared. He is not a romantic, he is a natural writer so the themes and stories do not all end well. But he writes beautifully. He will take you on a nature walk and you really see what he describes. Unbelievable! Thanks for the tour.

I also have multiple copies of Madame Bovary, including the same little market paperback you have, which I had to read in college.
@Shellyish

Did you like Madame Bovary? I feel reluctant to read it for whatever reason.
@jorgem71962
@jorgem71962 10 месяцев назад
I have read it three times. My favorite translation is the one by Lydia Davis. I find it a book to be savored for lack of a better word. Emma Bovary for me is not a likeable character, but the story is so interesting and so advanced for the time it was written. It broke the conventions. It captures provincial life in France in such a way that as a reader, I felt that I was there. I am willing to re-read it if you want to do a buddy read later in the year. @@Shellyish

I love Penguin books. I don't focus on buying a certain publication and instead pick out which cover I like best. That said I love the Penguin English Library editions. Swoon I also like a lot of the Penguin Deluxe series

Good morning. I love collections of books. I have every book that has won the Pulitzer Prize for Literature/Fiction. Some of them are the Franklin Library Editions. My partner and I just redid our basement. We now have this huge space divided into two rooms. One is her office and the other is my office/library. I just need to get a comfortable chair besides my desk chair. I still need to do some shelf organizing and an unhaul. I love books.

I read the 2003 translation _Don Quixote_ by Edith Grossman and enjoyed it (I laughed, I cried). That one was from Harper Collins. I think your Penguin edition is the 2000 John Rutherford translation, which should be good, too. My earlier attempt to read an 18th century translation I found to be unnecessarily difficult.

Oooh! Just checked out Penguin Nature Classics (didn’t even know this existed!) and found The Land of Little Rain. As someone born and raised in SoCal, I have spent many wonderful vacations in the various Southwest deserts. It’s on my Kindle wishlist now! P.S. I’m gonna have to put on my big girl pants one of these days and try to tackle The Count of Monte Cristo…. That page count is intimidating.

I never thought of the newer design of the regular black spine line being more inclusive....but I actually hate the new design :P idk it just looks cheaper to me and less classic looking. And I like the contrast between the author and title, instead of looking exactly the same- especially for titles that are names. I know they're such small details but I also don't like change and it's worse when you don't like the changes, lol! thankfully I know it'll take a while for them to switch over to the new design for AALLLL the books available in those editions (hopefully) btw the edition of Memoirs of Hadrian (30:36) is from their Penguin Modern Classics line, if you didn't know/realize.

It was a sad day for me when I got a penguin classic that wasn’t a floppy book.. every single other if ordered ether online or second hand have been floppy. I have now 1 random stiff penguin book lol do you know anything about Penguin Epics the greatest stories collection? It a collection of 20 books but I cant find anything online about these editions, I found listings on eBay for them. … I think the saying you might have been trying to say was ‘the rose tinted glasses have come off and or ‘the dust has settled’ - seems you might have been combining the two? 9:97

The scales fell from your eyes😊 Re the Wallace Stegner controversy, he partially based his book on the life of Mary Hallock Foote and her husband. Mary was a writer herself and kept journals of her life, from which Stegner borrowed heavily without attribution. At least some of the beautiful writing in the novel is actually Mary’s. Some have defended Stegner by claiming that since Mary’s journals hadn’t been published at the time, there was no copyright violation. Technically, copyright exists from the moment of a work’s creation. However in order to file a copyright infringement lawsuit, the creator has to officially register his/her copyright before doing so.

Penguin black spine classics used to be my go-to but I really hate the new version! Not only for aesthetic reasons. The quality has been downgraded as well! The covers are thin and easily damaged! And, they now use this cheap, gray paper across their range and the printed text isn't as sharp as before. I much prefer the Oxford World Classics these days.
