AS sphagnum moss availability became less and less, I started to try out other potting solutions for my vast Phalaenopsis collection. Well.. it did not go so well and today we are ending the experiment!

Thank you, thank you, thank you! This is my second winter trying my hand at saving and growing grocery store orchids. Thanks to you and your videos, I now have 2 plants sending up flower spikes! I am so thrilled! Total orchid plants I have had is 14. 2 gifted orchids had "bugs" when I received them and they died. I'm glad you told me to isolate new plants. 4 plants just couldn't be saved with my limited experience. The roots were gone and cores were rotted. I didn't have the skill to save them, even following your guidelines. A month ago the flower spikes were coming out. I'm sure glad you told me they look a lot like roots to start. I didn't keep records at first so I don't know what colors these flowers will be and I don't care. I truly believe you taught me enough to get reblooming plants. Thanks again.

Thank you Danny for showing this set up. Since I first saw your videos I adopted the same set up with a few adjustments to my environment. My orchids are doing great!

I’ve layered coco chips with the sphagnum to wick.. I soak the the coco husk chips and rinse them for several days to lose some of the tannins first. It’s just getting harder to find good affordable bark so that’s why I tried that. It’s working ok mixed with some sphagnum moss.

I had a little Phal in the same condition and I tried everything I could think of and nothing worked so I potted it in all sphagnum moss with a layer of bark on top and it has done well ever since! I have 5 out of 7 phals with blossoms or just flower spikes right now.

The nice thing about coconut husk fiber (coir or cocopeat) is that it is otherwise a waste product of the coconut-growing industry. So its environmental impact is small. But if it doesn’t work for you, use something else, of course.

If your having a hard time getting sphagnum moss you could try growing it yourself when you have more room. I don't use nearly as much as you but I do manage to keep a stock going. I use large transparent storage totes with a thin layer of rehydrated moss and some live moss. I add some very dilute fertilizer water, seal them and stack them against the wall behind lighted grow shelves or at the ends of the shelves. Every six to 8 months I pull out a 3-4 inch mat, cut off the top growth and replant. As long as it isn't baking hot it should work for you as well.

A "free" advice regarding pot :) I use "faisselle" cheese pot, they are perfect and already have holes (the pot inside the pot of faisselle). I suppose faisselle can be found all around the world. Else few weeks ago I tried to repot a cheap orchid with coco bark, and it seems it does'nt appreciate, I have the same result as in the video, but late I read that coco has to be rinced many times and stay hours in water to get rid of tannin which would'nt be good for orchid ??

I went away from thise big chunks of cocos husk, they can hold a ton of water and stay wet far to long. Now i use cocos fiber ( long very lose fibers) mixed with bark. I work well for me were i live ( the Netherlands).

Hi Danny, can you explain how you watered your orchids when you where in Romania ,it would really be helpful to "Balkan Orchid Society"😅. I'm struggling to adapt my watering technique in this climate ,soo if you remember how you did it it would really be quite an insight in how to advise good watering technique. If not ,thank you anyways, your channel helps a lot!❤️

Hi MOG! I'm new to your channel via Garden Answer. I've acquired several orchids over the last two years as gifts for birthdays, etc. and would like to know how to identify roots vs flower stems that are forming. Short of going through the hundreds of videos you have on your site to find the info I'm looking for. Do you perhaps have links to a few that would help me identify the information that I'm looking to find? Or is there a separate search engine on your RU-vid site that would allow for such a search on my own? Any & all help you could direct my way would be greatly appreciated.

Hey, Danny, no relation with this video but I have this question: my Cycnodes Wine Delight went from flower drop to new growth without going dormant and losing its leaves. Why is he doing this and can I help him go dormant by cutting water and fertilizer altogether? Also, I have a very young, single bulb Catasetum tenebrosum that began losing leaves. Do the young catasetum orchids “behave” as the adult ones? Do they too lose leaves and go dormant (meaning I have to stop water and fertilize him)? I guess you could adapt a bit the question and include it in the new “What will happen if…” series. Thank you in advance! Have a great day!

How about combining sphagnum moss and coconut husk? You know, put the moss at the bottom and lead it like a wire to the top. I think it would be suitable solution for phalaenopsis which you receive in bark. Currently I am trying out this solution before I can transition them in sphagnum/bark mixture. The moss could even the moisture and coconut husks would suck more water than pure bark.

Watering with a light solution of hydrogen peroxide can solve your lack of oxygen in the water for the roots. Approximately mix one part of 3 percent hydrogen peroxide with two parts water in a watering can. It breaks down into the soil and releases extra oxygen.

I'm with you! None of the suggestions are working for me! I'm also trying sphagnum moss. Why are you keeping them in solid pots? I thought they would rot there.
@jenniferkenny
@jenniferkenny 6 месяцев назад
Her environment is incredibly warm and drying. She has mentioned many times that most people and their watering habits benefit from slotted pots, but she would ultimately have to water 100’s of plants multiple times a week- some daily if she continued to use the set ups she used in Romania. It’s really about finding what works for your environment, and your watering habits.

How many times have you repotted this particular Phal? I have one that I think I need to repot again and it's just not doing as well as I think it could be.

Mine is 80% pine bark and 20% spagnum moss, it works for me very well, watering my orchid once a week in summer and once every 2 weeks in cool rainy months, by the way I live in the Philippines near the beach so it's kinda hot here in summer, I grow my orchids in indoor setup cuz I don't have space outside 😅, and I need to be economical because I water them with drinkable water, bec my water source is very hard and has a chlorine in it 😢

The issue with coconut husk is it has a lot of salt. I’ve tried it with phals and even after multiple soaks in hot water, it still seemed to damage roots. I’d guess that the way most people water phals tends to be some form of soaking and maaayyybe that’s allowing residual salts to cause root damage. I’ve still got a bag and may try it with a cattleya or two to see how that goes.
@deemaxwell4172
@deemaxwell4172 6 месяцев назад
Don't buy the coconut husk sold for reptiles or pets. Many plant sections of hardware stores now sell coconut husk that is pre-washed but more expensive than not washed. If it is not, you must soak min 4 hours in boiling water and repeat 5-7 times to get rid of all the salt. Then it has to be dried - yes it takes time but by laying it out on trays and mixing it several times a day, it increases the humidity of the room, so that is a bonus.
@jenniferkenny
@jenniferkenny 6 месяцев назад
I would like to add that I don’t think trying it on cattleya roots is a great idea. They have notoriously sensitive roots to begin with.

Think in this case it wasn't the mix, but this mix was to wet for too long. (rootrot) Or the coco wasn't washed out enough before potting. (rootburn and -rot because of salts)

Terra cotta chips work for me. Not too small, about 1/2" (1 cm) seems best. The commercially available product that we can get in the US has much smaller granules that pack so tight that roots have a hard time getting through it. 1/2" chips have plenty of air spaces and the chips themselves stay moist but not wet, so no problems with root rot and also no long-term breakdown in the media. Water from the bottom, it wicks up through the chips slowly and it's almost impossible to overwater.
