@@AlysonsPianoStudio Have you tried any others? For some reason I thought jumping straight into his 6th would be a totally fine idea. lol. it took me a while to re-learn that one properly

@@Adam-cc3zdI played that first one for my senior recital in April and spent a whole year on it. So then I took a break from the book😂 But I also rlly liked the seventh one and loved listening to Yuja Wangs performance of it. His sonatas are not easy.

@@AlysonsPianoStudio Yeah, they're some of my favorite pieces but are so daunting! Someday I'd like to be able to play 6-8 and 3. Many many moons from now

As someone who just started playing the piano, I really appreciate your insights on how you approach practicing pieces. Once again, thank you for the upload and for providing additional motivation to improve!

Super helpful video. I tend to forget to be more diligent and thoughtful when I'm drilling. Great reminder on how to drill well and then come back to the bird's eye view at the end of a practice session. Sub earned for sure.

Alyson, I love your videos. Could you make a video on the following piano topic: suddenly forgetting one section (a few measures) of a piece you've been playing for years. Every once in a while this happens to me. Like my fingers inexplicably lose all muscle memory for a few bars, and I have to either stop playing and return to the piece days later when hopefully my brain resets, or I have to relearn that part. It doesn't only happen to me, does it???

Thanks so much for your comment! Definitely. I’ve played a lot of pieces and a lot of them slip by if I haven’t looked at them in a while. It’s normal. It’s kind of like if you speak Spanish but then don’t speak it after 10 years. It might be a struggle to get back into the groove but you will find it’s actually easier to get back into it rather than if you had never seen it before. It usually takes me about 10-20 min to get it back in shape.

I think that most beginners who look at youtube performances as their standard, especially if they are self taught do not have the knowledge of what chords they're playing beyond the absolute basics and will not be able to dissect a piece of sheet music like you're doing here.

You’re absolutely right. This video was aimed more towards advanced players. But I will try to push out more beginner friendly content as well! Thanks for the comment 😀

@@AlysonsPianoStudio that's totally fair, I didn't think many intermediate and advanced players are still pondering why their playing isn't performance ready, so I jumped to a conclusion that it's meant for beginners.

@@123SLM123 You make a great point. For many years I was in the “somewhat intermediate stage” and I wished someone would have told me to concentrate more on the theoretical aspect. I focused so much on motor skills. I never knew why I could never master certain pieces and retain it for longer periods of time. I’m hoping this video is an eye opener to not only mastering pieces efficiently, but also practicing to learn faster and more material.
