My Pick Kits

This latest installment in my periodic "hacker gear" video series focuses on the pick kits that I tend to have with me, either in my pocket or in my bag. (Yes, the green bag which was seen in this video • Hacker Gear Video - De... a little while back.)
I did a blog post some time ago (still seen online here... words.deviatin...) where I talked about pick kits that I carry, but it has become outdated. Hence, this video was born. :-)
I plan to update this description with some links to various items you see in the video when I have the time. For now, I can say that the case itself was a gift from a locksmith friend back in NJ years and years ago. The closest thing to it nowadays is this zipping and folding leather case by Southern Specialties / Hard Case Survival... www.hardcasesur...
The picks and turner tools are all based on ones we produce and sell via TOOOL... toool.us/equip...
The traveler hook, mini jim, warded picks, jigglers, ez decoders, impression file, cuff shim, and tiny comb tool are all available at Red Team Tools... redteamtools.com/
The 5-in-1 key metal key decoder gauge is made by LAB and shows up in various supply catalogs... www.americanke...
LAB also makes those tiny pinning tweezers... www.lockmasters...
Lockmasters is also a fine source for safe lock change keys... www.lockmasters...
It looks like Barret Brockhage sells the old Weiser shim tool... www.lockpicks....
The folk at SEREpick are the only good source I know for the diamond wire blade... www.serepick.c...
If there are any other questions you have, don't hesitate to ask! :-)

This is a very practical kit. I am one of those "bring everything just in case we need it" types of people. So I end up looking like I am going on a three week hike when all I really needed was a couple of tension tools and a couple of picks. You never know when you may need a full size key cutting machine in your bag..... 🤣 🤣 🤣

I started carrying a single-sided jiggler with my keys a while back, and it's been useful a couple of times when I had friends with a lock problem. It also added a pleasant little jingle when picking them up. Thanks for the video. Locks should be taught in public schools. It's practically a branch of Ethics with how deeply the concept of locks and physical barriers pervade our lives, despite mostly being virtually meaningless to anyone with the least bit of practice and experience. Person A: "Damn, it's locked..." Person B: "Technically..."

Your kit really caught my eye . The zip up leather pouch looks identical to a kit given to me 40 years ago from a fellow who had worked for a particular 3 letter intell agency . He said it was "issue from the early 1960s" . The inside pockets look a bit different from yours and it has many similar tools as yours . Very interesting video and thanks .

Nice kits. Looks almost identical to mine, only my main kit is a bit bigger, and I have the entire K18 kit in there, but I lack the 2 keys (Schlage and the other). I have a tensioner for tubular locks, though one of these days I'm going to make one of those key picks for tubular locks. I like the handcuff key on the tensioner. I have half a dozen stashed randomly on my clothes, but I think I'll be making one like yours, thanks for sharing that idea. Oh, and I have a heavy duty prybar tensioner that I made out of a dinner knife. For those times you run across a deadbolt that's horribly bound once you pick it. Beats bending a tensioner, or having to carry a screwdriver. Also nice for all those times when you have to tension a lock towards the jam, but the doorway or moulding is in the way.

Those mini spiral spikes are the new duct tape I carry one good Peterson on but also three of the China ones of various thicknesses they work as extractors but also go good for tubular picking and if I need to make a quick rake or something else I can rub them on the cement to take the burs out and then bend them to what I want with the multi tool for 3.50$ aud you can do the dirty take the goods and leave if need be cut the plastic off with the multi tool and leave the wire and plastic in the lawn grass, office carpet, office cork board ect then it's just trash on the ground and not something I've used or something to pick up later.

I agree with you on the pick to tensioner ratio. I prefer the SSDev profiles plus a wide array of tensioners. I'm still looking for a good source for EZ Decoders and Quick Sticks. While those are useful, they are each way too big to be in the cell phone case or in the golf bag. :-)
@grayeaglej
@grayeaglej 5 лет назад
@@DeviantOllam Thank you for the reply. I figured they would be too large/bulky for the cellphone case, and maybe too big to cut down (and still be useful) for the golf bag, that's why I mentioned maybe just pocketing them or putting them on a keychain since you often mention that traveler hook as your main entry tool the majority of the time. Just putting a flat handle (like most picks have) on it would be a carry improvement I would think. The one I have from Harbor Freight has a big obnoxious orange screwdriver handle but it still goes in my pocket no problem. (Came in a pack of 4 "O-ring picks" for $2.00 a couple years ago) But I wouldn't mind something a little more concealable in the hand.

How do magnets work? That is quite easy: due to unpaired electrons their spins can align and give you an effective stray field. Or of course if you want to think of it in the more realistic band model: the density of states around the Fermi energy is different with respect to the spin and therefore one type is accumulated if the bands are only partially filled. I hope that answered all your questions ;) To be serious: I am writing my masters thesis related to magnetism and I don't understand all of it...

I think I wrapped gaffer tape around a sharpie marker as the basic original form. :-)

Haha yeah I know that :D I am pretty new and started beyause I locked me out ou my car ( wich was not hard to pick) but alot of the stuff you see online is not the case here in germany for some reason I have for example never seen a doorgap where something that thick would fit trough to push the pin back :P like the vids tho
@danpowell806
@danpowell806 5 лет назад
@@tim8505 I've seen double-door fitment so bad that just pulling on the door would swing both of them open. That was only to a utility room, but the utility room in question contained a control panel for the badge-controlled doors, which controlled access to an office that contained a safe containing literally Secret information. And also mop buckets. smh

I heard this guy was really bad at picking locks.
@pvtgoose19
@pvtgoose19 5 лет назад
Ade Larsen if that’s true, he wouldn’t mind admitting that. As he’s said, picking locks is almost the last resort to bypassing a locked door followed only by destructive entry. Picking locks is like picking noses: avoid doing it, especially in public. Prefer a more discreet and easier method. All that to say, I’m pretty sure he’s not that bad ;)

@@adelarsen496 So what's the point of talking hearsay? Did you even validate that information before sharing it? Did it have a purpose in sharing it? Is there a need to share it? I'm not shooting the messenger, just saying there really isn't anything to benefit anyone in this comment.

Are there any documented cases of someone needing an EDC lock pick kit?
@Ghost_Os
@Ghost_Os 5 лет назад
Documented? Possibly not. I run into it a fair bit though. Visiting friends, you all walk out to go somewhere, and as soon as the door closes, "Shit! I locked my keys inside!!". EDC lock picks to the rescue.

I do sound for concerts. Several times over the past few years I have used my EDC kit to open the locks on gear trucks where someone has lost or forgotten their key. Saved the lock and saved the show. Documented! :-)
