The hardware quality (for the time), the Vita library, the compatibility with the PSP library, the ability to play PSOne Classics on it, and the synergies with the Playstation TV and PS3 to essentially facilitate a "Switch-like" experience for a lot of games before the Switch was even a thing, will forever make the Vita one of the best consoles of all time, and no one will ever be able to tell me otherwise.
anemic hardware for the time garbage library ps1 games work just fine on original psp nobody cares about playstation tv bizarre interface its garbage and the fact that you think its great doesn't mean it actually is
The vita is still one of my all time favorite handhelds especially when you mod it. Full psp built in as well as all the homebrew and emulation that can be done. Ill never get rid of my oled even with the proprietary charging and data port
Recording Vita gameplay footage is such a pain! I typically like to use the PlayStation TV (which is really just a Vita with HDMI output), but so many popular games don't support it, which is incredibly annoying. It reminded me I really need to look into installing custom firmware on mine to get around that issue. Have you modded a PlayStation TV before?!
I’ve modded both my Vita and PlayStation tv. The Pstv solely to get round that problem. Once modded (I think it’s called the white list) is a must to play those games.
@@robertpatterson1037 Are there games playable on the PSTV after whitelisting that don't get stuck without the touch screen or back touch pad? What would good ones be?
Just for the people thinking of buying a PSVITA this year, it has a tremendous Modding Homebrew scene, they've ported several GTA games, bully, Cuphead, Mario kart, Mario 64, Zelda, Max Payne, Celeste and several other games... yes these are native ports not emulation, and there's more coming in the future such as Dead Cells, Hades ETC.
Wonderful collection! The Vita is my #1 portable console. Mine was given a new life when jailbroken. You can tap into more of the Vita's potential with mods. You can have improved frame rates, save battery life, emulate retro games (NES, MD, & TG-16 are pretty much perfect), access the PSP's XMB, connect a DualShock 4, store all your games on a sd card, and so much more.
Blame Sony for that. Tiny screen, tiny buttons, no SD Card support, inaccurate rear touch which 99.9% of devs ignored etc. To make it worse. Terrible support from Sony already after september 2013.
What a handheld. I absolutely adored Tearaway and in my book it was THE iconic PS Vita game as it used everything the console could do. It was like it was made to showcase the handheld
Just a QOL heads-up for visual novels: It is fairly common now to have an auto-progression feature - just set it to auto-proceed, and you only have to press that one button sequence and nothing more until you want to stop. This is at the very least true for Utawarerumono (and every other game from Aquaplus that I'm aware of), Doki Doki Literature Club and Root Letter.
Due to physical prices for this WONDERFUL handheld, I only go to pick up Vita games one or two at a time, play them and then eventually target something else. I love JRPGs and since many of those tend to be spendy, the prices usually hit me pretty hard pretty fast. Fantastic video highlighting the awesomeness of this handheld. I do hope that on your future trip to Japan you are able to pick up MANY more games for the Vita, especially since I know how passionate you are about it. Thanks MJ!
Bumped into your channel a few years ago and that happy accident launched my PS Vita collection habit. Being a little late to the party, I missed out on some of the limited editions, but I have built a physical collection of about 110 games plus a dozen or so digital (I know - SACRILEGE!!). Since I live in the Phoenix area, I used your 'road trip' video as my travel guide to visit the retro game stores in the area. Thanks for keeping retro gaming - and the PS Vita - alive!
Never got a Vita, but absolutely love the PSP. So I'm sure I would've loved the Vita as well. I never got one because I actually thought all the games were download only, which I was completely against. Which seems silly now seeing as that's pretty much how all games are. I would love for Playstation to come out with a new handheld.
I went all out on the psp because I didn't get one until like 2 years ago, and most of the games are cheap. I bought a vita around the same time, but most of the games are either also available on the PS4, or insanely overpriced.
Thanks for sharing! I recently sold my Vita collection (147 physical games) as well as my full Atari Jaguar/CD collection. Was able to pay off my brand new car with the $5,200 I received from selling both collections. I loved collecting but didn’t play the systems library that much, only around 10 games often played. I still have both my OLED and Slim vita’s, both modded now, and will definitely be keeping them! I think size wise that the Vita is the perfect size for a handheld system. There are definitely a few phenomenal games that you can’t play anywhere else. 👍🏻
Watching from the philippines, one of my favorite retro game reviews and videos to watch with my friends, metal jesus, always entertaining to watch! Keep it up sir ur the best! Happy new year!!
Love my vita, have about 120 games and counting, as well as both the OLED and slim models. It was so ahead of its time and it will always be my favorite handheld of all time.
Vita is hands down my favorite system. I bought mine when Tales of Hearts R was announced for localization back in 2014, since the Tales series has always been a system seller for me. I've managed to get over 120 games in my collection (therefore making it my single largest system library in my entire collection). I once even had a goal to get every NTSC physical game, but that was something I had to give up when the prices jumped back in 2020. Something I really love about the system now is the homebrew community surrounding it. There's plenty of games that didn't release in English that modders are translating into English. Several games that released in Japan on PS4 and Vita only got PS4 releases in English, but people are able to take the English script from PS4 and apply it to the Vita version, with games like Attack on Titan 2 and Catherine Full Body being perfect examples of this.
The Vita is my favorite handheld of all time. I love Persona4 Golden which is my favorite JRPG of all time. Just to be able to dable into a wide variety of unique rpg’s, anime style visual novels (which I love now). These are types of games in the past I wouldn’t have tried, but the vita introduced them, as well as whole new genres of gaming to me. I love the feel of the vita as a handheld as well. Just amazing. Just stinks now because everything is so expensive, if you want to collect physical for it.
I sold mine not that long after getting one after it came out. Once the releases started to dry up. Now I'm more into indie games and Japanese games, and I want portable gaming, so I bought a Vita again in 2020. Been loving it since
So conflicted about this console! I bought a huge amount of physical copies for the console when it was in its prime and left them sealed until I could play them…Which of course means many are still sealed. Now it makes little sense to open and play then with their values having gone WAY up. Thanks for the great video!
I own three Vita's (one of them is the OG OLED right before it got discontinued) and one PS TV...... having said that, whenever I look for a good game to buy for my Vita, I always look and see if the same game is available for the Switch. It's just so much easier to swap between handheld mode and TV. Plus the screen on the Switch is bigger.
Got me beat, i was collecting digital vita games during its run so i had only 12 physical releases, while having over 900 digital. I've since caught up a bit, having purchased my 50th physical Vita game. As a collector I'm not interested in the modding community, personally nothing beats having a physical copy in a case with artwork, to me it adds tremendous value to the game. I've since turned away from digital games entirely and am a advid PS3 collector. I am going for a full NTSC Set and currently have 908 cib PS3 Games. Getting close to my end goal of all 1171 of them. Happy Gaming, cheers!!
Back in the day I paid for three months of service and had it online, and I use to lay on the couch and play Call of Duty free for all, because that's my favorite thing to play...🤘🏼💯✔️
The Vita is an amazing Japanese language acquisition tool. SO many awesome Japanese games to play of all difficulty levels, easy to pick up and sharpen your listening/reading skills. And the games are very uh.. easy to obtain.
Red art games still had new Vita games for sell. Riddle corpses and bards tale. I ordered one copy each about three weeks ago and got them about a week ago. Both new and total cost was $70 shipped. Correction:. Riddle corpses is sold out now but Bards take and deer god are still available.
Your videos are the best mjr.. i feel so happy watching and rewatching them many times. Has been really enjoyable for many years. I still have my official MJR coin too! Please never stop!
I have 80 physical games myself and just over 1/3rd are still sealed. I remember getting many of them dirt cheap at GameStop and local video game stores for next to nothing along with the clearance section at Target. I was shocked at how the values jumped even on opened and CIB games. I also have the launch 3G OLED model, the blue 2000 and the PSTV. It's a great system.
I only have about 40 something games physically but I have all the major games and digitally I have a few major games(cause physical copies are too expensive on some of these) and some other digital games that are indie and some are platformers. I do have all the rare accessories including the two must have Grips..the Nyko Power Grip and Hori remote play assist grip with L1,R1,L2,R2,L3,R3. I love my camo PDP PS Vita Pull N Go Folio. I also recommend the Hori Elite Pack. I have that too. It's great if you aren't going on long trips or vacation...if just going out for the day it's perfect.
You should look into Rhythm games too...there's a bunch of great ones on Vita. Some of my favorites: DjMax Techinika Tune Superbeat Xonic Lumines: Electronic Symphony Persona 4: Dancing All Night Hatsune Miku f2nd Hatsune Miku Diva X Musynx Deemo Senran Kagura: Bon Apetite Sound Shapes
The Vita has been the console that keeps on giving for me, played it for a few days then shelved, few laters later it's got a new colour and a new life with modding
Very cool collection. To answer you question at 11:40, as a matter of fact yes, all games made with the most common engines (Game Maker, Unity etc.) could easily be exported towards Vita. It's for the same reason that we saw so many indie games appear on consoles since that era. ^_^
I have a much smaller Vita Collection with only 45 physical games all complete with 4 or 5 valued in the $50 range. I don't play my Vitas often but still love having them around and enjoy it when I do.
I love the rhythm games for the Vita. My top favorites are the Project Diva and Taiko series. I enjoy playing those games on console devices as well but I thoroughly enjoy playing rhythm games on handheld systems such as the Vita, 3DS, and Nintendo Switch. Plus the amount of jrpgs for the Vita is just fantastic. I think my hubby and I have a little over thirty games for the Vita. A good chunk we haven't even dipped into yet but hopefully we will be able to play more this year.
I bought a vita last year and I have enjoyed it, though the games just don't always grab me. As someone who grew up on handhelds, I'm happy to see how well the switch has done because it really feels like the spiritual successor to the vita.
Valkyrie Drive is mandatory. I would also try and find a copy of Soul Sacrifice Delta and Uppers. Blazblue Continuum Shift is a great fighting game and Dead or Alive 5+. The Odin Sphere remake is top notch Vanillaware. I didn't like visual novels either until I played Steins Gate and SG0 on the Vita. Give that a try. It's best in genre. The Hyperdimension brawlers are fun too. There's probably other stuff I'm forgetting. Long live the Vita.
A thing that I think people might be missing is that all the European games versions have English and will boot with that unless you have another system default and that is supported. So even if the cover is hungary, or whatever it'll boot english by default. I think the two best games for the Vita is Gravity rush and Uncharted Golden Abyss and they alone makes it worth owning.
One of my biggest regrets is to not have purchased Limited Run's Vita blindboxes the last time they did it. I should have bought as many as they had titles or something. Now finding them in the wild or on the internet is a real pain in the neck
MJ! Asphalt Injection is a solid racing title for the Vita. Thanks for all of the solid videos for game collecting and collectors over the last few years. I’m always looking forward to new content on your channel! -PronkDog13
All those people who supported the vita from day 1 knew what good was. Collecting for the vita now is hard. Only one gamestore in my area still carries vita games.
Many of the Seattle area retro game stores have Vita games, but typically it's only a handful and just the really common titles. Gaming Expos is the place to really find the gems these days.
I never had a vita i was/am a psp guy. But i played call of duty black ops and the ultimate marvel vs capcom and the street fighterxtekken games and they were a joy to play. Fun fact when they came out if you had the game on ps3 or ps4 there were some fun bonuses and uses that happened. For some games i recall the vita became a controller
I try to buy every month a Vita game for my collection. Here in the Netherlands there still some shops selling Vita games “brand new” as if they just came out. But they are sometimes pricey 😵💫
Utawarerumono Prelude to The Fallen is a digital only PS Vita game and the 3rd game in the series the first two were physical releases definitely worth getting Once the store does shut down the game will be lost forever also the Atelier games only two were physically released the other ones are digital only & check out Citizens of Earth, Chronus Arc, and Romancing Saga 2 & 3 all digital only RPGs
I have a few Vita games, sadly not a ton. I did get the collector's edition of the Yomawari/htoL#NiQ combo and the Yomawari Midnight Shadows one as well. Years ago I grabbed that special edition of Odin's Sphere, but for the PS4. I do have a Vita standalone game to do the cross play, but not the special edition of that one. I wish I could have grabbed that "A Rose in the Twilight" collector's edition too.
You sir, make enjoyable content and your enthusiasm for fun is palpable. I was looking to find a long box King's Field, and a black label Xenogears in very good condition. Any suggestions on where to look? Thanks!
Vita is my all time favorite hand held. I was thinking you were going to say that you were going to go for a complete collection. Still though nice stash, there are a lot more gems out there you didn’t mention!
beautiful collection, similar to my own. I need to get one of those Axiom Verge limited edition box set like you have. Nearly all of those games can get pretty expensive. Thank you for making a new video, best wishes, peace and love brother.
