I recently had my Porsche Boxster in for a major service and the courtesy car they gave me could prove very expensive !
I just had to do a quick review on the new Macan T and give you a look aroung the Porsche Centre Portsmouth show room.

Porsche the corporation like all the big manufacturers set the service intervals not the engineers. I like any engineer would recommend changing oil yearly or 5-10,000 miles. This will greatly extend the life of the engine, exactly what the manufacturer does’t want you to do, after all they want you to buy more cars. Also if you only keep cars for short periods without high miles you won’t care either. A perfect example of this is BMW M5 V10 rod bearings, prone to wear and expensive to repair. I know a BMW specialist who works on these regularly and he has told me that ones that had regular oil changes above recommended never have problems but the ones that don’t, you can set the date they will have to be done. I’m sure there are many other examples.
@neilturner6749
@neilturner6749 3 месяца назад
Ok some highly-strung engines just don’t cope well with mileage (AMG Mercs, BMW M as you described) but Porsche engines generally do way better. Your financial maths only work if you do the oil changes yourself (massively devaluing any prestige branded car) or have a cheap car like a Fabia where a basic service is still only £250. You could spend £6000 on non-scheduled Porsche servicing just to increase the typical rebuild mileage from 125,000 to 175,000. Why bother? Better to spend that money on other items that tire with age such as new shocks and springs at 75k miles instead of waiting for them to collapse.
@nigel.w
@nigel.w 3 месяца назад
10,000 miles is still far too many. I'd strongly suggest changing the oil and filter every 3-5,000 miles, or at least every year, whichever comes first. Moreover, what most people don't know and what Porsche dealers don't tell you is that most owners are driving their cars in conditions that Porsche says are extreme and require halving the service interval. Extreme conditions include having driven in stop-start traffic, which is all those who daily their cars, and having driven on track.
@nigel.w
@nigel.w 3 месяца назад
@@neilturner6749 Quite simply, you're wrong. Engine longevity requires changing the oil and filter every 3-5,000 miles. Modern engines are increasingly complex and increasingly include components of questionable quality. We are seeing great increases in the numbers of premature catastrophic engine failures as a direct result of long service intervals. Many failures can be attributed to oil dilution and oil starvation issues. Porsche engines appear to survive better than many other high performance engines simply because most Porsches are driven regularly. However, Porsche engines suffer from lots of oil leaks as a result of the long service intervals. And the bore scoring issues that many modern Porsche engines suffer from are a direct result of oil dilution, which is greatly exacerbated by the extended service intervals. Yes, the 9x6 and 9x7 engines had design flaws that greatly increased the likelihood of problems, and warming engines from cold by idling them exacerbates those problems, but regular oil changes would have prevented most of the extremely premature engine failures. Porsche knows this full well but has stuck with ridiculously long service intervals nonetheless. Fortunately, despite most owners sticking to Porsche's service schedule, many Porsches aren't doing anywhere near 10K miles a year. But some are doing more, and I see plenty of such cars where owners have further extended the service intervals. Some owners ignore Porsche's service schedule and change the oil more regularly, and those are the cars you want to buy. You certainly don't want to buy the cars that have done more than 10k miles between oil changes. And you also don't want the cars that had their first oil change after many thousands of miles. Of course, most first owners who don't plan to keep the car beyond the manufacturer's warranty period don't care. And Porsche only cares about the cars surviving the warranty period. However, it's also worth noting that even mass market manufacturers that offer much longer warranties on much more ordinary cars are falling foul of their extended service intervals. As a general rule, I'd recommend changing the oil every 3-5,000 miles, and otherwise adhering to the manufacturer's service schedule. For most Porsche owners, this would mean doing one additional oil and filter change every two years. And for owners of older cars it is very likely to pay dividends.
@BlahBloo-vd1hq
@BlahBloo-vd1hq 3 месяца назад
Honestly you must be mad not to change your oil at least every 200 miles or every time you stop for fuel, whichever comes first. I prefer to change mine every 100 miles to be certain and I've never had an engine failure in my 1.2l VW lupo. For extra protection I use vegetable oil or baby oil if I'm feeling flush. Remember, engines are expensive. Oil is slippery.

If you are a member of PCGB you use 98/99 Ron fuel you can buy Esso fuel to put in your mower. Other Esso fuels, I think the discount is less. I think you can join PCGB if you don’t have a Porsche. I’m sure there are T&C s on the website. Membership is circa £70/75, so you would need to use a lot of fuel to recoup this in a year. But there are many other benefits to being a member if you own a Porsche.

2 year service interval on a Porsche is insanity! Max 7500miles between oil services, especially if you have a turbocharged car. The oil needs to lubricate and cool the turbo and engine parts. I actually cannot believe Porsche themselves set this as the service interval

You are absolutely right, Porsche do know what they're doing. Like other manufacturers with ridiculous service intervals, they want your engine to wear out prematurely so they can charge you to fix it. Just ask any engine builder about the importance of regular oil changes. And as for letting them wash your car, rather you than me as they will install swirl marks for no extra cost. I knew a Porsche tech and he used to joke that they charged 3hrs labour for removing the oil drain plug and waiting 3hrs for it to drip out.... There is no way on earth you're getting anything special from Porsche for the crazy money they charge for servicing. Don't get me wrong, you are doing the right thing keeping the main dealer service up to date for resale purposes, but they are just ripping customers off (which isn't unique to Porsche)

PDK auto transmission is super-responsive too and manual operation is superb - just hit the "M" button on the steering wheel.

I do it every 5k miles since I think long intervals are BAD for things like bores, timing chains....etc. Takes 20 minutes to do it in my garage. I well remember the joy of living near Portsmouth decades ago when I had two V8 Aston Martins (but the weather hasnt improved). My take on the courtesy car is that I no longer want one after my recent experience having a Macan while my GT4RS was being serviced. I wasn't careful enough reversing out of a car space and put the tiniest of abrasions on the wheel arch - a one inch long bruise that didnt seem to break the paint. I told Porsche about it and they gave me a bill of over $1500 as they said they had to get it repaired at a Porsche approved paint shop and not choose a cheaper option so when they sold the car they didnt have to acknowledge the repair. My fault entirely but an Uber would have been less stressful.

The service schedule by Porsche and other manufacturers are set for the lease companies and to meet environmental policies not from an engineering point, manufacturers have made the calculations that the bulk of the cars will meet the lease period/miles and warranty period, after that they don’t care. Yes oils can make the schedule but the damage is calmative and means serious damage to chains, bores, bearings, cam’s and tappets. Also cleaning in winter is critical especially underneath as the road salts and mud/cow poop etc will cause a lot of corrosion.

I had the same service at Porsche South Lakes last year, no discount if a Porsche GB member but they did price match a quote from Porsche Preston. No Porsche curtesy car, I was given an Audi Q3? So no temptation for me. That 25% discount would cover a trip down south, maybe next time.

For every day usage and normal driving, I defo agree with the Audi being 90% of a Macan but for use as a driver’s car, the Audi barely hits 60%. In this guise, the Macan runs rings around the Audi all day long. Courses for horses, I guess.

Independant evidence and oil analysis shows that 2 year service intervals on any car, let alone a performance car is too long. Its primarily designed to be financially attractive to people using a short term lease or PCP deal. If I was keeping the car long term I would rather service the car twice as often at an independant specialist which would be about half that price per service. Independant specialists are also more likely to make you aware of common issues rather than have to tow the manufacturers party line on what to tell their customers. From my experience, my trust in franchise dealers is low. Local independants who rely on reviews and referrals are the way to go. Or do the servicing yourself on older cars.

Mad, mad, mad! Leaving your oil without changing for TWO YEARS and letting them wash your car but worried about putting miles on the car? 😮😮😮 Love the channel and have been following for years but this video shows how most people in this country don't really care as much about their cars as people in surrounding countries and further afield do. On the point about the oil, you should have sent it for testing to see if viscosity and contamination are still within tolerance. You'd be surprised. 😉

Our Jag is in the garage for a brake pressure module failure (under warranty) repair and we have a 73 plate Evoque D200 HSE which is very nice. My wife has always had a dislike for the Evoque but has requested to be put on the Insurance as we have the car for another 10 days so maybe this could be a contender for the replacement for the Jag in September. I was nearly on AutoTrader myself looking at Macan until you mentioned the prices. I guess I would be extremely upset if I got a Fiesta from a JLR dealer as a courtesy car. How does the Macan shape up against the Defender ?

Really didn’t get on with my Macan gts. Transfer box went in the first 10,000 miles, the pan roof leaks so badly the footwells filled up with water. Few rattles etc to me just didn’t feel that well put together. On a positive note dealing with Porsche was exceptional shout out Nottingham and Tewksbury center. Always looked after me with exceptional courtesy cars. Unfortunately Macan was such a disappointment.

Appreciate your advice.
