In which John Green discusses the outcome of the 2016 election, the prospect of a Donald Trump presidency, the astonishing and beautiful persistence of hope among humans, and offers somewhat lost thoughts on where to go now.
People quoted in this video include: Saladin Ahmed / saladinahmed
Kamala Harris: / kamalaharris
Lin-Manuel Miranda: / lin_manuel
Emily Dickinson: She doesn't have a social media account.
Thanks also to Rosianna Halse Rojas, Hank, Sarah Green, Ilene Cooper, and my old friend Marie for thoughts that went into this video. Any mistakes or errors in fact or judgment are mine alone.

Gentle reminder: Nerdfighteria, if you don't want the comment section to be full of poor-quality discourse, you have a magic weapon: THE +. (That said, I'm totally replying to baiting comments, so I'm a terrible example!) And please take care of yourself. I'm going to read an actual book this evening rather than trying to ride the wave of endless information online. -John

Here is the problem I see. What if you *do* reach out to other people and treat them as an equal but *they* are irrational? I know that stinks of bias but...what if you come out of your echo chamber but they wont leave theirs?
@KevinBurger

Well, that's still one more person outside of an echo chamber, and that's a good thing.
@sikamaru666
@sikamaru666 7 лет назад
Well if you believe that they are that irrational you can debate and try to change their views.The lack of understanding and the isolation between people of different ideologies is the result of why the US society is that divided.If you want an example of a community that does this semi successfully try rubin report.
@trevorsharp460
@trevorsharp460 7 лет назад
jim bob the answer isn't "stay in a community that you know is an echo chamber" though. and speaking from personal experience, different opinions SOUND unreasonable and irrational until you leave. Everyone thinks they're right; very few actually are. They never check. it's hard and it's scary, and you'll rub shoulders with terrible people. but that will happen no matter where you go. You should hold your ideas because they're defensible and worth having, not because they were never challenged. Tolerance and intellectual rigor are not born within the confines of a safe space. It takes courage to consider another person's opinion, even if you "know" it to be false. have a wonderful day

@@jchamp_7 I don't think that's something we should be excited for. Just like John said in this video, Trump attacked his opponent's identities; the opposite is true, we also like to praise people (e.g., Kamala) for their gender or race, and it sometimes overshadows the cracks in their true identity from many people's eyes. She is a power-hungry phony who says anything to move herself up on the political ladder. From her shaky views on various important topics to dismissing the fact that she called out her own running mate (Biden) as a racist and sexual offender, she is not someone we should trust at all.

@Gray963
@Gray963 7 лет назад
I think that's the best way of summing it up I've seen yet. Honestly that's simply empirically and objectively true to anyone who might disagree. The entire platform of Trump and the republican party is biased on negativity and negative responses and beliefs, that people are the problem and need to be forced to comply and respect one world view, that various foreign and abnormal people are wrong and must not do things at any cost. The democratic party and even Hilary despite her corruption and scandals want more openness and acceptance, more freedom "for more people", not just freedom for one type. The DMC and liberals want everyone to get along and do whatever they want with restricting or bothering as little people as possible, they only want more government in the sense of protecting peoples freedom and supporting them more. Republicans might say the same but their message is almost always one not of hope, unity, and charity but of monstrosities, mockery, hatred towards them or others, danger, impending chaos and a violation of their rights and prevention of others desires. The very fact that the GOP's prime goals and messages are that we cant let refugees, illegal immigrants, the non-Christians, and many charity's stand even while obsessing over war-like foreign economic interests- whether right or wrong clearly show who is the more tolerant and optimistic of the parties. Democrats usually focus on things like education and better healthcare, humanitarian needs and reaching out to the unheard voices, forgotten and poor. Whether you think any of this is right or wrong these are the openly claimed mission statements of the two groups, and even if democrats and liberals are wrong to think such things they are clearly the optimists who's goals are based on positivism instead of cynicism.

"We have to be better at listening to each other and challenging each other."-John. I agree 100% Even in nerdfightaria there are some definite subjects that are touchy. For example, Christianity is not welcomed. I think people will say that it is, but believe me as a Christian I find myself being judged often for it. As more of a libertarian/republican I can say that I feel very judged here for my beliefs. I know that the majority of nerdfighters try to be accepting, but there will always be some who aren't. I do believe that someday we will be better at listening and understanding each other.

However, I would not trade the 99% of the "These Are My People! I'm Home!" moments I enjoyed for anything. Totally worth the moment of pain.

I feel like there are a lot of Christian nerdfighters, including me. But there is a culture on the Internet of casually ridiculing religious faith that I find exhausting. Except that also has its own issues. In Venezuela, the people elect directly the president and the majority of people have been voting for the "revolution" despite being a highly dysfunctional government. government supporters could argue that the opposition haven't offered a better vision for the country, but whatever the case, direct democracy can be exploited by populists if a very large part of the population are wildly uninformed voters (which I think is one of the main issues here)

I realize that this is a huge setback for the liberal minded people of the US. But on the other hand it had the effect that politicians in my own country in Europe are saying: "Well now WE have to stand up for Democracy and human rights and being just to everybody even more. Let's make this a sign that we can do better." It gives me hope that my own government still holds on to its ideals, no matter how much it derailed in the last years. Stay strong, people of the USA, in the end it's the everyday acts of the common folk that make or break a country, not those voted into office.

I do think this has been an interesting trend world wide. The biggest showing of this push for protective nationalism until now was Brexit. And the global reaction to that was surprise that it passed. as history has repeated itself in a new place this time I wonder what the affects will be because unlike brexit this is binding. Trump will be president. This hasn't been a one off event there has been buildup and there will still be more actions that come. Getting an interested public will be essential to the state of the nation, and the state of governments around the world.

History shows that when we don't take a threat seriously, that is when it becomes more dangerous. Lets be honest here. The nerdfighter community and to a great extent the Green brothers reinforce the echo chamber of ideology. Differing points of view a largely ostracised and conforming opinions are drowned out of the discussion by the use of the "+" in comment threads. The nerfighter community doesn't know how because it doesn't try and that is largely due to it's thought leadership softly but firmly pushing away dissenting voices and conflicts of opinion. In sort, working as designed.

The whole + thing is basically a substitute for the thumbs down button (well, when it worked, at least). Any opinions that aren't more-or-less in line with what the Brothers Green espouse are ignored and put to the bottom of the list. It's not censorship per se, since people CAN still post whatever they like, but it definitely limits the amount of interaction people can have with opposing views here.

The + serves the same function as an upvote in reddit; it doesn't silence dissent but rather encourages thoughtful dissent. But yes, I agree with you that we have an echo chamber problem in nerdfighteria. We had it long before +s. It was actually probably worse in 2008 than it is now. I hope that was clearly acknowledged in the video. But I don't think it's fair to say that only comments that "agree with us" end up being a lively part of the discussion around these parts. If you look at the last fifty or so videos, I think you'll see a huge variety--and on many videos (like my Lord of the Flies crash course vid) almost all of the top 100 comments are vehemently disagreeing with my perspective, and they have plenty of +s. I still hate that book, though ;) -John

Donald Trump being elected has allowed us to dodge conflict with Russia. Hillary wanted a no-fly zone in Syria (Russia's ally and Aid to fighting ISIS) which would cause WW3. I am very pleased with Trump's Victory because he represents that corruption can be beaten and the rights of ALL Americans can be protected. Trump needs to be held accountable for things he does as well. He needs to be more presidential as we have seen since the election results. With our help and guidance he can be a good president. She is better because of her years of experience and first-hand knowledge of the job. She knows whats required of a person to do it effectively and though our political parties are divided, she would have been a strong bridge because, at heart, she is a conservative democrat. And she has been around so long that she knows the people on the other side. She has rapport with many republicans and knows how to work with them. She also never proposed actions that are highlighted as illegal in the constitution during her campaign.

well, its a great thing that the republicans also won the house and the senate and probably get to install a supreme court justice. for someone so effective in her role in our govt she sure did prove incompetent time and again with handling information, and even tried to subvert the democratic process on multiple occasions. nah, i dont buy it. i voted 3rd party, but its really not hard to understand why a lot of americans wouldnt want to vote for a corrupt person like her when her party constantly berates and belittles their opinions instead of trying to understand them. If only she wouldve thrown another lady gaga concert and maybe had lena dunham speak at the end maybe she couldve got a few more states to fall her way. thanks for the corruption, DNC, you really made this an easy choice for a lot of people.

Sammy Tyler that's a bit of a false dichotomy. You can totally be aware of the negative and see good in life at the same time. It's good to hope Trump won't be as awful of a president as Bush was, it's naïve to assume he will and it's crazy to think that if you just remain optimistic enough, nothing terrible could ever happen. John, I'm one of the 4% who took the census and said I would vote for Trump. I'm commenting not to attack others or even defend myself. I simply wanted to say thank you. For this video and everything else you've done in these months leading up to the election. And to say that I agree, we've all been living in echo chambers. But I've never felt that way about the vlogbrothers or Nerdfighteria. I disagree with some on politics, but I'm okay with that because I am never treated with hatred. Perhaps we don't understand one another like we should, but the least we can do is respond with respect and...well, understanding. Even where I disagree with you or others in the community, I've never felt insulted, mocked, or marginalized, which is more than I can say for other communities including my own. I can stand on my beliefs, but I also have never been more ashamed of and and angry at my own friends and family for how they've been treating other people who disagree with them, on both sides of the election. You've taught me to listen and to be kind, even to those you disagree with, even when they don't return the favor. Thank you.

Dissenting voices don't naturally imply cruelty and hatred. But the Trumpism spaces on the internet--the_donald subreddit, the alt-right comment sections, etc.--are full of cruelty and hatred. We have tons of dissent in nerdfighteria (look at the comments on the crash course lord of the flies video! Individual beliefs/policy positions vs affiliation or identity. There is an ocean of difference between being against a position or belief, even if religiously motivated (eg. banning abortion), and being against a group of people because of their religious affiliation (eg. banning Muslims). Your religion or worldview *is* part of who you are - a typically entrenched aspect of your acculturated self / identity, consisting of more than just a checklist constellation of beliefs (it includes community, experience, traditions, practices, perception, existential narrative, approaches to...everything, etc). There's a reason it's a protected class. When he says "what people believe" he's speaking within a political context, though it applies elsewhere. There are individual beliefs and then there are large, varied identity groups. I might disagree with a Republican on something, but I'm not about to dehumanize or call for a witch hunt against Republicans. Some of my state legislators might vehemently disagree with Richard Dawkins' views on religion and theism, but trying to bar him from entering the state 'because atheism' is exceedingly messed up (yes, they tried to do that). It tends to lead down a dark, dark road.

John, I've been listening to you and Hank for years now because you are very smart and have a great way of expressing yourself. As a conservative, I have been helped by you to understand my liberal loved ones better. Many times I disagree with things you say but still can't help appreciating you for your heart.That was the prelude for my response to something you said in this video (1:24) "But I don't know how to make our community more inclusive without opening it up to cruelty and hatred". It sounds as if you think that conservatives have the monopoly on cruelty and hatred. That has not been my experience. I did not vote for Trump but some of my friends did and they are worried that their liberal friends will find out. Why? Because they've already made cruel statements about what kind of person would vote for Trump. So here's what I'd like to see from you and I sincerely believe you just might be the man for the job. Open up as best you can to be inclusive and when you see the hatred come out (and it will - from both sides) school us on how to understand each other. My favorite video of all time that you made was "Pretty Bad Ways to Start a Conversation". I am a 22 year old college student, and I kept my support for trump to myself. Everyone online seemed to be voting for Hillary, and my perception was that if you were a Donald Trump supporter, you are bad. No discussion about the actual political issues, just straight to "how could you support a man who said all these hateful things?". The truth is, I value the actual policies and political beliefs rather than the distracting tabloid worthy headlines. The fact that you cannot even fathom or respect someone for voting for Donald Trump is the reason why your community is so one sided. I hope this helps you understand why you have a lack of diversity here when it comes to the full political spectrum.

To the party that won, congratulations. To the parties that lost, my condolences. To those who voted, thank you. To those who did not, I hope you will next time. To those who voted third party/independent specifically, I applaud you for standing for what you believe in no matter what others have said. I am a human being. I am an American. I will not be defined solely on who runs the country that I live in. I believe that people are defined by the actions that they create. I also believe that people are defined even more by how they face the consequences of their actions. The world is not fair, it is not perfect, and it is an extremely dark and terrible place. But, the world can be great, it can be amazing, and it can be better. I want to be better. I want to prove to the world, to god, to the universe, and to myself that I can be better. I want to do good in this world, and I hope that whoever reads this wants to do good as well. The future is not set in stone. I will patiently await to see what these four years have in store for our country and for our world. To those that this election effects the most, I will stand with you. To the people that voted independent or really anyone who made and educated decision I thank you so much. Our lives are always changing. I believe it was Confucius who said: "I learn one thing and I understand everything". To that I say, I learn one thing and yet I have everything to learn. To the ones that did not expect defeat I truly am sorry. But, look to this not just a defeat but as an opportunity. The bell for the match has rung. For now, rest up, heal, grow, and learn. So when that bell rings for the next round and you emerge from your corner of the ring, come back with a vengeance and come into it swinging. To those who voted third party/independent who may doubt their decisions, I want to tell you something. No matter what anyone says, no matter what you see on social media or on the news, your vote matters. It will always matter. Your voice, your opinion, your thoughts, they all matter. One of my biggest fears is that I have no mouth and I must scream. If you believe that you wasted your vote then you are correct. It is always difficult to stand for what you believe in but it is always harder when there is no one beside you. Stand strong, stand for what you believe in, fight for what you hold dear, and do not give up when hope seems gone. I am a human being. I am an American. I will not be defined solely by the person that runs the country I live in. I want to be better. I want to do good. I have a mouth and I will scream until I cannot.

We *do* have to get better at *"listening to each other and **_challenging_** each other."* I have always been liberal, but this safe space, trigger warning, micro-aggression "SJW" BS has made that (sometimes necessarily offensive and aggressive) dialogue almost impossible. And as a result, in the shadows, the alt-right has been left to fester and grow into a movement that shocked and blindsided us. We need to go back to having open debates and giving our opponents a chance to defend themselves, even if they are with the most deplorable of people with the most despicable ideologies. Without this, we cannot defeat them in open battle. Let your opponent run their mouth, then run roughshod over them and *showing* those reasonable agnostics who may be watching *why* their ideas are wrong. Without this, we are locked in our echo-chambers, where not a single mind will be changed.

John Green - "I want conservatives to feel included, but I don't want to open this up to cruelty and hatred". Way to make us feel included John. Pre-judging people much? He doesn't want people to think he agrees with hate groups that are rising up with the president as their suport and excuse for actions. Or that he doesnt knows how to make it inclusive without making it seem like hes contredicting himself. After all he did admit that he understands different people have different views and just like he cant see why people would vote Trump, he knows Trump suporters cant understand why people would vote Clinton.

I think there were several groups of Trump voters. Those that felt he gave voice to marginalized groups. Those that thought he would be far more likely to sign into law legislation that agrees with their views on government than would Clinton. And those that thought the elites needed to be brought down. Finally, I also think that they media, despite leaning far to the left, is thrilled to have Donald Trump as the next president. Now they will always have something juicy to drive their ratings up. This is (in my cynical view) why they gave him so much free airtime and publicity and drove his campaign. Can you imagine a Marco Rubio presidency? They might disagree with him on policy, but there would be very little drama to drive their ratings.

I've disagreed politically with John and Hank since I started watching vlogbrothers years ago. The reason I still watch them is because of this video. John is eloquent in his thoughts and represents his opinions well. He challenges me as a conservative with his views and facts, and that forces me to solidify my beliefs with facts. The country needs more of this. John and Hank never name call and "go low". They put out highly informational videos that challenge their audience. I appreciate that I'm not name called and talked down to. I show your videos to my students and they may not like what you say, but it challenges them. It's my job to be a better person than I was yesterday, a better leader, a better citizen, a better American. And I'm not going to do that if I encourage discourse in our country.

Did you mean 'discord', not 'discourse'? I think that is what you meant and it is a good comment. John, I think you're raising the right question: How do we start to understand each other better? Nerdfighteria has been, for me, a relatively safe place. But it certainly isn't that way for everyone, and I know you and Hank are aware of that. Unfortunately, I don't think it's possible to be inclusive without opening ourselves up to pain and hatred. I'm starting to think the internet is a great place to bring like-minded people together, but an inadequate forum for trying to resolve our differences. Maybe it is okay for Nerdfighteria to continue to be the haven it is, and we can encourage each other to broaden out, little by little. Start with someone you know. Someone you agree with on some things, not others. See if you can come to any common ground with that person. And maybe the wound can begin to heal, with millions of tiny stitches from all of us. Also, this is the first time I've actually interacted in the community, so I'll just say that I hope this comment made some sense and that I'm representing myself and the community well. I'm not even sure what I'm trying to articulate here. I just wish there was more I could do.

Listen, I and my wife (an Ecuadorian) voted for Trump. No, I don't support the negativity but I don't support what Clinton has been doing either. It really bothers me that people are labeling Trump supporters with such negative connotations, as if we are terrible people and support some sort of hate mongering. Look, you do not know my core values nor those of other Trump supporters. Stop with the labeling. My wife received a lot of backlash from her family and Hispanic friends because she voted for Trump. Many of them accused her of all sorts of things and the mentality was that Hispanics had to vote for Clinton. I mean, what gives guys? Are we not allowed to pick a candidate without being labeled or having people try to make us feel bad for who we supported? This is what disgusts me.
@rosianna
@rosianna 7 лет назад
I respect your right to vote for who you want and I'm sorry to hear you have received backlash but I just don't believe that there is any equivalence here. "I don't support the negativity but I don't support what Clinton has been doing either." This is where the problem lies. This man called my family rapists. He talked about grabbing women and has double-digit sexual assault charges against him and he's in the White House. This isn't equivalent to disagreeing with Clinton on policy, or emails. It is about public safety in a very real day to day environment and the permission granted to acts of hatred. I feel less safe because of this vote. Hate crimes escalated after Brexit. I think we will see that here. Many are already seeing that. So yes, I will have a strong response to this.

A lot of the Republicans that denounced Trump lost to a Democrat, but I'm still holding fast to my statement about the wall and Muslims.

I think the country needs to get better at communication and make physical efforts to integrate and understand each other. Not everyone is a scholar. Not everyone works with their hands. We are different, but if we stop looking at each other as cartoonishly wrong, I think we can make decisions with each other in mind. Trump became president for a reason. Racism, sexism... bigotry are blanket words we use to turn people into simple figures we can then discount. Why are they so afraid? If we are in it with them, how can we convince them of our perspective? My answer is not words, but experience. We are such a big country, if it were much easier to acclimate. Through education and travel. I think we'd see a less divided America.

John Murray I'm all for idealism, but you do realize that idealism just got kicked between the legs and slapped in the face. While you're trying to build a bridge, someone else just built a barbed wire wall mounted with machine guns all around you. (I agree with what you're saying, but the lesson I've just learned from the president elect is to not be politically correct, but to instead be cruel and insulting. This type of behavior can pay off big time and even take you as high as the presidency of the United States of America. The lessons he's taught us will now be part of the history books of the future. This disheartens me, but half of the voting population of my country has stood up and cheered and applauded this behavior and bestowed the title of leader upon him.)

I once had a friend that said this about the candidates. Trump - Embodies what's wrong with the corporate and media worlds. Clinton - Represents what's wrong with the politicians. Stein - Shows what's wrong with environmentalists. Johnson - Shows what's wrong with the U.S. and its view of the world. Make of this what you will.

Thank you. I think you have finally said what I needed to hear after all that has happened. It has been a month, and we are still reeling from the shock. We see so much wrong still happening, but, even though you said this only one day after the election, it is still so relevant because we must remind each other why we continue to live lives of advancement, hope and help for our fellow citizens. We must continue to care, and to offer a helping hand whenever and where ever we see a need. Thank you!

@@Wessquick hello, it’s 2020 now. this is it, this is the shock. Trump has put the country through hell for the past four years, especially during the pandemic. He didn’t support climate change policies, he enforced horrible immigration policies, and he brainwashed millions of people through indoctrination. He encouraged his supporters to protest the results of a fair and free election through baseless claims of voter fraud. I might have said “no, no, he might have a point” IF he had any substantial evidence to put forth. there was no evidence. The Capitol was stormed and people were killed. This was the result of his ignorance and blatant lies.

There's a lot of discussion going on now about how this is "just the beginning", and that democracy still goes on between elections, and we have a responsibility to actively take part and work towards a better, more equitable, more inclusive country, despite the outcome of the election. My question is, what is the most effective means of doing so? Rallies? Writing your state representatives and senators? In a country so divided and in a clamor of political discourse so deafening in its divisiveness, how do we effectively go about ensuring our voices are heard? I'm deeply concerned where our country is headed in respect to environmentalism and climate change. But even more so, deeply afraid of where our country is headed with respect to human rights and treatment of minorities. What do we do about it now?

I have been hoping for hope. And hoping that I was not going to be wrong again. But, even if I am wrong, what is life without hope? I have read that poem dozens of times, but I never really understood that one part. Hope is indeed that thing that never stops - at all. Thanks, Emily (for writing that). And thanks, John (for reminding me).

You say that you think it's going to be a tough time in U.S. history. Part of the problem with the echo-chambers is that you obviously don't realize that from the perspective of the people who voted for Trump, the last eight years has been a tough time in U.S. history. Why do you think they wanted to change things? So yeah, the next four or eight years might be a tough time for you. And so long as we we continue to play the game as Us vs. Them, there's never going to be a time when half the people in the country aren't seriously discontent with their own leadership.

This is true. We are in the largest debt ever and it seems people are ignoring that.. Despite how you feel for "Progress" John, economically this has been a crippling time for business owners and if you disagree take a look at the House or Representatives Election and notice only 10-20% of elected were democrats and most censuses show 70% of the population fed up with the current administration. Try and look at things as objectively as possible. You will be much better for the experience.

Many people want to do just that, but with the way America's voting system and debates/media and general political system works, its just not really possible for us right now. The majority of America has shown to be moderate. We don't have a system that works for us right now, and there's no good way to change it. For comparison, many, many people on both sides disagree with the electoral college, but there is no good way to change that right now. Change is gradual, and it's a steep mountain for the US to change anything. I don't have a good answer as to how to change it - wish I did.

Ashes H - First step, protest it. Every step of the way. Don't just complain about it after every election and then sit on your arses the other 4 years. Don't let the media turn you against each other as Red and Blue. Especially since, as you said, most people are moderate, and most people care about largely the same issues. Don't accept the insane 2 year campaigning. Protest it. Be heard.

TheMrVengeance I am afraid that you slightly misunderstand the climate in America, there is no legal recourse for people who do not like the system, and the government currently has the authority to capture or kill anyone who speaks out against the system without a trial. The government has military technology so much more advanced than its citizenry that to fight it would be like trying to arm 2 year old with foam bats against orbital nuclear strikes. We can nag, but the only people who can change it is a huge room of people who all need to agree to change anything, and they are ALL paid handsomely to make sure they do not change the system. 548 people need to agree to abolish everything they swore by oath to uphold, forfeit their ample paychecks and pensions, and vote to sacrifice the livelihood of themselves and their families before the system can change for the better. Also note that they only got into the position where their vote matters by ardently supporting and exploiting this system. The United States is stuck, and unless another state of similar power risks the lives of its own citizens in an automated atomic war to destroy its systems, its citizens will never be free.

The problem with opening our views up and being inclusive to our echo chambers is that there'll be people that will dismiss anything that disagrees with their point of view,evidence be damned (and we could be guilty of that as well). There's also the problem of people being vile and hateful purely due to disagreeing with someone that shares different values and views. Both of these things could poison people's outlook on trying to be inclusive to different mindsets and it'd just strengthen the echo chambers already established. Until we as a people can have a civil conversation about our ideas and beliefs without resorting to insults or dismissing facts,we'll just be stuck in a cycle. We need to stop the insults,separate the trolls from those who have legitimate views and listen to them no matter what they think. Because these are the first few steps to changing the grim environment we've created. Listening to each other and treating each other's views with respect

When John says "But I don't know how to make our community more inclusive without opening it up to cruelty and hatred" how do you know the cruelty and hatred he's talking about isnt coming from the 96% of people who dont support Trump? I mean, wouldnt it make sense that the majority of the community would target that small 4% who do support Trump? I dont think the hate John's describing is one-sided.

There's a difference between saying, "I find your political beliefs deplorable," and "I find YOU deplorable because of WHO YOU ARE--LGBT or Mexican or Muslim or whatever. That kind of identity-based hatred is extremely destructive to social spaces, because if there are people in comments making broad and hateful generalizations about Muslims or LGBT people or ANYONE, the conversation cannot go on in a productive or thoughtful way. And every time in the past we've tried to broaden the tent (and even now in comments with this video trending), that's what happens--and nerdfighteria becomes just another toxic internet community. I don't think we're short of toxic internet communities at the moment. -John

Don't start discussions on some internet forum. That's useless. Instead, organize public debates with figures from both political spectrums. Like the New Atheists did with the Christian and Islamic apologists. Let people watch the debate on RU-vid and draw their own conclusions. That's how democracy is meant to work.

a lot of center-left liberals are starting to understand that quickly dismissing somebody without first listening to them is probably not a great idea. Trump's election is a wake-up call. I hope a lot of the non-Republicans with legitimate grievances who voted for Trump also come to understand that he isn't going to help them. You may have been right to vote for him, his election has made people listen to you, people who should have been listening years ago, but Trump himself will just be more of the same & probably worse.

Nerdfighteria has not and will not become a toxic community. Though I am not a part of it, the community which has gathered around you is a positive one. However, in a video like this which is both trending and politically charged many of the comments are likely coming from outside your subscriber base and cannot represent Nerdfighteria. The question is whether this video encourages people who are coming from outside your community, namely of the faction which is currently lacking - political conservatives, to consider becoming a part of Nerdfighteria. If it does, those who join will likely be as thoughtful and caring as your current subscriber base is.
