On 5-20-24 I harvested the dying potato plants in my raised bed. They never flowered so I don't think the plants were fully mature, but they gave a good harvest either way.
I was surprised by the haul two small beds gave, only about 40 sqft I think? Sweet potato slips went in soon after and seem like they might yield better though!
Thank you! I was really surprised, I think all the compost I added when I prepared the bed made a huge difference! The rest of my potatoes did alright but not near as well as these.
@@Lone_Star_Outdoors It is a funny business growing potatoes isn't it?? One year they do well...the next they don't!! But you have done well!! I have some here growing where I am in Australia!! Hoping for a good harvest in the next couple of months!! Cheers!!
You're spot on- it's hard to decide what you should do each year since the results can be so different each time. Seems like mine liked full sun and some compost best this year but the grasshoppers like the full sun too! Not knowing what you'll get is part of the fun, but it'd be nice to grow a good haul of baking potatoes some day! I hope you get a nice harvest when you pull this years potatoes! 👍
Thank you! I bet you'll pull some nice potatoes as long as they're in the ground long enough- I shoot for 60 to 90 days, but if they're dying back mine get pulled no matter how long it's been. If you're careful you can pull back some soil and check on their progress 👍
Living in Texas in the US is almost the polar opposite, we get so little rain that I have to mulch everything I plant and water often. It gets so hot by late may/early June that all of my potatoes start dying. It's really interesting seeing all of the different struggles gardeners go through around the world!
These grew for just over 60 days, but if they hadn't been damaged/dying I would have left them longer. The longer they get to grow the more potatoes you'll get!
I'm waiting on my first sweet potato harvest right now, hopefully they grow as well as the potatoes in this vid 🤞 do you have any tips for me on when to start pulling sweet potatoes?
