My mom is so scared of mice that she would faint if she sees it. When she was younger, she said she was asked to go to the outdoor wet market (in Asia). She has a basket with her. When she got home, she was pulling out the veggies from the basket she ended up grabbing new born mice. She thought a mouse went and had babies when she set down the basket. She was so shocked and that her hair was falling off in patches for a long time. She was around 14. I think these are super cute though. 😊

Is it better for the mom and the babies to be separated from the group? (I haven’t watched the last video so sorry if you already said this) Because I remember reading somewhere that it’s better for the mom to not be alone with the babies as other mice can help her and also be kind of „role models“ for the babies regarding living in a group. I was just wondering what your thoughts are :) Glad the mom was able to give birth at your home where everyone gets taken care of with lots of love
@Emiology
@Emiology Год назад
It can be useful, I would’ve done that with another older mouse (the other mum) under normal circumstances but she got reserved with some of the older female babies and was ready to go to a new home. But the bin cages just aren’t big enough for 18 female mice to all be in together, the younger 5 week old girls at the time the other litter were born needed more enrichment, climbing toys etc which you can’t have with a newborn litter. The other mum and the female babies have also now all gone off to their new homes too ☺️

another question: do female mice still look fat like they swallowed a ping pong ball after they gave birth, like a couple of days after? i don't know wich one of my girls gave birth because one looks like she's clearly pregnant (the ping pong one) and the other one looks simply fat as when i adopted her. But both of them take care of the babies equally, thankssss
@Emiology
@Emiology 6 месяцев назад
It's not recommended no, it can make them more likely to get along without fighting but its always a risk and more often than not once matured males will fight each other and even kill if not neutered. These babies once the males were separated from the mum and female litter mates started having arguments that progressed to fights as early as 4 weeks old.

Can any rodent experts help me out? Is it safe to have a little guy with a VERY high prey drive dog, I truly wouldn’t want to endanger a animal thanks to the dog
@erininwood8131
@erininwood8131 Год назад
Apologies this is coming late. If you were sure to keep the dog locked out of the room while the rats/mice were out of the cage you might be OK. I'd suggest visiting someone who has the pet type you want and see the dogs reaction, he might go nuts at the cage, or not be trustworthy to leave it alone when you're not in the room. Also please if you do decide to go ahead, get more than one rat/mouse, they are social animals, they need their own kind to bond with. Also, have a back up plan if you need to separate the dog and rodents if his prey drive is too substantial. Best of luck, from New Zealand.
@SomeoneBeginingWithI
@SomeoneBeginingWithI 7 месяцев назад
It's risky. You would have to keep them separate, but even if you do your absolute best to keep them separate, the dog may still find a way to get to the rodents. High prey-drive dogs can find ways to open cages and get into rooms you didn't think they would be able to get into. It's probably also stressful for both animals to be able to smell each other. Especially if you have a dog from a breed that was selectively bred specifically to hunt rodents, it would be very frustrating for the dog to be able to smell and hear a rodent and not be able to kill it.

@blobbertmcblob4888
@blobbertmcblob4888 Год назад
So, I'm assuming that she made a VERY preventable mistake and left the males together with the females too long. 4 weeks, is when the males should be separated. They can start mating as early as 5, by 6 mice are considered fully mature. Also...why are you NUETERING mice, which live on average 2 years? That seems completely pointless.
@Emiology
@Emiology Год назад
You didn’t listen to the video did you? 😂 Can assure you 1 week old males didn’t impregnate the female that was already pregnant again when I got her I’m neutering* the males so they can live socially as they’re meant to, it’s a shame you think quality of life for a small animal is pointless.
@blobbertmcblob4888
@blobbertmcblob4888 Год назад
@@Emiology male mice don't NEED to live socially is the thing. Intact male mice can and do live just fine on their own. They aren't like rats and don't really benefit one way or another.
@Emiology
@Emiology Год назад
Skipping over the fact you’ve made a very wrong assumption aside… Look at the social structure of mice in the wild. They are social animals, just because some male mice have to be kept alone doesn’t been they don’t benefit from living in groups. Tell that to my male who LOVES his female friends and is constantly grooming and cuddling them
@blobbertmcblob4888
@blobbertmcblob4888 Год назад
@Emiology of course your MALE mouse likes female company. Intact males can live with females just fine and do in the wild, the side effect to that is lots of babies. So yes, neutering male mice means they can live with females baby free. But the fact still remains that so long as the buck has a big enough enclosure and plenty of enrichment and out time if he's friendly, he doesn't NEED female company. For the love of God, you are a rescuer, please do not try to argue mice with me. I bred and kept them for over 20 years
@Emiology
@Emiology Год назад
@@blobbertmcblob4888 Just because you cannot personally afford or do not want to provide every male mouse you bring into this world with the option of company, does not make it 'pointless'. I go above and beyond for my animals and that extends to any I rescue, I understand not everyone can provide that and in some countries neutering is not even an option, obviously breeders aren't going to neuter mice because it does not benefit them, but don't take offence to someone else doing the most they can. I'm not sure about your choice of language of the word 'rescuer' as if being a breeder holds any higher standard of being. I'm sorry I'm struggling to take you seriously when I'm still awaiting an apology for your false assumption lol, as a breeder of 20 years you should know about Embryonic diapause, no?

I found a tiny little thing which I thought was a mouse but it's eyes are super tiny! Other mouse pictures even of babies, their eyes are much bigger. His are super cute n tiny. So maybe it's something else... I believe it's about 4 weeks old. 2 inches long from head to rear. Long skinny tail. Skinnier tail than your mice at 2:00 Full Fur and eyes fully opened. But I believe it was exhausted and dehydrated cuz it wouldnt' move even when I touched it. It was cold and windy and slightly raining. It was on the cement tilted over. It crawled into my hand, I believe for warmth. After 10 minutes I set it down in some thick shrubs for protection from wind. It struggled to crawl to me and it was shaky like it had no coordination to which I thought it probably needed water with sugar and some electrolytes. It crawled back into my hand so I took it home and got some mouse food, blocks from the pet store and gave it a small tiny piece of apple to which it immediately ate from. Then drank some water with a tiny bit of sugar in it..... Also added pink salt to another cap with water in it, It rested then then ate from block of mouse food. It began to walk with more energy and a steadier walk not as wobbly... so I figured it was on its way to health. That was about 12 hours ago. Now it's sleeping... I'm going to get some goats milk, maybe it still needs milk. It crawled back into my hand and fell asleep. It clings to me and wont' run away...
