I've watched now a lot of your videos. Thank you again for the effort and time to provide all the information. I really do like your way of approaching things. Subtle but still makes a significant difference that sounds good.

yoo thank you for your video! 🙏 I faced the following problem when doing corrective EQ: It's about EQing low end with a highpassfilter. I usually use ProQ3 for this. So everybody says it is good to cut a bit of the sub freqeuncies on the 808 or Kick for example to get some headroom or space for other instruments or just to control the sub freqeuncies and make them tight. But when you cut e.g. at 30 hz with a 24/db the signal is like 1 or 2 db louder then before. So I lose headroom in the end. I know that one can also do it in linear phase mode but this will cause other problems. Why are all pro mixing engineers still doing this? Could you explain what the benefits of cutting sub frequencies is?
@5piece
@5piece Месяц назад
For sure, here and now in 2024, I'm also more mindful of this and am not always filtering low end (on a master) anymore like I once was. I still think it can be a valid move depending, and on this song in particular, the cut created a certain effect (the 808 in particular rattles a certain way with the filter that it doesn't without). The general logic is, you apply the filter to remove unnecessary low-end frequencies, and as a bonus, you can potentially create more headroom. Now, sometimes, headroom is not created and instead your EQ will clip/overload. This is because that cut shifts the phase resulting in different frequencies within the signal being delayed by different amounts. When a filter is applied, the phase relationship between different frequency components of the signal can change, leading to clipping. Obviously, this is NOT good and something we want to avoid - which is why I no longer do this type of move without being very careful and calculated. As a tip, if you are clipping after applying a filter, you can simply reduce the gain or volume of the plugin you are using to execute the move. So for example with the FabFilter ProQ3, you can go into the output and reduce it by whatever amount you are now clipping by, and it should technically mitigate the clipping problem. The phase shift problem is another conversation. Hope this helps!

@@5piece thanks for your answer man. I think you are right that it can be a valid move to shape the sound. But i noticed when using highpass filtering on individual bassheavy elements (in the sub region) in the mix, you always lose headroom and do not gain headroom (in the sense of dB). If someone can proove me wrong i would be grateful :D

would you suggest not mastering a song in the same session as the mix? what if you just made a new aux track in the mix session and put that chain feeding into the master fader?
@5piece
@5piece 2 года назад
That second option you said is what I GENERALLY do, especially if I'm mixing a single. However, if I'm doing an album, then I may do my mastering within the single song session, but render out a mixed not mastered version, then re-master it all separately in a fresh, mastering only session. That way I have all of the other songs and mastering chains there, in context, and can make more calculated and educated choices with processing. It may also be better to do it separately for processing since a mix session can have tons of plugins, while a mastering session likely won't in comparison. Both are viable for sure, just will depend on if you need context or not. Hope this makes sense, and helps!

Thanks for this and noted for future videos. I’d rather be too loud than too quiet but totally understand your sentiment here. You should notice my more recent videos are balanced better between the voice over and the music 🤙🏼

Can the same mastering chain be used in the box and when we export a wav song without any mastering plugins on the output channel, so we re-import it into Daw and do the mastering?
@5piece
@5piece 2 года назад
Yup! Absolutely. For a single I tend to master in the session if I can for efficiency but with an album I’ll create a separate session of all the final mixes where I apply mastering only to each one. Hope this helps!

@@5piece yes tnx! I like to do mastering right away in the mix box but I have a weak processor so when I put all the plugins in the processor goes to 100% so I am forced to do the mastering separately

Question. I'm using Studio One to do all of my production. The problem that I'm running into is that no matter what I do, it seems that all of my mixes come out sounding super harsh on the top end. And I have no clue why that's happening
@5piece
@5piece 5 месяцев назад
Do they sound harsh even while working on them in the DAW? Or is this only happening on your bounced files? In other words, is there a disconnect from how it sounds in DAW vs. The final bounce down?
@jthelovecoach1
@jthelovecoach1 5 месяцев назад
@@5piece The final bounce... Everything is super sibilant. It's to the point where I have to put a low pass filter on everything just to make it halfway manageable. And I have to do the same low pass on the Master
