My Reaction to John Oliver's Israeli-Palestinian Monologue

I think you watch too much Ben Shapiro

First, Oliver is well meaning with his opinions, but on this subject he is simplistic. The Palestinian Authority which was willing to work with Israel on the settlement question has appeared to have lost its influence to Hamas. Not all Palestinians are pro Hamas, but if you know the history of Palestine, you know the British occupation, Balfour declaration and are also aware that Israel was founded in a land of hostile fundamentalists. The simplicity of Oliver's observations is that he feels it is easy to negotiate with a pro- terrorist organization with a manifesto of world destruction. Netanyahu may very well be a right- wing demogoge, but negotiation with fundamentalists it's a frightening conundrum.

Don't give yourself too much credit.

Can you explain the issue? If you a western you should think that both sides has an equal responsibilty for preserving human values, as much as possible, at a time of war. regardless of power. I'm not sure Hamas, which kinda against western values, see this as a sublime value. sure, it recognize it, but i think, and they said it repeateadly, that god (specially "their god: of course) as above all human values. Although the media suggests that the civilians who were killed in Gaza were killed with bad intentions. I can assure you this is not the case. I can count so many times of opportunities to Israel to target top hamas highly wanted men. which was aborted because of potential collateral damage. I'm not sure that Hamas would stop the attack if it takes place other way around. Granted- Israel can anticipate future better opprutunites to abort the mission while Hamas probobly could not have that luxary, But i think even if the power imballanced was reversed. Hamas will put collateral damage in lower priorty of considiration.

I think the biggest issue with defenders of Israel's actions is to say "Hamas is bad", when nobody is suggesting the actions of Hamas in bombing Israel is ok, but its pretty basic stuff to say that it isn't a defence of Israel's actions in killing innocent people to say someone else also kills innocent people.

According to John Oliver, if the NYPD uses their fully armed squad team to shoot down a man with a gun who started shooting people in a public school, they act immorally. It is clearly an unfair fight against a poor guy who only felt that he has been deprived by society.

Gaza was a territory controlled by Egypt actually until 1967. I think the intend of the sentence was to respond to the occupation claim. Hamas is controlling Gaza and it has borders with Israel (not a friendly one, I'll give you that) but also a border with Egypt. Look at the map.

I admit that this is the only point of his that I don't agree with him on. As an Israeli, I think Israel DOES indeed need to take more responsibility over the situation because it is more powerful, and indeed, Israel DOES take responsibility over civilian lives in Gaza, as seen both on Oliver's video and this one. Israel does its' best to preserve civilian lives. Does it work 100%? Of course not, but if you compare the percentage of civilian losses on the Palestinian side in previous confrontations with other conflicts around the world - past and present, you'll find that Israel has the best track record in that respect - even compared to other Western countries. That's exactly what it means to take responsibility. If Israel wanted, it could wipe Gaza out in one day. It has that kind of firepower at its' disposal.

According to John Oliver, if the NYPD uses their fully armed squad team to shoot down a man with a gun who started shooting people in a public school, they act immorally. It is clearly an unfair fight against a poor guy who only felt that he has been deprived by society.

I also thought some compassion was missing from this video. It focused on the rational arguments and solely on them. I also agree that with power comes responsibility but here is where I don't fully agree with you. What does being more responsible mean in this context? How many missiles and killed civilians on the Israeli sides should Israel tolerate before responding? Would its response be considered legit then? Can you imagine running to the shelter every couple of weeks for several years? Having to arrange birthday parties and field trips to your son between bomb shelters? How does this seem okay? The Palestinians are miserable and the IDF should definitely do more to not harm civilians but they are never the first to attack. Never. The violence would stop once Hamas stops launching missiles at Israel.

What I was trying to say is this: I 100% believe that every country in the world has the right to retaliate, I have no problem in there, furthermore hamas also was aware that IDF would retaliate, What I was trying to say is that people, even if support the acts of IDF, should not pronounce it with pride, like they are doing a good job because it is not. When I say with great power comes great responsibility I wasnt talking about IDF, I was talking about the people (Jewish People), meaning that since they are in a more powerful position they have a greater responsibility morally. Think about it like this: Palestinians have been bombed, many people have died and this causes great psychological issues even if they are not affected by the bombing. After all this, when they go online or on the media they see something like "Palestinians deserve it, because they stroke first." Many people (unrelated to hamas or any other thing) would think "what did I do". And as a conclusion this may ignite a new wave of hamas supporters only because they find themselves guilty of something they didnt do. As for your questions, I agree with the part that striking back is necessary, no arguments there. I hope I answered your questions.

Israel has self sustaining economy. We do quite well without US money , that must be used by Israel to buy US made gear. The US spends much more money supporting the Egyptian or Iraqi military. Besides , if Israel didn’t existed, US troops would have had to pay with their lives to keep stability in this part of the Middle East.

I was thinking the exact same thing. I still found it interesting to see what he had to say tho.. it’s in a way fascinating to see how one can be so convinced of his view of the situation.
