I'm the filmmaker, and I absolutely LOVE the book, so don't worry...even though there are some expanded scenes because it's a movie, it'll capture the spirit of the book.
I remember reading 'The Best School Year Ever' and man those Herdman kids got up to some crazy antics. Poor Beth had to write compliments for Imogene Herdman. She ended up using a Thesaurus. The personal highlight was whenever the kids were out for their one day of school absent. The whole school got a holiday.
"We even had easy lessons when they were absent. Boomer Malone said the teachers did that on purpose to give us all time to heal and get our strength back, but my mother said it was probably the teachers who had to get their strength back." LOL. You should check out My Brother Louis Measures Worms and Other Louis Stories by the same author. I think it's her funniest.
I love your guts to get onand speak your truth abouthow you hae discened differences between the book and movie, howeer Dalas Jenkins the movie maker and director has a good point in hi scomment below. A book is a totllly different format than a move ie is... and the book is easier to see in print and exand what the author is saying easiy and the reader makes his own movie in his head one scene at a time.... . Dallas , on the other had has to create the scene from his perspective and that is the joy of being a film director.. the ufn of it as he sees each character and scene is his delight.... and as you point out too. both sides are ineteresing.. and though different bring accorss an overall funny story with the spiritual point,which Dalls loves I believe is that a pagenat like this IS for kids like the Hermans ... Jesus would want it that way too. . As a school teacher kids love reading the story and howl at the scene that are writtgn. I know we , when we see it , will feel the compelling humorin it . but as compassionate as Dallas isabout this.... and I had the same reaaction he did when I read it.. well he surely will capture both sides of this .. ashe is an amazing director .... he will show the family in the situation it is in with poverty at its core, yet the kids are tough and reslient. and when the mother of the family is asked to direcet the pageant this year.. she sees the total need of these neglected children to be allowed to do something speical. and find some worth and respect in their lives... totally nice review.. and you do .. show both sides of your thoughs on this.. I feel also the music in it is perfect.... as it sets the spirit of the whole movie.... as the words in the song are what the movie is about.. Both amazing book and moive we are blessed that Dallas got the rights to do it. .. as he can do it like no other.. Keep comminting though it isnice of you to do this.. it bringsthe movie out to people who otherwise might not know abou tit. Blessings to you. and keep shining x Merri
That's the thing. I dislike the idea of the mother "seeing the total need of these neglected children to be allowed to do something special." I definitely consider the mom a hero but a flawed one. That's part of what makes her endearing in the book. I definitely see the book conveying the message you're talking about. I just think it's more interesting in that the reader has to ferret that message out for themselves instead of having it explained to them halfway through. (To be fair though, I don't know when exactly the scene in the movie with the mom explaining the message to her daughter takes place. Maybe it's right before the end which I'd prefer.) Of course, other viewers may disagree and I'm expecting to enjoy the movie myself just not as much as them. Hope that makes sense and thanks for expressing interest in my channel.
