In a world full of hardships, we all have our stories to tell.
For me that story and that journey is my life during my PhD.
In 2019, I was grateful enough to graduate and achieve my goal of obtaining a doctorate.
But what I feel was even more incredible was the story I was able to share in this talk I gave on the day. It not only motivates me but I hope it helps others too.
Believe me, as much as it sounds cool being called Dr Aamir Hussain. Sharing this story to help inspire others is even better for me.
So while you all are waiting for season 2 of the what comes to mind series! I hope you enjoy watching a summary of my PhD journey and the side you don’t see!
Remember this ultimately led to form the building blocks of this FPMA foundation!
It changed my life, I hope listening helps change yours.
Thank you for watching! I really appreciate your support!

your experience is very similar to mine, I was isolated in a lab 7 miles away from campus in a complex with no other PhD students but a few foriegn postdocs intent on thier work. I was told not to talk to people outside my lab and there was no one in my lab but a series of non english speaking foriegn postdocs some of whom cried everyday. Shortly after I arrived the college cut all student stipends. Some advisors chose to fund their PhD student from their grant money and get them tuition waivers but mine did not. I worked as a field hand in the agricultural college farm next my lab or sometimes as a janitor at other colleges to fund my PhD. My advisor would not buy supplies for my experiments so I could only use what supplies and instruments were there that the postdoc didnt need or what I bought myself. My dad died of cancer in the second year of my studies. Did it make me stronger and a better problem solver having to do it all myself and teach myself in isolation? yes Would I do it again? no, there are better ways to acompilish this and work in the subject I am passionate about.

My tip on doing a PhD. Do it on Hegelian philosophy applied in an analysis of James Joyce's 'Finnegans Wake'. That's what I'm doing. No one knows what you are on about. Even your supervisors
