Asmongold explained a condensed and improvised version of the lore, with some inaccuracies, but it was good for those who have no idea of Tolkien's world of Arda. I was quite impressed, tbh. Thank you for offering the correct clarification, it was a very enjoyable video :)

I'd agree he is obviously a big fan, is impressive, and has delved deeply into the lore. Pronunciation, I agree with the video, is not critical (some seem to adore the linguistics so much they master Elvish, or "The Black Speech", an amazing thing, but not my way), nor is using the exact wording of author Tolkien, as long as the full support essence is captured, and any minor inaccuracy is not critical (who made rings, Elves, or others? Likely not critical). I also agree that this new series is atrocious to an amazing extent and the Hobbit series extremely weak, really obnoxiously so, when compared to LOTR (film edition). With LOTR film I believe this was a sincere adaptation and we forgive distressing departures, like not having Faramir immediately send the Hobbits and Gollum on their way (Personally, this is a big deal - I believe this shows a remaining nobility to some among Gondor's leaders of the earlier nobility of the Numenoreans; sure this entire matter would be tough to implement in film; the other is how the army of the dead is handled; in the books they don't arrive at Minas Tirith). Film, especially those made in major motion picture houses really have to meet certain goals which will captivate an audience, and draw in ticket buying public, so in LOTR Jackson inserted more conflict and resolution, and visuals, which was far more subtle, or implemented differently in the books. If they do that, and yet do not entirely betray an author that's an accomplishment. Myself, I'm also a great fan, having long ago passed beyond twenty readings of LOTR trilogy (including the Appendices) and have read some of the Silmarillion, and of course the Hobbit many times too. Perhaps one problem very recent creatives have with this material is that they are trying to capture the spirit of an artist's work, but the artist is from a generation which matured around 100 years ago, and was a deeply religious Catholic, unafraid to employ concepts of his beliefs in writing. Tolkien had been born in 1892, and thus, in 1924 would have been 32 years old and thus making his way and developing his family and household. The creatives of today are a similar age, and at a similar point in life, but are immersed in 2024 styles of thought, and perhaps they are far more removed from traditional religious ideas as are many these days. This is a handicap, I deem. A hundred years can work a great deal of change to culture. Some this probably is a benefit (far easier to use modern gear than the old stuff we grew up with), but much of it also can be a handicap. It seems to me much of what we hear about the people of a hundred years ago is approximate, and often quite wrong. World history during this last 100 years is also handed to us in sometimes distorted form. If is very difficult to find works which seek greatest adherence to actual fact, rather than opinion. Also this tends not to sell books.

@@crtune I’ve been saying for some time now that the modern day creatives biggest issue with LOTR is that they fundamentally don’t understand the Catholic morality and virtues baked into Tolkien’s world. They either don’t understand it and project their own, or they outright reject it. LOTR as a setting only works / makes sense in the context of Tolkiens worldview and values.

It's in the playbook of cultural terrorists to blame the rightfully upset fanbase when their dogshit changes get lambasted. It's pathetic that the media exposes themselves as rank and file political agents when they play along with that narrative. Fans just want the work to be respected and handled with love and care. Instead they hire people who hate the original creation to adapt things to film and TV and act surprised when we hate what they make.

@@CounciloftheRings To me, it's scary. Amazon is growing, and remains, or portends to be an immense power in the world. Sadly, I believe they can lose billions and yet not be seriously harmed. Sad, also that they can obtain literary IP like this and then proceed to hand production over to people who produce art but with great irresponsibility. Perhaps this is how I view it, because I am both a business person and also an artist who specializes in an acoustic instrument and mostly music from orchestral and commercial worlds but not of the type common after the 1970's. I can see how modern tools I love (say a Digital Audio Workstation or DAW) can be a great benefit, but knowing when notes are in tune by your ear is perhaps not as common an art as it once was. Similar things seem evident in some of the Tolkien films or video. LOTR, with its many awards seems to have been work done by people with traditional skills still intact. After this wonderful set of films things go downhill.

I think Asmongold is referring to when Gandalf engaged with the Nazgul at Weathertop. So he is right that Gandalf fought against the Nine. The hobbits and Aragorn saw the lights there when it happened but did not know what it was. Gandalf himself says of the event that, '"They drew away from me, for they felt the coming of my anger and they dared not face it while the Sun was in the sky. But they closed round at night, and I was besieged on the hill-top, in the old ring of Amon-Sûl. I was hard put to it indeed: such light and flame cannot have been seen on Weathertop since the war-beacons of old. At sunrise I escaped and fled towards the north... Four Riders did indeed follow me,"' which is why only five attacked Strider and the hobbits at Weathertop.

Actually it doesn't say how many he fights. A lot of people believe, like yourself, that he fought 9. While a lot believe he only fought 6. Since it never actually gives a number, we can never know for certain. Just because he says 4 followed him doesn't mean all 9 where there. That is just an assumption. I'm not saying that it doesn't sound very plausible, just that it could've been any number over 4 that he was fighting. He could have been fighting 5 and 1 stayed behind to tell the others what happened and what they were doing next.

I think you're absolutely right that it's about providence. But a lot of people who talk about Eru "intervening" in Gollum's fall miss the related theological idea of concursus, which is that God guides and steers his creation without it ever being perceptible most of the time (providence), working *through* the wills of creatures (concurrently, as opposed to conscious collaboration or opposition to them). I think this is what Tolkien was expressing when Eru says in the Music of the Ainur that Melkor will be but a tool in his hand for the devising of things more wonderful than he himself hath imagined (also think of lines like when Gandalf says the pity of Bilbo may rule the fate of many, meaning Eru worked through Bilbo's will in that case, to do good). In other words, all the characters good and bad follow their genuine, authentic motivations, unaware of how Eru is using them and where that will lead. So Gollum really was just insanely ecstatic at getting his precious back, and also that was the will of Eru at the same time, on a different level. It's beautifully ironic, that the intense power of the Ring to dominate wills was its ultimate undoing because it drove Gollum to care so little for anything else, even his own life.

Probably one of my icks, though mind you a minor ick, in the Peter Jackson films was there use of plate armor. Like it's a very late medieval/Renaissance version, almost modernised to be exact of the Arthurian legend where the characters wear plate armor. It would've been nice to see gilded and silvered surcoats and mail along with those winged helms.

(17:30) For me the biggest "fail" of Jackson's LotR was Faramir dragging Fodo all the way to Osgiliath where Frodo almost gives the ring to a Nazgul. That would certainly not have convinced me to let Frodo go to Mordor. "Oh, the director has assured me you'd never pull that stunt again, so... off you go!" -- Faramir. If ever I do a fan edit, that scene is definitely gone.

The worst changes were the character assassinations of Faramir, Théoden, Elron, and even Aragon. Personally, since I loved the Rohirrim, him making Théoden seem like a whiny petulant cowardly king bothered me to the extent that it took me a very long time to come around to appreciate the films. I suppose he wanted to create some arcs for these characters so Jackson really diminished their heroic characteristics. He even did Denethor dirty. He turned Gimli into a joke. He was a fierce and formidable warrior that was turned into comic relief. As was Pippin. And he turns the hero of the entire saga, Sam, into a whiney jealous prat. There have only been two living beings to surrender the ring willingly, and Sam was the only one that did so without Gandalf’s help. I don’t count Tom Bombadil because we don’t know who he is, living or not. I have come to greatly appreciate the movies for what they are after focusing on what they were not for so long. But still, they are inspired by Tolkien. As you might imagine I believe the creators of Rings of Power belong in prison. For the crime of desecration of a sacred treasure of humanity, and therefore to humanity itself.
@kornoldorin

Well said Princess_Feona; I would add Treebeard to the list of Jackson's simplified/stupefied caricatures. Fangorn was the oldest living being in Middle Earth (I assume Tom B came into being before ME) and had great knowledge and wisdom. But Jackson made him a big, kinda of dumb, dangerous to tree killers but kindly to Hobbits character. And the Hobbits "trick" Treebeard into attack Iselngard! Rubbish....

@@kornoldorin oh yes. When I was little I wanted to be Treebeard. That doesn’t really fit with Hollywood’s idiotic narrative that people need to “see themselves” on screen. At least the Jackson films are not infected with that BS.

Honestly, I can't see MOST people delving deeper into the 'LoTR/The Hobbit' stories/moves, past the story/movies themselves. The sheer amount of 'Creation' Professor Tolkien invested into making this entire 'World' took the Man over half a CENTURY to achieve, and he was the absolute best at what he did (Thus far). Gandalf never screamed as he fell. He just shouted, "Fly, you fools!" You also don't seem to grasp the difference in artistic media between novels and films. Films, having such a shorter amount of time to get the story across, necessarily have to up the drama, as well as take shortcuts. Films will never be the same as prose, so you should adjust your expectations.

While I agree it makes a lot of sense to have Smaug’s death take place in the 2nd film… pacing wise, that doesn’t make sense. It doesn’t leave much story to take place for the 3rd film. Also, for the normies, the anticipation ends and kinda wraps the story in a way that I don’t think they would have shown up for the last film. Smaug’s death is a resolution that cuts all built up tension from the first two movies. The tension build-up of the 3rd film after Smaug’s death is self contained, beginning with Thorin’s dissent into madness. They stretched the story across 3 films when it should’ve been told in 2, consequently we get this weird segmentation between the 2nd and 3rd films but there is no way to do it perfectly. They should’ve reached Eribor in the 1st movie and then concluded the story in the 2nd but like Thorin, they lusted for gold.

It's not really about covering everything, but expanding on some of the stuff and correcting important mistakes - like how many times Eru interferes with the world. I also think it's important to counter some of the big misconceptions kept alive, by people repeating them over and over again - like the Nine being kings of Men. I doubt I can stop it all together, but if just a handful stop saying it, I've done my part. Most importantly I got to talk about magic and power, which is a truly fascinating and complicated subject, I think many want to understand more fully. So as said in the start of the video - it's not to lecture Asmongold, but instead explaining more about the lore to those watching the video.
