I came over to Swift with 12 years experience. I was very skeptical at first but I've finally found the perfect fit for me. I miss flatbed sometimes but dry van is much easier. I've been on a semi-local route for over 3 years mostly drop and hook. I get home every other day. A lot of times I go over to Dallas and come right back home lol. I'm very happy here

I worked for Swift for three years. My experience for the most part was pretty pleasant. Thing was, prior to going to Swift I had been driving locally for nine years. I took a break from driving and so my experience lapsed. Swift said they would take me on as a student and so I got on a trainers truck. The trainer was shocked that I knew how to drive, shift and back! I did my hours quick with him and then got my own truck. What was cool was that you can drive maybe just eight hours a day. They give you ample time on 98% of your loads. On those loads that they don’t, make sure you communicate to your driver leader when they’re there. Just to protect yourself. I left because I ended up getting a different driver leader. The one I had been dealing with left the company out of nowhere. I worked with the new one for a couple of months but didn’t feel like I was getting anywhere. So, I left and I’ve been doing pretty good. Remember, it’s all attitude and what you make of it but you also don’t have to be treated like crap

Just so you'll know, that is an inward facings camera. The left angle part is the driver camera. The center is the cab camera. And the right is for the passenger. They don't look like a lends much like the rear of a car, but they are. Info was passed on to me by a KLLM shop mechanic.

This video really helped me to understand more about Swift. I too only want to work 5 days a week.Also only in the daytime primarily. I have been in the construction trucking field and need to get the training to move into 53 ft tractor trailer. To get a great driving job here in Sacramento I need at least 6 months to a year of experience. Even though I have been driving 18 wheels tractor and two bottom dump trailers for at least 7 years! I am worried about the money ( because I make a lot during the season), but like you I am wanting experience. When you said there are terminals with facilities for the drivers I felt more secure. I am a women and need my showers and laundry done.(Also a safe place to park most of the time)! Enough said, thanks for the video, I got some of my cold feet warm. Still nervous, but anyway thanks again!

@Mirage_
@Mirage_ 2 года назад
@JOSHWONDUDE Depends on your experience, what you're hauling, are you getting 500 miles a day or only 250(higher cpm with lower daily mileage) are you working a full 70hr week with avg 500 miles a day? Lots of variables. In my circumstance, I brought home 1k gross, 800 net working 5 days a week. If you land a port job with swift you can make $375 gross a day which is way more than 1400 a week, but those positions are far and few. Good luck!

I really want to get into trucking. I love driving in general and I'm a real gear head. I think tractor trailers are so cool. I am super bummed that it's all automatics though. With how impossible it is becoming to find manuals in 4 wheelers it was my hope that semi trucks would be the last haven for manuals. I have never personally owned an automatic and never will as long as possible, I love manuals. Like I said I love driving and I love it more than anything, automatics really take away from the experience imho. Driving just isn't the same without the additional connection between you and the machine.
@Lalo_thr
@Lalo_thr 2 года назад
I completely understand your point of view, but I have to disagree. I find with manual I cannot enjoy the drive because I need to maintain speed and proper gearshifting, whereas in automatic I can actually enjoy the different views of different locales. That's just me though, I know some people are very good at multitasking and what not
@stevensaid2200
@stevensaid2200 2 года назад
@@Lalo_thr I totally understand! The first thing that came to my mind was how I got my first manual car 15yrs ago. I was the idiot who just went out and bought one without anyone teaching me or any prior knowledge. I was pissing everyone on the road off. Stalling in intersections, I remember getting so flustered with having the extra movement to think about. I know it’s different for everyone but after a couple months of sticking to it it became muscle memory. Now I hardly have to think about it at all, it just happens and my mind is free to think about whatever else. If I wouldn’t have been forced to stick with it by just purchasing a manual, I probably would have quit in those first few weeks.

can't say i'd recommend driving for swift. signed on with this company in august after them telling me i'd be home every week on a dedicated account. heard this from numerous people including the driver qualifiers and the driver leader of that division. come to find out AFTER MY MENTORSHIP that i'd be on an OTR account and out for 3 weeks at a time. they told me all of this literally on the day that I passed the road test. i told them i guess i have no choice and decided to give it a go. well i'm still mad about it. they never called me about the switch up or anything. i'm going to be handing in my resignation soon after giving OTR a shot and hating it. hopefully nobody else has this experience and i'm just the odd one out. luckily there are companies in my area hiring locally for little to no experience needed. i just can only hope i'm not lied to again, really not cool.

I started there back in 99 to get my start experience .26 a mile lol which they got mega loads after a couple years I left then kept driving after 15 years experience came back for .38 lol most companies now pay .60 plus to show u how out of it they are tho I left again because it was taking way to long for dispatch bobtailed 2 days to nearest terminal turned in truck and my manager never knew anything for 2 days after that so 2 days bobtail not authorized and 2 more days and they didn't know so I would have sit 4 days minimum to get dispatch I guess lol

Good day. I am within my first 6 months of solo driving with Swift and have not received at least $1000 a week. I work at least 5 days a week and never turn down any loads. I’ve talked to my driver leader and numerous other senior people at the terminal and get the complete runaround every time. It’s completely frustrating at this point of time. I’ve even had one week where I only took home $400. Nobody seems to want to help.
@Mirage_

Yup. I ran the numbers and its not easy making $1000 in 5 days with Swift, I only signed on with them for that guaranteed $1k a week

The adaptive Cruise: are you able to select Degrees of sensitivity as to when your truck begins to SLOW, due to the car in front of you? I drive 6k-to-8,000 miles per month, driving 10 diff brands of New Cars; all have this variable distance (or variable sensitivity) settings I inquired about (usually 3 settings, at least). Thanks! Well-done video-very thorough and eloquent.

I never looked into changing the settings on the adaptive cruise, never had a big problem with it. Every now and then it would detect something that wasnt there and hit the brakes for a split second, apart from that it seemed to work nicely Thanks for the feedback!

Driving Uber and Lyft typically can make 1500 -1800 in a week. Everyday home . I got my cdl A license . Now looking the money now on truck makes me not to go . Any suggestion will be highly appreciated .
@Mirage_
@Mirage_ Год назад
1500-1800 grossed? what about fuel, maintenance? depreciation? Are you putting money away for a new car to put to work after this one dies out? Trucking requires sacrifice. Sacrifice being away from home, your loved ones, friends and family. But if done right, trucking for a couple years can bring you a great amount of wealth to use elsewhere. Money that can be used in real estate, restaurant franchises, car sales, truck sales, maybe even obtaining a local dedicated lane that gets you home every day. But are you willing to make the sacrifice? Not everyone is. Good luck my friend.

Hey Tony, 2 questions 1) can you take your truck home on your home time? 2) Do you have to take home time in your home state? I’m looking at Fontana but interested in long haul 10-12 weeks out with a 5 day break in between. My grandkids are in NC and I have family in Nashville and Salt lake so I’d like to take my time off around the country, and quit paying rent! Lol
@Mirage_
@Mirage_ 2 года назад
Yes you can request home-time in a different state. I'm from California & requested to be in Albuquerque NM for Christmas & New Years, they routed me there with a load & made it happen (communicated that request at least a month in advance with my driver leader). I'm not sure about bringing the truck home. They'll want you to park it in a 'safe' and non residential area. Good luck & thanks for watching!

5:20 so much on drivers shortage, we will raise your pay to 30 cpm( $750/2500mi); that's about $13/hr.
@Mirage_
@Mirage_ 2 года назад
$750 to 2500miles was hypothetical, I should've used real numbers but 2500 miles at the CPM they had me at (.50) would have been 1250. Only problem is it would've taken me all 70hrs that week to drive 2500 miles. Unfortunately I value my life outside of work a little more than that. Good catch though!
@leepialong
@leepialong 2 года назад
@@Mirage_ that's about $18/hr flat rate. It's about same as a Mcdonald worker for 70 hrs week. No CDL needed, no dangerous work and be home everyday. These Mega carriers chew out all the new truckers and spit them out on the side road. At the same time, they cry on news media on how we gave the drivers biggest raise ever but we still have driver shortages.

If you take it for what it is, it's fine. $50k/yr for UNSKILLED LABOR is not too bad. That said, you are right, after a year it is basically not worth it financially to stay there. You could nearly double going to a smaller or more specialized carrier after you get a year of driving experience.

Definitely need better maintenance but you didn't mention that you get written up for not leaving on time when you go get something fixed having accepted a run, or getting stranded at a hub without a load for days, or having to sleep in chair because there wasn't a cab to slip into and truck in shop and they refuse to pay for motel, or the fact you foot the bill for burned out bulbs, load stabilizers . Glad you got home time, not all new drivers are allowed time by dispatchers who exert enormously abusive pressure and will call driver every 15 min when they know they are sleeping, harrass them for turning phone off. My son's first solo run the airbag blew 15 min from hub and he was laughed at. He persisted and left with PTSD having breakdown in WV being told ditch belongings and dog and take the bus to hub 200 mi away, even though that hub had van. Only the very savvy, strong willed, should drive for them more than 5 mos if at all.

Oh, sorry to hear that. Fortunately my experience with Swift wasn't as bad as the stories I hear/read. I always tell people communication is very important. If something is happening that shouldn't be, follow the chain of command until the problem is resolved. Best of luck to you and your son, thank you for watching.

Wow, here I was thinking truckers made money. Good money. But 1,000 a week is peanuts. Especially today. I was seeing vids of them on tiktok saying they were making what doctors make. 1,000 a week is like a regular job. 2500 miles is a boatload of miles. And then they hand you 750 bucks??? The heck. Swift ain't the way to go from what I am hearing. Maybe those tiktokers were lyin then I guess. Everybody pretending for the camera. Maybe starting a trucking business is the better way to go. And you have 1st hand experience now
