@@Just.Westin Yeah I mean traditional wisdom was to attribute sales largely to the one of one ring (in addition to just being a good set, but there are lots of good sets so what I mean is why it sold extraordinarily well) but idk cases like your roommate seem like a larger driver of sales than gamblers looking to play the lottery.
@@retronymph oh yeah. I completely agree with you. I was just saying that if the set was bad the IP could only take it so far. The fact that it's also a really good set allowed the star power to rocket up the "rankings"
What the pros won't tell you: If you play M:tG, you will spend 5% of your time playing, 5% of your time deckbuilding... and about 90% of your time sorting. So... much... sorting...
your roommate isn't an idiot. He's buying what he wants... Just imagine what would have happened if someone like him had opened the One Ring... they'd NEVER had any idea what it was worth.
@@carldooley9344 very true. He has no regrets over buying the cards. But he bought a ton of magic cards without knowing anything about the products, shown in how he mixed the commander decks up. I just wish he asked me questions after he bought them. Then I wouldn't need to have sorted them.
My favorite part of Lord of the Rings is when Frodo attacks and is tempted by the Ring because I gained 3 life this turn, and then I draw a card because the Ring has tempted me twice this game. "Just like in the books!"
Why is MtG cardboard crack? I had a small season of buying tons of packs, food be damned, i wanted to open boosters, smell the fresh card, see what token or art i would get.
Honestly this is such a good video, I kind of hope that your roommate sorts them again after he's done playing and then asks you to fix his decks when seems interested in the game again
@@PolluxTheBat sorry for confusion. I have one Doctor Who precon. My roomate saw my deckbox and said he had a Deck box. (Referring to his LotR precons)
I'll be honest, that sounds like an absolutely awesome time to me, but I'm weird and I just love sorting cards. I've got my 8,000 card collection sorted by colour > CMC > alphabetical and all cards added to my Moxfield collection, which I can then use to know what cards I have and don't have when building a new deck. I enjoy it so much that I even sorted my friend's 3k card collection in the same way, but again, I'm a weird guy.
Wish I could have helped you. I would have been able to help sort out the decks quicker as I've also bought all of them (as that's how I got back into magic) and because I'm obsessed with UB I know what goes in what deck off the top of my head x.x Side note: I watched this as I'm working on updating my UB only deck
Wow that greenscreen clip is definitely my favorite stop motion lego remake of a declaration of Independence themed remake of Apologize by Timbaland ft. One Republic!
I’m not gonna lie I did the same thing when I got back into it. I stopped playing before Commander and had no fucking idea what I was doing to my buddy asked me to play. I felt so stupid lol
My brother cousin and brother in law have been playing magic for years… the lotr was my gateway drug now I have like 8 commander decks including 5 I built from scratch.
@@PetitePhillyLife I feel like my roommate might be like that. But he's said he only wants LotR cards. It certainly is a gateway though. Glad you liked it!
Just an idear, if your friend ever gets tired of only playing precons - and want to see the other Cards in his Lord of the rings Collection being put to use. Help him make a Cube of the non-precon Cards
I love my friends but not enough to build everything for them. I would build them 1 deck so they can practice with it so they can learn to build the rest on their own. If they feel lost in the next decks they build? I would just give them a deck list so they can do it them selves. If you are gonna play? At least show some intrest in building the rest.
@@AlexRedStar that is a absolutely fair cutoff point. Let me explain a couple personal reasons for why I built ALL of them for him. Which I didn't mention in the video. 1. Me buying the sleeves and assembling the decks is his (early) Christmas present. 2. I have more experience in MTG so I'd be able to do it faster. And because he is very busy, he would never get it done. 3. He said I can use the decks and let my friends use them when I play commander with my play group. So while this is disguised as a generous gift I'm giving him, I gain personal benefits from it too. But again, your cutoff point is very reasonable.
@@Just.Westin i guess thats not a bad offer. And yes i dont belive what you are doing is wrong in any sort of way i comend you for it. Personally? I dont have the stenght to do so haha. But i would help my friends build their own decks in person or just lend them mine untill they get well integrated into the game. So i can teach them sinergy, mulligans and draw test so they can learn the best possible outcome even with the worst of odds. At the end of the day? I even let them proxy or use banned cards to not force them to overspend specially if they end up not needing the proxied cards at the end so they lose $0 money.
@@tuxxle8830 one thing I disagree with that statement is it is a game to be played. Now that the decks are complete my roommate has finally played and he loved it. (He probably won't buy more cards, he only like LotR.) But, the cards they made for this set is an extremely well made set that's very fun to play. In my opinion of course
@@hanitschi in the video I explained that my roommate bought 4 commander precons and mixed them in with hundreds of other cards. So I had to recreate the 4 precons so that we could play commander.
@@Just.Westin yeah, i got that part, but why is he making you do the busy work? i'm sure he's capable of reading the cardnames from a list and sorting accordingly without any prior mtg knowledge
He would be slow at it. I would be faster. He didn't ask me to do it. I choose to do it because he is my friend and I'm being nice. Now we can all play commander. So it's all good!
@@ScarletAxetia yes. And I played with two other friends who have never played magic. They all loved it. Compared to normal magic, they were able to be immersed more easily.
there was a much better and easier way for this. first of all, the most Commander cards have a different symbol. so you can finde over 50% by this. second, if you use something like Moxfield or so on you tablet, pc or smartphoen you can let you show the cards as Art and not only the name so you have with this a better way tu search as just to read the name and search the card by the name. so for the next time, think about the commander edition logo and a decklist there you can see the cards and not need to read the names. much much better.
@@SkyFallenNerolin yep. I used the commander shield icon to find many of the cards. But some of them were printed in the main set and therefore had the regular logo. As for the computer moxfield thing, switching tabs on my computer screen or hovering over card art was a bit too annoying for me. Great suggestions!
@@Just.Westin you can Change on moxfield the View Options. Visual grid Change IT so that you See the full Card without Hover the Mouse over the Card Name. Yes the switching could BE annoying, but for this Just do one Deck and then the next. For each Deck IT goes faster because you have less cards and know the cards better there they are. This is how IT would Work for me 🤔
@@SkyFallenNerolin I appreciate your advice, but I liked the way I did. I claimed it was annoying in the video, but it was the way that worked best for me. If I
