I hope you get a chance to watch this Foil Arms & Hog video...Marathons are for Losers...They always make me laugh...this one reminds me to keep things in perspective: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pflSPiNcO74.html
Huge congrats Barry on your huge PB! I'd imagine the Vaporfly 3 might now have a soft sport in your running heart given how well you ran on the day. Thanks for your run down and experience. And I'm so with you about your pet peeve regarding having the bins too close to the drink stations. I'm the same as you as I remember in some races having to run with a plastic cup in my hand for kms waiting for a bin to throw it into because I didn't want to just dump it. Enjoy the moment and recall it often. Well done on such a good run and once again thanks for sharing your thoughts on the race.
From one Irish man to another, love the videos, congratulations on the race. I'm running May 7th to get a BQ for next year's fingers are crossed. See you there. I bought a pair of Nike VF3s based on your review. I was on the fence for race day shoe.
Do you know, for this marathon I had tried to get a coach...with the aim of trying to kick things into gear for a Boston Qualifying time in 2023...I used the Stryd Marathon Training block...
Amazing effort, congratulations on the pb, so glad you enjoyed the race. Thank you for giving us the full tour as well, now that I've run my first marathon I definitely caught the bug and will start searching for other ones as well, so this is really helpful.
Delighted you've run your first...they are so addictive. This one has all the advantages of a big city marathon, but without any of the disadvantages. Very well worth doing and with the rain connections being so good, getting here form central Europe is so easy..
Fantastic Congrats! You beat your old PR. Now in Boston you will make a new PR! What a year - you just had a big birthday and then this. ‘23 is going to be your best year yet! Thanks!!!
Barry, you put so much time into this Channel for our benefit - it's fitting the marathon gods noticed - what a fantastic result in Rotterdam! Hope the body is not too banged up - enjoy the recovery. I could barely move after my last mara - kudos and thank you for sharing your race so quickly with us here. Here's to many more tears of joy at the next finish line!
Congratulations Barry - running a big PB is like happiness according to the philosophers: you will only achieve it if you do not make it your aim - great video thanks
I watched your comparison video again I run now for fast effort VO2 max and Threshold up to 7k in the Alphafly V1 (with heel insert to add hight) and they are absolutely amazing. Vaporfly V2 just fast at any distance. I got the Endorphin Pro 3 and did one 10k Tempo run in them. So comfortable at any speed but not as unique as the Nike duo. But excellent metrics in the Endorphin Pro 3 though it felt quite easy.
I like the Endorphin Pro 3 for tempo days. For racing I found a vagueness/lack of stability in the forefoot. The Vaporfly 3 was just a breeze in Rotterdam. I find it takes me time to lace to the right tightness, but after that they were a joy. I was also surprised how little wear there was in them after the marathon…
@@OldManRunner I had lacing problem with the Vaporfly V2. I changed the laces to normal cotton laces. Problem solved. No such problem with the same laces in my Alphafly.. 🤔
Dutch orange!!😂😂 But of course Dutch orange!! I do LOVE that focus on discipline and self control rather than focusing on a finishing time … focusing on the process rather than the results, now isn’t THAT an important life lesson for every aspect of our lives!!! My goodness Barry, you sometimes wake up screaming ??!!!!😮 I wonder how long it took your long-suffering wife to get accustomed to that!!! Once again HUGE CONGRATS Barry!!! Bloody brilliant !!! I’m soooo looking forward to the day I can keep up with you!!!
This time around I felt I finally got the hang of running a marathon, the key was the discipline of holding the pace, qualifying for Boston has taken a weight of my back/mind...and I was very happy with the kit...more on that anon. Yes the screaming is difficult for anyone who has the misfortune to be sleeping beside me. It can be quite random and out of the blue or there can be a slow build up...but when it starts! I can't say its a lot of fun for me either, but I've been doing it since I was a child so i guess it's here to stay...
@@bev9708 I’m in Brussels airport editing the next video … hopefully it works and goes out at the usual time. I think you might like it… it has nothing to do with running…Am also trying to research the next marathon and figure out how to film it…
Next is the Jack and Jill Marathon in Washington State in July. The marathon is on Saturday and Sunday and has a reputation as being scenic and also a good Boston qualifying course. My original plan was to try to run a fast Saturday and try and film it on Sunday and make a story of the race...and I guess I will try for a fun fast pressure free run and then film also the Sunday...then I am in the New York marathon in November and that will again just be to run and film and have fun...
Hi Barry, first congrats for your PB! 3:43 is fantastic! What a pace! You took a big risk by deviating from your game plan, but it worked this time! Great achievement! Kudos to your fitness! 👏👏👏 BTW, I think using Morten CAF drink mix the night before was probably not a good idea. Caffeine probably affected your sleep. I am few years behind you and don't have a BQ time yet (my best is 3:49 in 2022). I am hoping to run Boston one day. But I heard good things about Rotterdam. Another interesting factoid is that they do Quarter Marathon there as well, instead of the usual 10K distance. As a matter of fact, I didn't know 1/4 marathon race existed at all beforehand. A Duch friend of mine ran the 1/4 marathon. This past weekend, I ran 10K race here in Austin, TX. Cap10K is the largest 10K in Texas and 6th in USA. It is a rather hilly course, at the beginning there is some congestion issues as well. Not one for PBs anyway. Ran 56:26. Top 20% in my age group. Significantly slower than my PB and slower than last year's 51:49 in the same race. I'll take it, having not done a lot of runs recently. At the moment, this is the best I can do with literally pain in the a**. I am still having some residual pain, but it is getting better.
Great to hear from you Tolunay. For some reason everything came together in Rotterdam. I was very pleased that I could hold a pace… even more so that it was a good one. I fully recommend Rotterdam. The weekend is a festival of running. There is a City Race and a young persons race as well as the 1/4 Marathon. Everything is very compact so you can stay downtown and not have much travelling to do. I hope your pains ease up, but as long as you are enjoying it. The CAF the night before wasn’t too bad. I usually take the non CAF but every time I am restless the night before…though I do put a lot of focus on sleeping well and largely that works for me…
Well done Barry great effort ! Enjoyed the video as always. Just like to add that anyone thinking of buying Vaporfly 3, be very careful as there are so many counterfeit ones about ! I nearly got caught myself !
It will be done and dusted now, I hope your race went well (I am sure I will find out). Rotterdam is on my possible list for next year if I don't get into London (you will be in Boston :-) ). I use race dots too, and they work well. Ah as suspected (end caught me off guard I just thought it was the preview) Fantastic news ! Very well done and I shall see you in New York sir!
Looking forward to seeing you in New York...and just enjoying the experience. How did you get on in Manchester? Rotterdam is super to do, 100% recommended...and you can get a train directly to London, though flying from Manchester is probably easy and then there are the ships...
@@OldManRunner Yup I too got a PB!! , Did not quite get BQ (out by 4 minutes ).. but at 54 I have plenty of time 🙂. To be honest I am not looking to do Boston until 2025 (Can't afford it so soon after New York , and my wife would not be cool with me blowing another holiday for 4 days and a sweaty husband ). So its all good. I ran it comfortably hard and it worked very well for me , its how I plan to do it in future. I hit the wall at mile 24 but only dropped 20 seconds on 24 and 25(40 in total) like you, I blast it the last 600m.
Fantastic! I definitely found the drop in the qualifying every 5 years helped...and you get to the double nickel next year and it will drop...something to look forward to
@@OldManRunner have you decided if you'll do Boston in 2024? I'd expect that your time will be fine when the qualifying times are released. Hope you saw my comment yesterday about the sale for on running shoes yesterday.
“Run a verified race PB in any SOAR kit during your 12-month subscription period and receive £50 credit towards updating your SOAR wardrobe.” I’d be interested to know how this works in theory if you’re applying.
Yes. I am definitely doing Boston 2024...I checked all the margins of qualifying and at 6minutes under I should be grand...but I suppose you never know...I didn't se your comment yesterday but will go looking...
Congrats! Would you recommend this marathon to someone who’s trying to BQ? In terms of the elevation, congestion, weather conditions, and of cos, ease of signing up, etc… Thanks!
100%. Very easy and flexible sign up. No hills apart from the bridge. Great friendly crowds… very easy bib pick up. Some very fast times have been set on the course. Most locals speak English which also helps and the temperature is usually about perfect. There was little or no wind when I ran but that may vary. Very best wishes wherever you try to BQ. I’m running the Jack and Jill on Saturday… it’s supposed to be very good for a BQ…
@@OldManRunner Thx for the advice! I normally run one marathon in the fall and one in the spring, so the Rotterdam one sounds like a good option. As for Jack & Jill, the timing may not work for me, but thx any way! Good luck this weekend and look forward to your video!
