I can't believe we're nearing the end of summer (although the heatwave sweeping through the West is proving otherwise)! I can't believe it has already been 2 months since I posted the video on cactus seedlings in my outdoor shade house and it has been nearly 2 months since I made the video on the mighty Saguaro as I re-potted my one-year old Saguaro seedlings. I was outside doing my usual staring at the seedlings and thought I ought to share it with all you cactus-loving RU-vid friends as well.
Some of the seedlings have been doing great, especially the Saguaro, Mammillaria, Astrophytum, and Turbinicarpus. Others have mixed results - mainly the Ariocarpus. I'm still climbing that steep learning curve and find myself losing my footing and sliding backwards here and there, but I keep trying to climb.
As the cooler season approaches, I am contemplating what in the world to do with these young seedlings that are outside. I can't bring them in the house because I don't have enough space nor light. Maybe I'll play it by ear and see how they do as the temperature drops... I have until November before that critical moment arrives. Perhaps I'll find a way to provide a bit of warmth to the seedlings outside, maybe via some heat mats... we'll see.
For those of you who leave your seedlings outside year-round, how do you handle the winters?

Oh, you have a lot of beautiful young cacti seedlings growing so well🤲💞I hope the 'dampening off' quits soon and your Ariocarpus seedlings make it🙏I get the same thing especially with any seedlings germinating and growing for the first year. I enjoyed watching so much🤲🌟

Thank you so much for the wonderful comment, Newman! It seems that tray of Ariocarpus is doomed but the other Ariocarpus seedlings are still going strong. It's still quite warm in Arizona and the seedlings are taking advantage of it!

They’re all looking awesome, Jenny. Looking nice and healthy. I’ve noticed with my Euphorbia seedlings that they like quite a bit more light than cactus seedlings. Thank you for sharing with us. Have a wonderful day from Edith & myself 🌵☀️🌺🌼🌸🏜

Gosh this winter is going to be interesting, Daz. I think I have no choice but to leave them outside in the shade house, I don't have enough space indoors! Maybe I'll have to play it by eye and see how they do as the temperatures drop and decide whether to run an extension cord out there and provide some heat. We'll see. Happy growing, Daz! It's good to confirm that your Euphorbia also love more light!

Absolutely loved loved this video showing all your cactus seedlings 😃🌵👌 Wow they are so big and look amazing... and so many Astrophytum! I love seeing young cactus 😄 You must have perfect growing conditions with that heat you have there and light... as I've said I wish mine would grow that quick...think I'll need to keep my seedlings in constant heat using my heat mats for longer, think I'll try that 🤔 Enjoyed the video 😊🌞👌

Dawwww thank you so much, Claire. I love seeing other people's cactus seedling videos and updates, I can't get enough of them. I really do think these Southwestern cactus absolutely love the heat (even when I don't lol). I think a heat mat may very well help, I would love to know if it makes a difference!

It's good seeing you over here in RU-vid land! I'm so happy you're inspired to grow and experiment! You're in the perfect climate for it too. Omg, what am I going to do this winter with all these seedlings...

That looks like one of the happiest nurseries I’ve seen this summer! Tons of new growth and color. 🎉I did notice one tray of the cactus babies has plastic partitions throughout the tray. The others do not. 🤠Ideas from a Texan observer here: perhaps the plastic is heating up the plants or out gassing (just an idea) Or the tiny walls are keeping the air flow muted. Maybe the oxygen and co2 can’t exchange adequately. (I have no expert training) maybe just take out the partitions?

You've got a keen eye to notice those plastic dividers, Deborah! Another commenter who is very experienced in growing cactus also noticed those dividers. I was using them to keep track of which seed packs were sown in which section in the tray. I will take those dividers out and see if things get better, there's really nothing to lose at this point! Thank you so much for taking the time to notice and make suggestions!

Dear Jenny, all of the seedlings are doing very well under your care. Regarding those problematic A. fissuratus, I have a question: is there a particular reason for that transparent plastic dividers in the tray? Not that I'm expert on the Ariocarpus (I only have several 4-year old seedlings A. fissuratus, that's all) but as I read in various cacti-oriented publications, they are very fond of plenty of air circulation. Also, (European growers at least) claim that the peat is the worst possible substrate for that genus, and keep them in exclusively mineral mixtures (actual composition depends on the author of the paper and every successful grower seem to have a particular recipe), but in general some mixture of pumice and limestone seem to be working well. Mind, while limestone is important for growth, it's also well-known growth retardant, so generally is advised to keep seedlings in a mixtures with less limestone, while I have seen mature plants kept in several collections in pure limestone (many growers, particularly from south Europe, prefer marl). I keep my fissuratus seedlings in mixture of approx. 80% pumice and 20% limestone (dolomite, to be precise).To that I add a small amount of zeolite of coarser grade. These are just my thoughts and maybe you can try experimenting with some of your seedlings and see if it works better. Best regards, Nino

Hello Nino! It's interesting you noticed the clear plastic dividers in the trays, another commenter also noted that. I used these trays early in my growing journey and the dividers were there so I could keep track of which seeds were sown in what part of the tray - each section indicates a different seed pack/catalog number. The trays themselves do have holes in the bottom for drainage. I have since moved away from trays and use nursery pots instead - much easier to manage. Peat is also mentioned by many growers as a big no-no here too, but I've had a lot of success with it for some reason. I'm using peat+perlite in all the pots and cactus soil+pumice in the trays, and the pots are doing much better so far. Only time will tell! By next year I should have a better feel for how it goes. I have quite a few adult Ariocarpus and I found they need some organic matter in my climate, otherwise, they dry out so quickly. I was so worried about rot in the beginning that I used to use 15% cactus soil + 85% inorganic but the pots would dry out so quickly and the plants always looked dry and slightly unhappy. I have since switched to 25% cactus soil + 75% pumice and they are doing better and staying plumper. I do avoid over-potting them though, always trying to choose a pot that fits their root system just right - so far so good! I need to make a video on my mature Ariocarpus - that's on my to-do list! It's interesting you mention limestone and how it simulates their natural habitat but also can stunt growth, but perhaps gives them a more natural look. Always a delicate balance between growing medium and the desired growth rate and look.

@@cookiescacti Thank you very much for your answer. I learned from it and it's of great value to me. Obviously, there is no "perfect" cactus soil and everyone should develop a mixture that works best under the circumstances. Your observations make much sense, since you are growing your Ariocarpus plants in more-or-less natural environment and climate conditions. I believe that many/most advice regarding "perfect substrate" comes from the experience of cacti growers that keep their plants exclusively in greenhouses that retain much more moisture and, therefore, allow for slower drying of the substrate/soil. I wish you the very best of luck with your A. fissuratus. var. lloydii seedlings. Best regards, Nino

Those saguaros are growing at a great rate for being 2 year olds. There is however a hack to grow them even faster since I have some 4 month old pereskiopsis saguaros exceeding 2 inches in diameter
@cookiescacti
@cookiescacti Год назад
Actually, they're 1 year and 2 months old :) I have heard that grafting makes them grow super fast! Grafting is a skill I need to learn, especially in 9-1-1 situations such as saving a rotting plant! Have you de-grafted a Saguaro yet? Do they re-root pretty easily?

I use seed raising mix perlite and a small amount of a fine sand seed raising mix half and quarter of the sand and perlite but the quantity depends on the amount of seeds being sowing I seal mine in take away container and damp down the soil with C boiled water and seal the container until it is cooled down and put the seeds in a light coating of a fungicide and sow put some where in the warmth until they have struck leave in the container for several weeks until they are big enough to slowly unseal the container over a week or so I hope this helps

That's so awesome, Kaye! How long have you been growing cactus from seed? I've tried experimenting this summer by putting some of my Astro seedlings outside in the shade house and leaving some indoors under grow lights. I think the indoor ones are actually growing faster but I have no choice but to put them in the shade house now - no space left indoors LOL.
