Of course I made my sails, according to Todd's book !!!! They are called ''balanced lugger sails'' Material can be found at Fabric stores where they sell all kinds of fabrics to make clothing. I don't recall what kind of fabric, but it's made from polyester (not dacron - witch is usualy used to make genuine sails.) But...if you have some extra money, don't hesitate to buy DACRON from a sailmaker OR order online from Sailrite.com. They carry all you can need to make sails. By the way, congratulations for purchasing the book, to me it's the ''bible'' of canoe rigging and other small crafts as well. Cheers from Canada.
A truly beautiful boat. I will convert my own canoe to sail. How do you determine best mast height and position as well as best sail area ? Would like to make my sails from 6 oz. cotton canvas. Any thoughts on how to design ?
Hi Thank you for good words. First thing to do (like I did), purchase the book: ''Canoe Rig, The essence of the art'' from Todd Bradshaw. It worth the money for not making costly errors. You will learn everything you have to know for rigging your canoe and how to make sails (plans and measures included) from lateen to lug sails. Also, making masts and spars, pulleys, knots and so on. You can't goof by any means if you simply follow direction from Mr. Bradshaw. Good work.
By the way, I'm any longer canoe sailing. In 2012 I,ve built my own cruising sailboat 19 ft long. It can sleep 2 people comfortable a,d even more pleasure. You can see her in my other video.
@@grafophone One of the best books for rigging a sailing canoe , that is out there. Written by sailmaker and canoe expert , as well as talented artist. Highly recommended , I have this book and read it before I got started building my canoe...
+grafophone I know I'm new to the sailing thing, but I thought leeboards/daggerboards/keel was for stability and tracking (countering the airfoil effect from the sail) not helm?
Hi, thanks for watching my video. Canoe (empty) weight 85 pounds, outriggers are 23 pounds each and arms are approx. 4 pounds each. Video is still there but I'm not using it anymore. I've built a 19 ft cruising sailboat since and sailing her for 3 years now. I can sleep in the roomy cabin and have meal at small table. Cooking is made outside on cockpit bunk using a propane camping stove.
