I was gonna do voice over to explain everything with photos but I don't have time to with a 1 year old. It would also be a long split series of videos. I may do it later but I wanted to show you guys who are watching my channel on what the deal is with the skiff that I have been fishing on, on the last few videos. I don't kayak anymore so this is my main watercraft. I built this specifically to replace my kayaks to get to further distance areas that I never was able to get to. This has made my fishing days a lot more enjoyable.
The slide show will show almost 95% of the build from start to finish. I lost some photos through switching phones. If you like to see written detail of the build, it is on my instagram @Hoang.Nguyen82
Enjoy the slideshow video!

Thanks for watching!! Lots of companies are money grabbers with poor customer service nowadays. There are only a few Custom builders who have that type of service but them again, boat prices are outrageous! Building one takes time and effort, but you save so much money and you can build it the way you want it and in the end, you can say you built a boat out of the garage.

I’m 61, but full of energy look 45 I’ve been told. I wished I wasn’t a computer dink. I am building a little 10’ long catamaran pontoon type little boat just so I can get to a few of my fishing spots down on the Texas coast, hv to cross several ship channels and deeper water and the Bull sharks and hammerheads I don’t feel like messing with. So I designed a cool looking Sponson/pontoon, one on each side with a 3/4” marine plywood flat deck w/a chair on it basically a floating deck with a 74lb riptide trolling motor 24vl. My 21’ center console was stolen along with my 2,500 dollar rear bumper and led lighting abs just about all of my fishing gear electronics was locked up inside boat compartments. Insurance labeled as suspicious because of the cost they don’t realize how much fishing gear costs, especially when it’s top of the line Avet, Shimano, ABU, rids custom ordered hand tied, even with receipts so boat insurance people be aware they will screw ya. Anyway I know how to record on my iphone, I also hv a go pro, but damn if I know how to edit any of the vids I could make, or how to get a u tube channel and post or upload videos. I researched from ground up on building kayaks skiffs etc along with watching vids. Talking with fiberglass companies had to learn from bottom up, my right side pontoon what I’m calling them I made a lot of mistakes and wasted a lot of glass. My second one won’t take me half tge time along with not taking 4-5 showers daily from fiberglass dust, I beat that like a step child, there is a secret I learned from a Insulation fiberglass man msn so cool. No itch, thanks to total Boat and us composites taught me alot. After this one is done gonna look really cool with the side consoles I hv designed and made outta HD cardboard just needs to glass them and get some floatation foam in them to hold the 2”x 4” I’m mounting inside them for support. Your boat is super cool great work, I’m going to build a scooter boat with a 69 Hp on it next getting brave. But going to hv to find a heated abs Air Conditioned place I can rent or use for 1/2-1 year while building it. People out there hv some super cool ideas, I used every one I could, including designing and building my own shallow water anchors going to hv one on each pontoon 8’ fiberglass poles that will fold down o to desk of boat whine traveling. msnwished I could hv posted that video

Crazy story. Insurance is only good for small claims as we all know now right? Good luck on your builds. Sounds almost like a Craig Cat style build. Perfect for the saltwater flats. Do you not have space in the back yard for a covered awning? Ah you need A/C! I built mine over the winter so I didn't have to deal with the heat. But the cold temp made the epoxy less runny so it was difficult at times to wet out epoxy. The plus side was it allowed me a lot of working time. You ever need help with video editing, I could try and help somehow. It's not that difficult. It's really just cutting and pasting.

It's fun to build your own boat. I probably would have beefed up the tow point on the bow and the bow stem in general for that size boat (well actually I did on my boat). But then I've seen a skiff with a sturdy bow stem get the entire bow section jerked off before so actually a break away point might not be the worst idea 😅
@FishingWithHoang
@FishingWithHoang Год назад
They're are as beef as I could get them. The bow eye has quite a few layers of glass on the inside of the hull. The outside has 2 layers of 1208 glass along the keel. The stern eyes have backing plates on the inside of the hull. I think the area that takes the most beating is the Power Pole mount which has backing plate inside of the hull too. Everything is glassed. Going on 3+ years and I sure hope nothing gets ripped apart!

Boat looks great, I have a good idea how much sanding and mixing epoxy goes into that build , I’m trying to convince myself it’s worth it.
@FishingWithHoang
@FishingWithHoang 2 года назад
Thankyou... Sanding wasn't that bad actually. All the prep work done during glassing helps lessen fairing. I didn't spend that much time fairing and sanding the hull and it still came out great. Especially for a home built boat. Majority of the sanding was done with a orbital sander. Hard to reach or small radius areas were blocked. It was worth the time and effort spending less than $2k on the hull from plywood to paint. But that was before the pandemic. Good luck on your decision!

Great job sir, this build looks awesome.. Does it come with instructions I've never glassed before whatsoever how do you know what kind of glass to use and how to lay it, what direction, how much do you overlap the layers? I'd hate to build it and sink on the maiden voyage lol...
@FishingWithHoang
@FishingWithHoang 2 года назад
Thankyou! The plans only come with full sized templates for all parts of the hull. Transfer those to plywood and cut them out. After stitching and epoxying the joints, you glass all joints with either glass you cut out or you can use glass tape. The plans also comes with all building materials listed. Some can be modified. As you glass the joints, you'll learn how to work with the glass. Majority of the glass joints are inside and under the floor so you'll never see them when the boat is completed. Glassing the outside of the hull is fairly simple. I had zero experience when I built the boat. Overlap can be as much as you want but also limited to the width of the glass fabric. Join Saltboatworks Builders Group on facebook. All questions are answered by current builders. The group is pretty active daily. Saltboatworks youtube channel shows basic glassing too so you might wanna check that out also..

Beautiful rig. Awesome workmanship. How much water does the completed boat draft? How heavy is the hull after being glassed?
@FishingWithHoang
@FishingWithHoang 2 года назад
Thank You! The boat drafts around 6.5" inches fully loaded with 2 people. A little less with one person and light load. I built mine a bit on the heavier side. The estimated hull weight from the plans is 450# pounds. I never weighed my boat but I'm suspecting it's somewhat around 490-ish pounds with all the modifications I did to the hull.

@FishingWithHoang
@FishingWithHoang Год назад
Have a great time building! Every single build is different. I guess it depends on how you will be using the boat. A few weeks ago, I tested out lowering the outboard at the very bottom of the jackplate, then gradually raised it while running. The more I raised it up, the more performance I gained. We're not talking huge numbers, but if I can remember, the prop loosened up around 22-23mph and jumped up to 25-26mph instantly. Any higher, the prop blows out. You can hear air mixing into the prop. It also loosened up the sensitivity of the steering so it took less effort to steer the tiller. I use the jackplate a lot when I get into the shallow flats. We're talking a foot or so of water or less. Had a kid who built his and said his felt a bit sluggish with a Yamaha 25. We talked about jackplates. He added a non adjustable jackplate. He was getting 23mph. After the jackplate install he got up to 27mph. I'd say, go for it! If I had to do it all over again, I should have gone with a Bob's Machineshop jackplate. It was around $1100 at the time which steered me away. The Atlas micro jacker was around $700. I keep hearing bad things about the Atlas jackplate, but knock on wood, mine has been running flawlessly. One last thing to thing about which is not on this video is Trim Tabs. (There's a walkthrough video of my boat updated currently. Check out that video for more details on my build if you'd like to.) If you had to choose either trim tabs or jackplate, I would go with Trim Tabs. Since these boats are weight sensitive, the trim tabs help tremendously to keep the bow down depending on load and keeps the nose up in choppy water without porpoising. My boat porpoises like crazy if I don't use the trim tabs half down at 18mph+. But of course, having boat is a great luxury to have. You can really trim out the boat depending on weather, current, load, etc on the fly. Let me know if you have any other questions!
