Next year when you're ready to upgrade the mower, you want to get a Mo-Co (Mower-Conditioner) It combines a disc mower with a conditioner that crimps the hay so it dries much faster. They are the way to go , they mow fast and really cut the drying time.

@@OutoftheWoods0623 He is correct. Basically they grooved rollers that crimp the stem and aid in drying. It's especially helpful for plants that retain water in the stem, clovers and some grasses. Wet hay in a bale is a massive fire hazard and because of how compact it is in the bale it's pretty difficult to handle if it catches on fire. All good, thanks for the videos...all of them not just this one

I grew up on my parents ranch. We raised registered Beefmaster cattle. I’ve baled probably a couple of million bales of hay. We didn’t bale round bales, but square or rectangle bales. We had three hay barns, one for each type of hay that we baled. We had two tractors that were just for baling. We always used John Deere equipment. We had a sickle cutter that you could adjust for the size of wind row that you wanted, a wind rower to turn the rows for drying, and a baler. For loading the baled hay, we had to conveyor loader that attached to the side of our trailer. I knew other ranchers who would skip the wind row turning because they would bale lighter bales. I baled 80lbs bales and didn’t want any mold growth so I turned the drying hay. At our feed barn we had a long feed trough and a silage shredder that we could run the three different hay types through and an auger that ran the feed down the trough.

Oh my gosh how much things have changed. We didn’t have cutters like that. We had the old sickle mowers. No tedders only hay rakes. Forget round bales, it was all square bales and most had to be stacked in the barn. And don’t get started on soybean hay. All this for a dollar a hour and durn proud to get it. Lawd the times have changed

As fun as it was and as much as i love making hay, im pretty pooped and kinda glad its over. 1400 squares and 172 rounds.....not too shabby for a fat retiree. Next thing you will need that you dont know yet, a hay wagon. Keep up the great content my friend. jj from Charlotte

remember when bloomberg said anybody could farm - well you are finding out that is not the case - lot of understanding of stuff has to come about , might check out small farm solutions for small farm equipment , the tedders break the stems of plants helps to dry the hay , we used haybines up home in mid western ohio- used to put up around 5000 bales of hay and then straw, then went into silage , but now in southern indiana with a small hobby farm

Say, Nathan, you are now a *farmer*! I have heard that in many states, there are many tax benefits if one is registered as a farmer. I guess you could check with your accountant. I do not know about Tennessee and my memory only reflects maybe ten years ago. Too, if one is a Farmer, you can buy diesel much cheaper, as they sell a colored diesel for farmers at a much cheaper cost per gallon. A farmer. I am not sure what qualifies, but as you sell your hay rolls, this means that you farm. Too, also you might could buy some red clover seed or even alfalfa seed and broadcast the seeds over your grass. Not just for pretty flowers and more butterflies, as these plants fix nitrogen into the soil to enrich the soil and if you “advertise” that there is clover or alfalfa in the hay, you might could sell them at a higher price as these bales or rolls would have a higher value.

Nathan and his toys. 😁 Just as well you live now and not a couple of hundred years ago in England... The Industrial Revolution saw the invention of machines in many industries. Most people think of factories but in rural areas the places most affected were farms and the new equipment did the work of many farm labourers. It was a terrible problem for the farmworkers as their jobs often meant they got somewhere to live - but if the job disappeared, their families would become homeless and hungry. The farmworkers started to destroy the new machines; tractors, harvesters, ploughs - all met the wrath of the people being thrown off the land. There were riots across southern England and the destruction continued. "Machine-breakers" they were called, wrecking the machines and setting fire to farm buildings. If and when the law caught up with them, the machine-breakers would get a swift trial and when they were found guilty (a pretty much predetermined verdict) some were hanged - and others were sentenced to transportation and sent to Australia's penal colonies. One of my great-great-times-great-uncles was a Machine-breaker. Sentenced to seven years penal servitude in Australia's most notorious prison. After six and a half years of hard labour, he was pardoned and given the option to return home. He came back, but as a further injustice, because he was no longer the responsibility of the state, he had to pay his own fare! So, Nathan, as you ride around on your tractor, making hay while the sun shines, think of my great-great-times-great-uncle William and if you do tackle that hill, make sure you're driving a tractor with a roll-bar!

don't know if anyone told you .. really all you need is a sickle mower or something to cut your grass. we use sickle mowers Rouse mowers. and then we either use a side-delivery rake a wheel rake or an old dump rake and then a baler little square bales, huge square bales like 16 hundred to 1800lbs square bales. round huge bales 1300 to 1800lb bales or small round personal bales, which are anywhere from 40 to 80lbs. so you need three things a mower a rake and a baler and that is it.. A tedder hahaha right. when you rake it flips your hay over to cure or dry it. Thats all that thing does you bought.. which isn't necessary when you have a rake. The thing you bought? is irrelevant. we have been haying since my great grandfathers time in south dakota back in the 1800's. We just up-grade now and then. From his time with horses pulling mower and rake and then wagons to collect hay and children or family to use pitchforks to load hay on wagon and then un-load it at barn. and there we used ropes and pulleys to ge it to top of barn in hay storage loft. To now tractors with loaders to stack huge round and square bales.... on trailers and then unload and put in stacks in hay yard. But when i was younger for extra money me and others used to go thow square bales for .5 cents a bale. it was where we got our spending money. we went from ranch to ranch farm to farm.. and we only got paid when the job was done. so haying really isn't that hard. Cut, rake, bale, haul, stack,.... simple. just like your wood..... cut, haul, put on mill cut, shim, stack, dry and sell. Wood milling is harder then hay storage.

Hey! I just thought I'd let you know! Back sometime ago; when we were dairy farming, we had a hay tedder that you could set up for tedding hay. Then; after the hay was ready, reset it up in a different way to rake hay into your windrow. It was really easy to set up each time and will save you from buying extra equipment. We hardly ever used the old hay rake anymore. I think that this tedder was a Gehl. It's been a while since then, and we sold out the dairy shortly after we purchased the tedder due to health issues. But, I think it was a Gehl. The place we bought it was local and sold primarily Gehl and Massey Ferguson equipment. I thought I'd give you a heads up to help save you some money, time, and storage space. Good luck and thanks for the video!

Up here in Wisconsin, Dad cut the hay with a sickle mower, crimped/crushed it with a crimper, that's what we called it, I got the job of raking it then we baled it with a square baler with a wagon behind that I loaded the bales on, brought it to the barn and unloaded it with a hayfork that I pulled back and forth with another tractor to raise 10 bales at a time into the loft. I'm 68,so ya know how long ago that was. And I'm a female. LoL. We worked hard on our dairy farm, but wouldn't have traded the experiences for anything.

The tetter is called a fluffer in south Mississippi. As soon as you cut your hay you need to fluff it to start the dryiny process. The faster you can dry it the faster you can get it off the ground. Mother nature is not kind hearted and weather guessers do not have a perfect record. Have fun and stay safe!

Being behind on cutting hay is a good thing; Good help and machinery. Yes sir, interesting! That's what farmers do, make what they need if they can't buy it. See the difference? The drum pulls cut grass into a wind row. The other cutter lays the grass down so it will dry sooner. The tractor motor "throws" to the right and this helps keep the tractor on the hill. A good neighbor!

Great to see you getting into hay...Little advice on the drum mower and I am sure Clyde told you this when you bought it if you got to speak to him...pull in the field, stop, swing it around, level it up, turn it on, and never pick it up again until you are done mowing the field. Also, they will mow as fast as you can drive the tractor. I laughed when you went and got the hay tedder from the man in chuckey...you should have considered picking that 3point rake up as cheap as it is. It would have got you a good basic hay rake to get started for now. Oh, and I laughed because you bought both the mower and the tedder from the same family just in 2 different locations and didn't even know it.

Outstanding! This video showed me the incredible process of sawmilling. Seeing those huge logs being cut so precisely is captivating. This video is incredibly clear and detailed. I'm excited for your next video. Keep producing such amazing content!

Yeah you should have gotten a disk mower. They are much faster and bigger cut than the drum mower. Those drum mowers are for very small acreage.

Nathan you need a disc mower hands down. I had an mc3700 Vermeer on my TYM907 ran it about 8 mph. Ate the brome grass as fast as you could keep your pants in the seat. I would let it lay for a day or Two then use my vr1022 rake to take Two windrows to one. Then round bale with the 605 XL. We found little use for a teddy unless your doing alfalfa which you don’t want to lose the leaves. We custom baled 600 acres rule of thumb down and up in 3 days.

The last time I cut hay was back in the early 80's and I think that was a bar mower on a Ford 5000 tractor. Pretty sure the disc mower I used was on the Ford County. (It's been a long time since I used to help out on friends parents farms and round bales were barely heard of then)

Make sure your cats are away from those fields when you're mowing. They like to hide in the high grass and I've seen some pretty bad things happen to animals when mowing hay.

Nathan All that equipment that you buy. Maybe invest in a sony camera or something that will work when you need it to work And change the oil in that drone. Its knocking a tad

Better safe than sorry on inclines, as tractors become top heavy when the centre of gravity changes from the normal flat ground. Keep safe and enjoy yourself!

It's been a long time since I worked hay but I am curious why the sickle bar mower fall out of favor?

You can drive alot faster even with the drum mower, maybe an idea... you let mike cut and you start tedding the grass already so it is spreaded and dries faster.

Just put the camera point it out the window and let us see you cut hay. And get cut in hay Mike's going to end up doing all of it. Then when you let us see you cutting hay You got it in high speed why?

I saw the tripod shadow while you were using your drum mower, since you told us before that we should be looking for it 😉
