This is an extremely helpful video. Thank you. We've been chatting about this in our local forum. It would be a real shame if clients restricted heavily like this and then came away thinking it wasn't very effective. I came to FS after reading the research report "A marvellous opportunity for children to learn" so I was keen to follow the principles closely in order to maximise the 'FS benefits'. Many practitioners I know have had to adapt and use all their resourcefulness to make the best of what they're given. As an outdoor educator, I do the more structured, curriculum-based work and I'm also therapeutically trained. Each has it's place and value. I'm all for clearer communication between clients, participants and leaders so our offerings are safe, fit for purpose, and deliver the outcomes the participants want and need.

Absolutely - we can't expect the same outcome from something that gets restricted and watered down and as you say it would be a terrible shame if people then thought 'Forest School' doesn't work like its says it does, when they haven't resourced it properly to actually be 'Forest School'!

That is an excellent breakdown of what is a thorny problem for a lot of leaders at the moment. Outdoor time is definitely better than no time at all, but without allowing for the time, resources and ratios that Forest School needs, you won't get Forest School results. I totally agree that as leaders we need to be a lot more expressive about the benefits of FS and clear about what eroding the principles will do to the outcomes.

I run a forest school in Tokyo. Thank you for the affirmation that we're doing things right. Unfortunately, Tokyo is not ready for it YET. We'll get there though!

Thanks for watching! Great to hear that you are getting the children out - yes people (and education systems) will get there in their own time - we can just help guide them a bit! 😀
