I am an ESL teacher and I always watch Ronnie's videos with great pleasure ! Her sense of humour and the way she explains everything are so close to what I usually try to do while working with my students. The key word is I try because Ronnie has so many great ideas for us and she is the best English teacher for me !

When I was a Primary School teacher I taught my children this little rhyme, to help with the above problem. I also taught my son. " When two vowels go " walking" ( they are in the same word) the first one does the talking and says it's own name." I hope this helps. :)

Hi Ronnie, thank you so much for this video. The guideline is pretty helpful and makes sense! I am an English teacher in China who's trying to solve the same problem with teaching pronunciations. The question I have is about longer words - when longer words come into play, we have to deal with stressed and non-stressed vowels, and even the same vowel in stressed syllables can have totally different pronunciations. I wonder how we can categorise that and make the whole reading system more systematic? Anyways, this is a comment from 5 years later haha. But your video definitely helped me a lot. Maybe I should take pronouncing longer words from pronouncing short ones first. (teach - teacher, the "e" is the same sound though the length changes.) Anyways, thank you again!!

I thought the singular (unpaired) vowel being the short vowel version and the paired (with the silent "e" on the end of the sentence) being the long vowel version was common knowledge. I was taught this "rule" in elementary school. What is new to me is that any paired vowel creates a long vowel. Of course, we know there are more than just 10 vowel sounds in English, so this has limited application.
@magzcan26
@magzcan26 Год назад
Yes this has limited application. I think it’s easier to say if you have two vowels together it changes the sound. Sometimes it can make the first vowel a long sound but not always. It would be better to teach vowel pairs. Like ai, ei, ie, ea, ou, oi, oa, oo, ou, ee, etc. That’s how we learned it in school. We also learned the long vowel with the silent e in school. And you have y as a vowel sometimes as well.
@jacejensen2541
@jacejensen2541 Год назад
@@magzcan26 That is an interesting concept looking at specific vowel pairs. I took the first one you mentioned "ai". I, myself, would have thought it would be pronounced the same as "I" and "eye", as it is in words like "Chai" and "Thai". But it is commonly pronounced with an "eɪ" as in "aid", "aim", "rain", "wait", & "tail'. Or it is reduced to "ɛə" before the letter "r" in words like "fair" and "air". However, there are certain outliers such as "mountain", "bargain" and "said" where it is reduced to an even shorter vowel "ɛ" or even "ə". As for the "hail", "pail", "fail" set, I speak a dialect where we have reduced those words to sounding like "hell", "pell", and "fell". The bottom line is that spelling in English is very complicated.
