Then you fucked up big time. He will obviously have a look and cops are familiar with retractable license plates. And most people using these plates aren‘t as innocent as the creator of this vid, they usually use them to run away from the cops. So he‘ll be in big trouble.
Gtm Nayan the cops would just get mad and give a ticket for not properly displaying the front plate thank god I live in ga and they don’t require it 🤔 I could get a bumper for my mustang that doesn’t have the mount and I can have the lights.
I want the JAMES BOND one that has multiple plates both sides and smoke and rocket and machine guns and drink and gamble and have more women then BILL Clinton
Magic Cat I have no idea if it’s illegal here in Utah, because I’ve been driving without one forever Edit: It is illegal, but it’s a secondary offense, so you can only get a ticket when you’re pulled over for something else
They did that in Japan after they put speed cameras all over their favorite highway racing circuit. However, theirs was activated by speed with some springs. It was in the old days.
But where are you going to mount it? most of the time it looks ugly when the plate isnt mounted in it's intended place. I would get plate flipper or hider where a black curtain would come down and cover it
My car has a straight pipe system with a remote controlled varex muffler (look it up), when open it's way too loud to be legal, when closed it's quieter than the factory exhaust. A cop pulled me over once, had the biggest wtf moment of his life.
Half the idiots in this comment section completely missed the point of this device. It's only supposed to be retracted for car shows and other special events where the license plate may ruin the styling of the car. His Subaru, for example, was not designed to have a front plate and as a result, it looks worse with it on. And for the people asking why he'd bring that thing to a car show: You don't need a good looking car to attend a car show. They're not just about looking at cool cars. They're places where fellow car enthusiasts can meet and share their passion for cars. Go to one and you'll see what I mean.
all cars in japan are MANDATORY front plate. Subaru is a japanese company. Just because they didn't put it there, doesn't mean they didn't want you to do it.
Thank you for educating us lol 😂 I’d never know what it was for or why he has it because he doesn’t explain at all in the video . 😂 on top of that I though it was for running through tolls and robbing banks I’m so glad you went into extreme detail exactly word for word what he said on the video lol 😂 your so good at teaching . I’m so so glad you are here to translate English into English. Thank you so so much 😆.
@@TeXasDadBod unwarranted sarcasm. If you read through the comments you will see that most people do need to be told what was in the video. I don't know, maybe lots of people don't pay attention or they don't watch the whole video, or they are just plain stupid.
Here in Germany the license plate is almost 60cm wide (about twice the width of the US-one), and it has to always be on the front, with no folding mechanisms or anything. If you get lucky with the guy at the "offices" you can get a special permit to mount it off to the side or use a special shortened version. If you're caught without a front plate in a very closely defined area your car is pretty much declared not road-legal right on the spot, and you have to either mount the plate properly immediately or get the car towed.
Same in the UK. However we are allowed to display any plate as long as it's visible to a speed camera and has the correct spacing. It is also "required" to have a blue GB with a European star emblem on it, however as of March 2017 this wont be required as the UK has unfortunatley left the EU. We're allowed to re-locate and resize plates however we want, plenty of taxis use the square plates used of Land Rovers so they can have the Taxi ID in a better place on modern cars. See here: upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/6d/2010_Mercedes_S350_Bluetec_taxi_(15780750655).jpg
Dylan 'Robin' Harwood The plate on the taxi you showed is about the size of the special plate you can try to get in germany. It's only handed out if you can prove that your car can't "house" the standard plate (if you import a car from the US, they may even have you swap out the bumper/trunk-lid to fit the normal plate).
Dylan 'Robin' Harwood In Germany when you register a car you can go to "sign-makers" too, but previously you have to register a combination of (partly chosen) numbers and letters. Also, you can have the signs made in any shape and colour you want, but only ones in the correct shape and colour(s) with a register-able text on them "count" officially.
Here in Australia, and heaps of other countries, makes it compulsory for manufacturers to include a front license plate mounts to the car, which they take into consideration when designing the bumper, so looks are not really an issue here.
Every car sold in the has provisions for mounting license plates. Either the front bumper is formed with a plate mount or an optional mount is included.
@@Suubie Rex - I disagree. My Holden Commodore (aka Chevrolet SS) would look like garbage with the front plate bracket installed. The bumper was most definitely not designed for a plate of any kind. That said, when I am able to mount the bracket without resorting to drilling holes thru the bumper face, I'll consider it.
lol tell me about it. they put those out shortly before i got my first car which was white. That sentra would have looked way better with he older white blue plates than these black and yellow/orange shits.
the chile new mexico plates are yellow on black and they are so cool compared to most state plates, let alone you only get one plate so you don't get a front one (go to nm if you want to have a clean car without that braket)
Ahahaha here in europe EVERYONE needs a licence plate and in some parts of europe you need to display what time of emission class the car is, like in Germany
being military I travel a lot and I hate the stupid front plates. So I use where my folks live in SoFlo as residency to get florida plates. I leave my VT Plates to be hung up on the wall now lol. Soon enough I'll just apply for the military plates in every state I go to just cuz they're free and keep a collection of em all haha. I don't know why I never did before.
flex modz Damm guys, in my country they give you a ticket if you have a Motorcycle plate instead of the big one and you guys said you go away with no license plate... you gotta love USA :))
I’m in Dallas , and idk do you put it in your dash so it can be seen through your windshield because I been pulled over twice for that 1 in a Honda prelude and one on a sc300
I'm in Maryland and my impala SS doesn't have a mount and the police pulled me over and I showed him and he said I have a drill set in my trunk I can install it. Me: " I'm good run me the ticket" Still haven't put it on 🤣👏🏽
I live in Texas also and my car did not have a set location for the front plate and I still have to run one, ive gotten pulled over before. I just have it 3m taped on, works great.
*drives around with it in gets pulled over *officer: do you know why I pulled you over today son *me: no officer I don’t actually *officer: you don’t have a front license plate and that is illegal *me: officer I don’t know what you me by I don’t have a front license plate can you check again please **hits button to bring out license and plate**
They would immediately be able to tell that you have a retractable license plate and then probably slap you with even more fines for trying to be a smartass about it.
I'm pretty sure your "solution" is more illegal than your no tag problem. Having the ability to hide your plate might be considered as not properly displaying equipment or conspiracy to commit a crime. (you know how virginia is). I'm not saying this is dumb by any means and understand the jackass law, I live in virginia. I live in a much smaller town that looks for much smaller laws to bust you for, pulled over for ear plugs hanging on rear view mirror. Pulled over to measure height of bumper to the road. Pulled over for 2 inch crack line in windshield (but i see people with the entire side or rear window out and that "clear" plastic over it going past cops all the time). Pulled over because the lens on my rear side marker (near the fender/wheel well) was broke. "if it is on your car it has to work" What crap. Actually failed an inspection because of ear plugs on the rear view mirror. He went as far as putting the sticker on the window, told me why I failed, said I could remove the ear plugs and he would pass me. I went out and pulled them down, he removed the sticker and put on a pass. THEN he charged me the extra dollar for having to inspect it again.
it's only really illegal if you use it to dodge toll gate fees by obscuring your plate to avoid ticket cams. As long as you display it while driving and only hide it as he said during shows it is totally legal. Just dont try to wait till your getting pulled over to pop it out as that will get you a ticket for being a smartass.
I don't know why they take front plates so seriously, I mean it's not like we're protesting, blocking highways, or looting lol. We have rear plates like everyone else lol.
CJ5797 if you drove your car like a car guy should drive his car, you'd know that setting it up in the dash will fail every time. Take a corner at speed, and woah look, suddenly your plate is in the floorboard or your lap
Not necessarily I have put a tag on the dashboard before numerous times I know what I'm talking about and it did not slide at all I stand corrected what I said That's all you do whatever you want with your car I'll do whatever I want mine that's it
I’d only pop it up once I see a cop. Like I roll my 5% windows down when I’m around a cop. I’d assume the cop would understand that your not trying to hide anything.
I was so glad when I moved to a state that doesn't require the front plates. I've asked cops if the front plate makes a difference to them, and they said no. They look at the rear plate 99% of the time.
The biggest thing is if they have a suspect that lets say robs a store, and the security camera only catches the front of the car, they have identification, in states with no front plate they wouldnt have any identification...
Although it's still somehow legal to just throw them up on the dash where it won't be legible in person or on cameras anyways. Seems more like a way to make money off tickets.
My solution was high quality suction cups for the front license plate holder on my wife's 03 Cobra. I didn't want to drill holes in her front bumper to mount the ugly plastic stock front plate holder. I happened to have 4 high quality silicone suction cups that had threaded inserts from some previous project so I used them on the back of the plate holder and it has worked perfectly (haven't lost a plate) for 2 years at 120+ MPH : ) ... It has held on amazingly well even in hard rain, when I'm showing the car I just pop it off (takes a bit of effort to get the suction cups to release) and voila! Clean bumper!
I got a ticket in SoHo, NYC, parked on the street. Not allowed behind glass or plastic, mine was on the dash, clearly visible, $62. Just a plain old Mercedes wagon. So I wrote a whiny letter, "stripped screws, I just registered it that morning" blah blah, and they dismissed it.
Terri Bel Bliss bumpers were first intended to protect the car (they could bump into things and the car is still ok). now we need license plates to protect the bumpers so the bumper doesn't bump into anything, only the plate does.. hahahaha
"I don't want to ruin my bumper by drilling holes in it" Almost every single car comes with two predrilled holes for exactly this one reason: a front plate. It's mandatory in literally every single civilized country. Not to mention, at 2:30 you can see the two holes made for the plate. But obviously it'd be too logical to attach anything there, those holes are probably just for aesthetics.
Some cars do not have holes predrilled. They may have tiny indentations when the manufacturer suggested you drill to put on a license plate holder. That's the case with my brother's Chrysler 300. He doesn't want to ruin the look off his car but he's going to put on a license plate on the front anyway. Then again, he's not going to take his car to car shows.
I run a tow hook license plate bracket, and since I always have a tool kit in my trunk, I just unscrew the bolt itself with an adjustable wrench and pop on the tow cover whenever I’m doing a photo shoot or at a meet. Takes 1 minute, cost me ~25 bucks. 2008 Benz C63 Amg.
I didnt even know there are countries or states that don't require front license plates. In germany, no car is sold without a holder for a license plate on both front and rear
In the Netherlands and in many other EU countries its illegal to not have front or rear plates. You always need both on. They are bigger and often European cars are designed to have space for them. Also its illegal if the plate isn't readable up to a distance of 200 meters. The rear license plate must have working licence plate lights if that is factory default on your car. Any modification of the licenseplate is illegal. Including license plates that can hide or flip down. Its not illegal to put a cover over the license plate as long as it stays readable up to 200 meters. You can't fool camera's. However it is legal to shine very bright IR on the plate. It *may* obtruce the speed cameras. It is legal cuz its readable up to 200 meters.
Having lived in Maryland I understand totally the situation. First with my 77 Trans Am. I had the car repainted and the body shop didn't re install the front plate. I got stopped literally feet from the body shop. Then when I bought my first Corvette it didn't have a front plate on the car. I drove for quite a while before I was stopped doing over 80 on the Baltimore beltway. The trooper gave me a warning for the speed and a citation for not having the front plate. He asked me if I didn't have one cause I thought it spoiled the looks of the car. I also had to help my son install a front plate on his 98 Trans Am after he moved to Virgina from our house in Pennsylvania which doesn't require a front plate. Most car enthusiast don't want the front plate. Police departments and the state which charges more for two tags want them. I say let the voters decide by putting it on a referendum.
Cool but personally as someone who's anal about their paint I wouldn't cause it could possibly scratch. Maybe not a clear noticable one. But micro scratch which is noticable when the sun shines
EnKay Moto it hasn't fallen off, I worried about that too so I had zip ties attaching it to me grill for the first week just in case. But the magnets hold very well
you can't put it inside the car and in front of windsheld? I got pulled over once and I put my license in front of windsheld, no officer pull me over again.
Youd be surprised how badly loose items hurt in a crash, and how far they can travel.... also if your car isnt slow the torque can send it flying into your passengers face
Here in Australia you can get different sizes of license plates to suit your vehicle. You can also get them in different colours to suit your vehicle even more.
The only reason in England you'd not want a front number plate, is if you had a massive intercooler behind the bumper. Instead of the video method, which only works in places you are legally allowed to drive on the road without one. It still potentially blocks the air to the intercooler so....redirect.viglink.com/?format=go&jsonp=vglnk_154664457462116&key=c00b16f9b8ea0aebcf155638e86db91d&libId=jqio8bso0100kp46000MAc91d8u48&loc=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.focusstoc.com%2Fforums%2Ftopic%2F158050-number-plates%2F&v=1&out=http%3A%2F%2Fs1108.photobucket.com%2Fuser%2FCJW07aab%2Fmedia%2FIMG_20130712_185239_zpsbc9c204a.jpg.html&ref=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com%2F&title=number%20plates%20-%20Focus%20ST%20Mk2%20Discussion%20-%20Focus%20ST%20Owners%20Club&txt= Paint it on
I worked at California Toyota Design, and when a designer he asked me about his design, I told him he needed to design a place for the front license plate. That the front bumper look would be ruined if just tacked on. Told him to do something like a 1992 Corvette. It has a removable panel the says Corvette that follows the bumper lines; those states that require front plates simply remove the panel for a well designed mounting location. The designer said he really never thought about that, and agreed with me. The caveat is he also said "It'd be too hard." Sadly, Corvette ended that after the 2005 model year.
@@Poopsticle_256 not true, CA does require it, back in my day with a slammed lowered car I got about 10 tickets for it, but then again I was asking for it. I still don't run a front plate but haven't been bothered about it but my car is no longer slammed and bouncing all over the street with a loud exhuast, but where they do enforce it is at LAX.
Here in NYC because of all the crazy tolls, you have a lot of people using these and also the plate "flippers" that allow 2 plates to flipped like james bond. However, they made them completely illegal and it's a criminal charge of tampering with a plate as opposed to a violation of not having the plate at all.
Law just states it must be display on the front of the vehicle.. any ways you spend 50k on a new car you really want to drill holes in a brand new car? That law is bs when's the last time I cop pulled up in front of you to run your plate and pull you over. It just doesn't happen
Matthew Gailey I don't really mind having front license plates but, when I wanna do crazy stuff at night people have something called a phone and they can record you and report you,
He has a nice car with a prestine bumper, to install a front license plate would mean drilling 4 holes in it and mounting an ugly piece of metal to his bumper.
You guys are lucky. In Germany this would be considered license/document fraud and is a felony that can result in the confiscation of your vehicle. The underlying assumption of the state is that you installed this to avoid getting caught by automated speed traps by hiding the plate. It's equally fraudulent to cover the plate, either completely or by reflecting transparent foil. And honestly the authorities have a point here.
In most states the fine for an articulating or non-rigid license plate mount can be FAR more severe. They are intended to discourage organized criminals and bank robbers and the like from considering it, so you are likely playing with fire here.
1- i agree in va there should not be a requirement for a front tag. however - many speculate the reason for the front tag is to make a flat metal reflector their radar bounces off of and immediately back to their receptor. i know for a fact radar will grab a large ( flat surface ) tractor/trailer BEFORE it senses my vehicle - test confirmed. you could STILL get gigged on the technicality of attachment because the tag is not firmly attached " to the vehicle " as va code is very specific.
Finally! A solution to a problem that doesn’t really exist. I never understood the big deal about front tags, if there’s no bracket just use double sided tape! Instead you spent hundreds of dollars on a pointless accessory because you obsess about something as trivial as a license plate.
People make the argument of looking ugly, which for my eclipse would definitely do that, but there’s no way I can mount it on my bumper and have it look practical. Only practical spot would be in the grill slot, but that would reduce air intake and damage my car. Just gotta suck it up or buy an expensive mount that doesn’t drill into the front of your bumper
I'm from Ohio and I see tons and tons of people without front plates when it's required. It makes me wonder how they all get away with it. Maybe there's just so many the cops don't care?
Utah is the same way. They even changed the law day you can't get pulled over for it. You have to get pulled over for something else first, then they can ticket you.
You took your Subaru to car shows and wondered why you weren't winning. Then a retractable license plate changed everything. I was going to tell a dumb story, but I could never top that.
1. Its illegal to drive without front license plate in somewhere at Asia too 2. Srsly put the plate at the center so there is balance of the airflow, and also symmetry so the car looks same at both sides 3. Is that a Subaru Impreza??
Drew Thompson Wait till you have a cool car. As a Michigan driver who doesn't need them, believe me when I say they look stupid. Buck toothed. You are used to looking at them.
The law is the same in British Columbia where I grew up but when I moved to Quebec, it was so weird to see everyone not having a front license plate. There's really no reason for them.
I have had mine under my wind shield because my shitty bumper couldn't hold it without falling off every damn highspeed bump. No complaints. Well alot but i asked them to read my plate and they all could then said i shouldn't be a smart ass and gave me a warning.
Not sure about Virginia in the US but in Australia these devices are illegal. Front and rear plates have to be on fixed locations. They cannot be mounted on movable devices. (Thank god for low profile plates) I'd suggest checking the fine print on the laws BEFORE you install one of these.
Gets lit up by cop for not displaying front license plate. Before coming to a full stop, he pushes the button to reveal the plate: -Hello sir, do you know why I’ve stopped you today? -Absolutely no ideea... -Well, your front license plate is missing. -Uhm, that’s not true. Could you check again? *heckin bamboozled dem cops*
In washington state, we have the same law with one exception- If your car did not come from the factory with a designated area for a front plate, you are exempt.
Mike D except all manufacturers design their cars for front license plates. But it is the dealerships job the screw in the holes. Cause I live in Arizona, and you can tell if it's from Arizona or not. We don't have holes on our bumpers.
MCD0И4LD TЯUMP3T I bought my last car in Phoenix, with no front plate. When i moved to washington, i looked up the state patrol website. It said, if it did not come from the dealer with a front plate, you dont have to have one. Since Washington is a police state, i installed one anyway to avoid being pulled over every day.
So wait you said you dont know if the plate is out when driving? Yet your outside with remote and is able to press the button. Im wondering do you need to start the car in order to display it?
Reading all the responses below I have to wonder how many of you get tickets because you are young or drive foolishly or because you do dumb things top your car( such as lowering , spoilers etc..) I'm "old" by most standards. My family has 4, soon to be 5 cars. Only 1 has a front plate. I have an F150, SMART car, and two Celica's. Only my 2003 Celica GTS has a front plate and that's because the bumper came with it. We also have tinted windows (fronts 60, rear and trunks 80%) on all the vehicles. Neither I or my wife have never been pulled over for either a front plate or tinted windows. I got pulled over once for an expired plate (by about 2 months) and I told the officer the truth (I forgot) and he let me go with a warning for the expired tags and not a word about the front plate or tinting. I don't speed, I obey traffic laws and I don't do stupid things to my car to bring anymore attention to myself. I think HOW you behave and how you present yourself and your car have a huge impact. Think about it. My new car (being shipped from TN, will also not have a front plate, as the bumper cover never had one installed just like my other cars. Still, to the point of this video, if it ever becomes an issue this folding plate is nice, but unless your showing your car at shows would be a total waste. You would need to have the plate showing anyways during 90% of your driving. For less money, I would rather buy a "drill-less" plate holder and just have the peace of mind knowing my bumper and paint are not damaged.
In Montana we have to have the front plate also, but if your vehicle doesn’t have the bracket on the front we just put them in the front windshield so it is visible and it’s acceptable
Same rule in California. Fortunately, my best friend is a cop. Whenever I get a ticket he just signs off that it's been corrected and it costs me only $10 a pop.
"Takes away from the designers intentions of front bumper" Euro cars are designed specifically to accommodate them, because front plates are a legal requirement. But sure, you do you
I thought those didn't have proper fitment with the US spec Legacies. Did you have to do anything special to make it fit? If not, I think it's high time I ordered one.
I got pulled over in Appomattox, AT NIGHT, for one of two lights illuminating the rear plate being burned out. The cop was “ you should have more knowledge of your vehicle condition”. How am I supposed to know? I’m in the car, not behind it
And in Quebec, there is no front license plate. It looks so scary to me that the cars have no front license plates. It looks confusing as hell when all of sudden someone from Dortmund is showing up and his rear plate says: "Quebec - Je me souviens". Some people put in foreign license plates in front.
VA is so stupid with its laws I wouldn't be surprised if this was illegal too. lol But its a very cool solution. Great work Ben. Congrats to the channel for 10,000 SUBSSS!!!!
You Could Put A Camera On Your Front & Rear Plate So You'd Be Able To Know When The Front Is Out Then You Could Use The Recordings To Be Able To Fight Tickets In Court So You Could Say If The Traffic Stop Was Justified
