I bought the Beavercraft spoon carving kit here in Australia. It comes with a Sloyd knife, a short blade carving knife, (not a chip carving knife), a hook knife and a U shaped gouge. It comes in the tool roll with a leather strop and green compound. I have been using it for the last couple of months and it exceeded my expectations. Sharp straight out of the box and easy to maintain. Well worth the money. I also purchased the special curved strop for the hook knife and gouge. Very easy to use and takes away the stress of maintaining curved blades when you are not very good at sharpening like me.

Thank you so much for this! I have never carved a wooden piece in my life (except, maybe, a stick for roasting marshmallows LOL!) but I very much want to learn. On the basis of reviews on Amazon I just purchased the Beaver Craft set, and then found this video when I searched RU-vid for more guidance on using them. I am totally charmed by your skills, and the beauty of the spoon you carved using these tools. I greatly appreciate your assessments of both the tools themselves, as well as the company that produced them. Thank you so much for the information and the inspiration. Great review! For Christmas I received the BeaverCraft kit for whittling/carving (my use will mainly be folk art caricatures). They have been awesome thus far. Out of the three knives my go to has been the 2” roughing knife. It hones very nicely, too. I particularly appreciate your insight into the hook knife as I intend to try my hand at carving a spoon in the near future.

I just got the kit today (Amazon Prime is amazing, it’s a holiday here), should I be concerned or relieved that it came with bandaids? 😂
@tbrew8222
@tbrew8222 3 года назад
I noticed that the better woodcarving knives nearly all come with at least a few bandages. I recall getting a kit with changable blades and a few handles, and it came with more than one full size (at least 100 ea.) box of bandaids and a roll of gauze! Some people wear a cut resistant glove on their non-dominant hand to reduce the band aid consumption.. but properly kept, these things can slice you right open just bumping into it on the table or dropping it a few inches. I have a cover/ cork or sheath for anything that is going to be on an open table or somewhere it could be knocked down or touched accidentally by others. Even some of the lighter ones can still go right through many shoes or pants just falling off a table. I never used all the bandaids, but with enough use, it makes as much sense as including a strop and compounds.

I've been whittling a bit during this pandemic. I started a spoon with some firewood and my pocket knives, but carving the bowl was an issue. Eventually I bought a beavercraft kit. I have made two spoons within weeks from scrap apple wood branches. Now I need to properly sharpen the knives to continue converting my small pile of branches into spoons, and save my fingers from forcing cuts.

Just watched your video, first of yours I've seen and first review I've watched. Great review. I'm inspired to start spoon carving (been meaning to get into for a while), though unfortunately I'm quite late. That dame set isn't sold on their site anymore and the closest they do have has different shaped handles and the curved knife looks like a slightly different shape. Maybe another review is due? 😊 I'd love to be able to buy a beginner spoon carving set with the confidence that it has your seal of approval.

Bought the set on amazon. The handles are not as nicely finished as yours were in the video. They smell of regular industrial hard oils, the whole package had an unpleasant reek to it. Also of the three tools only the Sloyd could be called sharp. The hook knife as absolutely blunt and I couldn't even cut through paper, no matter how hard I tried. Really a let down. :( EDIT: Had contact with the seller. Great communication. Very friendly and helpful. Immediately sent a replacement and a little excuse gift on top. The replacements were all properly sharp. Overall then: very good customer service, slight tiny problem with quality assurance, but seems to be a great company who care about their customers.

I couldn't agree more with your review. Several weeks ago I bought the Beavercraft Sloyd out of curiosity. It is all you say it is. Yes, it is a bit thinner than the Mora 106. Then, as you say, the curve has more sweep. It is ideal for slicing. I may be wrong, but I also think the bevel of the scandi grind is at a lower degree than the Mora 106. Each of these factors, in my opinion, make it a more aggressive cutter. My only real question was how would it hold an edge. It seems to be doing fine, though I am carving green cherry for the most part. Mine came with a different handle (I didn't buy the kit version) and a leather sheath. The handle was too thin for my hand, so for a quick fix I added narrow leather slabs to the sides to build them out and then wrapped the whole handle in sinew. Now that I've done it I think I'll keep it like it is. I'm enjoying the sinew grip and new shape. Let me say too that I own dozens of sloyd and other carving knives, including hand forged custom knives with various grinds and steels. I am very impressed with how this $14 dollar knife holds up. I'll be buying several more, perhaps even the hook knife as well. Thanks for highlighting these tools. I hope others with your level of skill and reputation will give them their due.

Thank you for reviewing these tools, I have been carving for just a couple of years with only a Mora spoon knife and 120. But received a Beavercraft just like the one in this video as a gift. I’ve been using it since Christmas and have been impressed but see very little on the net about them. As you say they are very solid beginner blades. Is there a rationale to applying the compound to the hair/top side of the leather rather than the flesh side? I've always seen strops (including ones for straight razors) using the flesh side, presumably in part because it holds the compound better. But maybe the top side compresses less? Interested to know your thoughts since you're a leather worker as well.
@woodsmansfinest3814
@woodsmansfinest3814 5 лет назад
You got that perfectly right. The hair side still takes the compound of a decent quality rather well but it is way denser and doesn't convex your knife as easily. Great observation! Cheers

Thank you. I've been thinking about making more videos about my dive watches. This one I actually made a video about a while ago. It is a Citizen Eco drive Promaster Diver that isn't built anymore. But their newer version is great and quite affordable. I think I put it into my amazing shop below.

I'm afraid I'm going to be a minority opinion on this topic. I own a leather shop and I also teach a lot of spoon carving classes. Most of the tools I've purchased to be used by my students have been Moras, but I do have a few Beavercraft, which I bought because they cost less than Mora. I've found I don't care for the Beavercraft tools. Part of the problem is the shape of the handles. I don't find them comfortable during use. Most of my students who have tried both the Moras and the Beavercrafts tend to agree. Given a choice, my students almost always choose the Mora tools and leave the Beavercraft tools in the tool box. The one exception to my dislike of these tools is the Beavercraft 12-inch hook knife. I use that tool a lot for bowl carving. The longer handle gives me the leverage I need to take good cuts deep down inside a bowl or kuksa. In my mind, the main advantage of Beavercraft tools is their low price. They allow new spoon carvers to get into the craft without spending a lot of money, which is a good thing. I believe, though, most people will upgrade to better tools as their skill levels progress.
@woodsmansfinest3814

That's exactely what i was saying... You get a set for the price of one Mora... Not everyone out there can afford 80 or 90 dollars to try out a hobby. Totally needless to say that Moras are better. I think I am a very strong advocate on my channel for highend tools. But that isn't what we are Talking about... We are Talking about a 45 dollars set that comes in a tool roll, with a leather strop and will teach you sharpening etc if you don't have the money to spend. That's all. We all know the handles aren't ideal etc. That's why I say in the video, they are what they are not more but also not less.

Not to offend anyone especially not the video creator, but what thus video says to me is there's no point in spending a lot of money of these knives from expensive knife makers. I've looked at tons of websites where the hook knife alone costs as much as the beaver craft entire carving set which comes with a carrying roll, a strop and compound. I'm already pretty good at sharpening and modifying bevels as well from practicing on my bushcraft knives. So I guess my question is, again not trying to offend, what is the point of paying hundreds of dollars on one or 2 knives when I can get this entire beaver craft set for the price of one knife?
@woodsmansfinest3814
@woodsmansfinest3814 Год назад
I'm a custom knife maker and designer myself. These knives are in design, blade steel and overall quality not even in the same universe as high end carving knives. This is a starter set for people on a budget. Nothing more.
@atomicpsych0

@Woodsmans Finest I understand things can be made of better materials and with hand made quality, but after watching this video of you making a nice spoon with this set, how much better do the knives need to be and why?
@woodsmansfinest3814
@woodsmansfinest3814 Год назад
@@atomicpsych0 well... If you ask that question, you aren't there yet. If you don't wanna spend money on higher quality, don't. As simple as that.

@woodsmansfinest3814 Год назад
@@atomicpsych0 don't get me wrong... You got a real question but if you aren't open for the answer, what's the point. So, in other words, more expensive tools are that much better and were made by a human. If that doesn't have value to you, they aren't for you and you aren't my customer. Pretty simple. I can carve with those tools because I did this full time for a decade. Better tools will support the learning curve. Cheap tools are still useable but won't get you to your potential. They will fail in tough woods. They won't take as fine of an edge because of the heat treat cycles. They won't be as comfy to use and as efficient. Like I said, they aren't as good. Until you have not tried a finely made and tuned high end tool, you won't know.
@atomicpsych0
@atomicpsych0 Год назад
@Woodsmans Finest as I said in my first comment, my intention wasn't to offend. I've looked at your tools and they look outstanding. I especially like your axes. I didn't think my post made me seem closed minded to the answer of the question I asked but if it seemed that way I apologize. I was simply looking for a deeper insight to your video. I already own this beavercraft set and have made a couple spoons. The last of which came out very nice. I'm particularly interested in a better hook knife as it seems to be the hardest part of making the spoon to me. But I have watched several videos that go back and forth about something like beaver craft as opposed to high end. I don't make spoons for a living, just as a hobby while I'm in the field doing training. After watching this and some of your other videos it's much easier for me to justify buying your lightweight wayfaring axe over some of the hook or sloyd knives. I'd like to have it all but financially it's not practical

This is just a commercial. Beaver craft are certainly not ethically produced. They’ve copied other designs and sell them for knock-down prices as no R&D investment. Any experienced spoon carver will tell you how bad the hook knife is & mora have got rid of the stabbing point on hook knife now as realise it is a bad idea.
