My Sportster Chopper Build

This chopper was made from a stock 1990 sportster that was in need of new engine cases. I figured that the while the motor and transmission was torn apart that it would be a perfect time to make a chopper project from it.

Don't put yourself down son. You've done more than 20 years and most Harley Riders doing 50. I've been doing this since 1968 building choppers. And some of my buddies still have me work on their bike and they've been riding for 50 years. That's okay everybody can't be a mechanic everybody can't be a fabricator. The thing is getting someplace with something you built under your ass. Keep up the good work son you're doing fine I respect you.

Evo Sportsters are bulletproof motors. I’ve got a 2003 that I’ve been trying to kill for 15 years and she just won’t quit! Not as smooth as my Twin Cam Softail but a whole hell of a lot more reliable. Nice build, good ingenuity, and thumbs up for doing it your way.

Man I love this bike! It's so much cooler that you improvised and made parts rather than just buying kits or premade overpriced stuff. To me, this is exactly what makes a choppers awesome. Makes me want to go out in the garage and start chopping stuff off my bike! Great job and thanks for posting the video.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I have never "built" a bike, chopper, bobber, or anything with two wheels, I have overhauled a few engines and transmissions, have been a mechanic for the last 38 years. It is easy to say "well, I would have done XYZ." You have surpassed the "I would have done this" crowd, you did do it. Keep on plugging, I have modified a few things and most of them I wound up redoing because I figured out a better way to do it later. Make it your own and screw everyone else's opinion on how it looks.

You built a bike using your hands, your skills, and your own problem solving. That makes it awesome and props to you for making it happen. Evo sporty is a great choice. Reliable, durable, easy to work on. And good sound, too, eh? I've had my Evo sporty going on 14 years and 80,000+ miles for all those reasons, and she's still going strong. I admire your work ethic, and the ability to form a vision of what you want, and then STICK TO IT. You got mad skills for making videos, too. Very enjoyable to watch. Keep up the good work!

I still have the bike and in the process of totally rebuilding it now. It is truly my style. I dig the heck out of your sporty sets a little high for my taste though. But my opinion does jot matter lol you are the one riding it. You put it together yourself using what you had and know and that my friend is awesome and more than most can say.

I love the video. As soon as you described the relocation for the coil and how you wanted to make your own, I knew we were cut from the same cloth. I made a tank lift kit for my bike for free and saved 50 bucks. I hope to start welding soon because with that and fiber glass it opens up a whole new can of worms. You asked what I think you could have changed.... well Idk what weather is like for you but I'd put some kind of rain shielding on that battery of yours. Other than that she looks like a great bike.
@mattfstephens
@mattfstephens 5 лет назад
For one- I love the video. 2- I love your humility and your attention to what really matters. Keeping those bars in line with the forks is aesthetically genius.😁 Very pleasing to the eye. Your sissy bar is almost at the same angle, bonus! The battery box is ideal. I like seeing room around it and it's extremely practical if you're trying to problem-solve on the road. Go with your gut. Your heart is definitely in the right place. More power to ya!

I've put myself in a pickle by buying my adopted Dad's chopper after his passing, just to let you know, I was not adopted, I adopted him and his wife, when I first met him(Sam), he showed me his chopper and I loved the whole look and then he started it up and I was standing behind the exhaust pipes, it was like feeling your child heart beat for the first time, he was old school for sure, he had a 49 ford in the garage he pull out from time to time and start it up, later on he bought a 54 ford that I got to help him work on, believe me it took a long time for him to trust to work on anything, he had so many say they could do this and that, but never could, so when I came around, slowly he would see I would not let him down and towards the end he would tell me something needed fixing and would trust me to fix it, even though he would say, "well we'll see how long it last", to keep me humble, shortly before he stopped riding, he changed the oil on the chopper and took it out for a ride when he felt something warm and wet on his leg, it was oil, I still don't know how it really happened but he had a friend rebuild the engine after we took it out, then he start stripping down the chopper, the chopper sat like this, the fame and springfork and handle bar on both wheels everything else was laying down in his man cave, that's when he started getting worse and when the engine was ready we were supposed to start putting it together but sadly it never happened before he passed, 3 months ago, I was surprised that his real son was not asking for it, although he wanted his only son in law to have one of his motorcycle, he chose the Harley Softail and the chopper was going to be sold, when i heard my adopted Mom say she would let it go as is, for 4,000, that when I asked her to sell it to me in payments, there is a story, a history, about this chopper that he told me about, it first was a frame and sat in the living and as holidays would come the fame was decorated too, as he would vision the final build, I could not let it go down into losing the history and story and dream he shared with me about the chopper, the pickle I put myself in is, I'm not a rider, not yet, and not before putting it back together, I didn't think before if i could put it back together, but after finding all the parts that go to the chopper, my confidence is almost not there, I will do it, but smart enough to ask the advise of someone who's done it, any advise you have for me, I will build it and ride it, that for sure and plan on naming after him, Sammy Boy, he told me once" that ride is like no other bike he has ever rode before, I want to feel that ride he was talking about.

great build. this is what a custom bike build truly is. nothing fancy or flashy. something that comes from the mind, heart and soul of the owner/rider/builder. i have a 96 sporty that im going to build slowly while riding at same time, so its going to get done in pieces. hopefully i can get mine to come out just as rugged and beautiful(in my mind, screw others thoughts about it). hopefully i get a chance to film also, and if i do, i'd be glad for you to take a look also. once again, very great build. dont let this be the only one, gotta do another some time down the road.

Love your videos I've been singing David Allan coe I have a Harley someday My whole life to be honest bad choices and decisions cut me from that dream. Just got my first it's a 1200 custom belt chopper built by a 20 year vet and a man admire I go to him when I need sound advice from someone who has done things right. That chopper is a whole different world than what I'm used to she's built for speed but I agree with you I have a gorgeous bike and I'm going to take my time with it and enjoy it. It's going to take some getting used to but she's mine now finally and that wind therapy Will be a little less comfortable than a full dresser That's the freedom of the ride that spiritual to me. And I can finally quit singing as much as I like David Allan coe that damn song. Many blessings to you and much. respect
