One day I will have a "nice" banjo. The one I have may not be much, but I really feel something when I play it and that's all that I care about.

That's an amazing story Jim! So cool that you got that nice banjo so long ago, and had it all these years. And the part about the guy letting you take the banjo with just a deposit and a promise brings back fond memories of my own, and those times when an honest face and a handshake was good enough.

Hey Jim, great story on your Stelling; that's the first one I've seen without "Stelling" inlaid in the peghead! In 1986 travelled from Australia to Jamestown TN for a festival there and met Clyde Blaylock there ... I'd left my capo back in Melbourne and he took pity on me and very generously gave me a capo which I have and use to this day. Clyde introduced me to Sonny Osborne at breakfast under the awning of his RV ... great memories for me.

My 13 year old son said this is his dream banjo! So cool to have one of Ralph Stanley's banjos! My son's main banjo is a 1934 Gibson Mastertone that my dad bought in 1964 and gave it to Jakob the other year when he saw how well he played it. His other one is a 1928 Gibson that was given to him by our good friend and his late guitar teacher's family after he passed away recently. Both are very special to him, but one day, he said he's going to save his money and buy this one! :)

The fancy-walnut Stelling models are the most thrilling and gorgeous-sounding banjos I've ever heard. Your walnut Stelling Masters Cross is amazing, and it appears Mr. Stelling is playing a walnut Stelling Masters cross or a version of one. What soulful playing and wonderful storytelling. I'm the blissful owner of a walnut Stelling Master Flower, and it is my banjo dream come true . . .

I can see you really love your Stelling, Jim. I have realized that having a good quality starter (entry level) banjo is very important in getting one started bcos it motivates and drives one to play it more and more. Playing by watching and listening to Jim, MH, BBC, WN, JK, JAMM. It's been a year now since I started on this Asthon Banjo. Had to always re-tune it drg my lessons. Counting down the months to my retirement to own a Deering Goodtime.

Hi Jim. In 1984 I was at Stelling´s shop in San Diego and picked up two banjos. One for me and one for a friend. It was one Sunflower and one Bellflower. I had a few friends with me from my job, Swedish airline, who don't played any instrument, and they helped me to carry one banjo through the custom line back I Sweden and was hoping the custom staff don't have them to prove we where banjo pickers. I still have mine Bellflower and some years later I met Geoff in Sweden at a Bluegrass festival. I heard Geoff don't do any more banjos so I guess my great grand children can sell the Sunflower to some collector year 2084 for a price like a pre war Gibson.😁

Thanks for sharing, I know I’ve asked about your Stelling a time or two on the live Q&As. I have a 1999 Bellflower that had been sat in a closet for 10 years after the owner passed away. There’s just something about their tone and volume I love, and the story behind Geoff and his business too. Just about the only drawback I can think of is how heavy they are. 😆

Regrettably my health took a “wrong turn” about a year ago and I haven’t been able to spend much time picking. Cool Video Jim. I have always felt that Stelling Banjos where top notch. Their patent taper fit of the tone ring to the shell was in my opinion the greatest innovation since Scruggs 3 finger style. I had the privilege of visiting the Stelling shop in the late 70s when they where located in Spring Vally, CA.

That's a sweet Stelling! I had a Navy buddy I hadn't seen in 20 years. He called me up and asked if I still had my Mastertone. He said I needed a Stelling and said he would find me one. I told him I couldn't afford another banjo. Weeks later, a banjo showed up on my doorstep as a GIFT! It was a Stelling Master Flower once owned by Bill Emerson!

When I was little around 5 er 7 years old the year woulda been around 1966 67 maybe I had already had a banjo a couple years , it was but a toy banjo but it played ...made the awfullest noise you ever heard . All the family would run me out and they would say that’s the most annoying thing ever . It was a tough banjo. By any standards really . I take it everywhere I went . Maw maws on Sunday after church , or my other maw maws and paw paws . I’d accidentally leave it sometimes and it would be a long week before we go visit again . I’d drag it down to my friends house stopping here and there picking blackberries. Shoot I even left it in the rain in the back yard . That summer of 67 in Alabama it was a scorcher ..... hotter than blue blazes ..it was hot. I remember it was so hot , nothing was stirring . All the dogs done wallered a hole in the dirt under the front porch lay down in em and ah the cool cool dirt . No kids was out playing, the air was still and not even the slightest of a breeze . On any other day the weeping willow tree in our backyard was constantly moving , at least some part would be moving from a faint breeze the you couldn’t feel but you knowed it was there because the long sweeps of willow moved to let you know . Not this day Momma was in the house in the living room rocking my little sister asleep . Brother was in the bedroom asleep and she was sittin in that old rocker right in front of the window box fan tryna get baby to sleep .Course now I was meddling frustrated , bored , old banjo laying out on the front porch , hot , no one to play with and gettin hollered at constantly. I was in the kitchen and crash ... I’d done messed up and the hard pots and pans er metal pots and pans toppled over and it was loud and I knew it . Trouble again . So baby cryin , momma holler at me , spanks me , and quicker flash I was cast into the bedroom and not say one more word young man or else . Tick toc tic toc tic toc .... impatience was on me and I opened the door roamed around inside the house for about an hour , Then here it comes .Momma surprised me and hollers at me WHAT DID I TELL YOU . Standing right over top of me She said Nicodemus ( nicodemus a early on in life nick name my uncle Buster coined me to)NICODEMUS! Stop making all that racket ...and stop makin that horrible noise scratching the walls with your fingernails and all up and down the halls .STOP ALL THAT SCRATCHING ALL THE WINDOW PANE GLASS that shrieking noise and all this . It’s very annoying and I can’t tolerate it today !! ! And mother was holding the front porch screen door open NOW GET OUTSIDE and go play and find something productive to do. So i went out to the front porch and found something else that made just as annoying noise to do 😂😂

I too found the instrument of my dreams at Blaylock Music. Clyde brought Martin into the store for a showcase. The rep brought an HD28 VR to play for the show. A fantastic banjo, Jim! I am retiring on my 66th birthday this Saturday and have promised myself a retirement present of a banjo. I live in England, so our choices are more limited for quality resonator banjos, but I'll try to buy something decent to go with my Martin D28. I've spent 50 years ruining good bluegrass tunes on guitar, so it's time I did so on the banjo. Thanks for being such an interesting and informative teacher. Your videos are always such a pleasure.

Clyde was a very generous man!! Clyde taught me to play banjo when I was in high school. I had a $100 banjo I bought from Clyde and when I got to where I could outplay my banjo Clyde broke out a catalog and we picked a better banjo “Morgan Monroe cascade” . I told him when I saved up enough I would have him order it.. maybe two weeks later I showed up for my lesson and he gave me my banjo and told me to pay what I could when I could. He was the best!!

Great story! Out of curiosity, since we didn’t have RU-vid and the great Jim Pankey in the early eighties, how did you learn to play - private lessons, a mentor, self taught?

I'm self taught. Spent a lot of time playing Flat & Scruggs albums trying to decipher what Earl was doing.
