Good on Ya! I'm a 67 year old guy who always dreamed of owning a dirtbike but life always in the way. I was diagnosed to years ago with terminal cancer. I've always been in good shape so my body and the doctors have done a great job of delaying the inevitable. But I just feel like this is my last summer to I spent the money and got a dirtbike. I won't be doing hard enduro or ripping thru tight mountain single tracks but I AM riding my beloved Montana mountain trails...slowly, gawking at the scenery, flora and fauna and marveling once more at the majesty of what God created here. I can think of no better way to sign off than that :)

May God bless you. I grew up in Montana, it is great terrain for a good bike. Enjoy your journey while you can, we are all terminal, you just got a heads up warning. Tell Jesus we love him when you see him. I won't say be safe, have fun instead.

Totally understand, My life changing moment was losing my partner to Cancer. I always rode enduros but after that I went and bought an ADV bike to take my mind off it, it's been a life saver and has made me get out and explore and re map life. I like to think she's with me on every ride.

Hi Vanessa, I just wanted to say what an inspirational person you are. I too had a life changing accident and many subsequent surgeries not all of which were successful, the last one ended my career. And like you I too have good and bad days, but it does make you appreciate the simple pleasures in life. Keep up the awesome content, and thank you for your positivity. Atb, Ben. 🙂

This last year I got into ADV. I broke 3 ribs, an ankle (badly), and replaced my hip. They told me I’d not ride for 6-9 months and never off-road. I ‘redirected’ the medical team to my goals and was riding again at 6 weeks, and doing a Brett Tkacs off-road course on my GSA 6 months later after working the PT hard, and I’m a lazy bastard. Bikes are wonderful and can get you going. I admire you and your attitude. Respect.

It is obvious you are a cute badass, and only the hardest of hardships we encounter towards the end of our journey, so this seems to be yours. There is not much to say other than to send hugs, loves, and wishes that you have no more major incidents...and don't grind your leg off like my uncle did in the 1970s as the bike slid with his leg trapped under it. Mad bastard is still doing 5000km rides in his mid 70s now - so there is hope for you. Take care. Hugs and love once again.

@@TheGirlOnABike as one gets better at mosquito slaying (a result of too much time and not much to do...) one tends to reflect about life and come to terms with what's important and what's not. That said, motorcycling is expensive haha so some money is very very welcome. But yea this covid situation helped with much needed resets. Had a severe accident as well, hit by a car who started shooting pool on the road and knocked me and my bike on a tree with 80k. 20 surgeries, many white walls, 5 years wheelchair and almost 13 years later now, I decided to get back into the saddle again. Because I love it so much and it focusses me. I still have titanium in my legs and an implant instead of a right elbow so I have to go for zero mistakes although the accident was not me to blame. What I have learned (beside avoiding it!) is that when it comes down to it, you are really on you're own. Although I had a lot of luck and felt blessed considering the medical help and professionals I met. Second I became a more advanced yogi. Physically to deal with my daily pain and spiritually it shows me the path to enlightenment. In other words being a good person who pays forward (without ego) is what we have to be in all circumstances. And 'what doesn't kill you makes you stronger' doesn't count for everyone. I still cope with the pain and fatigues and a lot of times feel broken compared to my former life. But I came this far I can ride a bike again without too much feedback in the week after. It will be the Ténéré 700 (how I got to your channel) because it is awesome but also fits me best and gives me a feeling of taken care of. Cheers!

Lovely video. I wondered if you had a brain injury also because of how you talk. A friend suffered a brain injury in a diving incident and she speaks slowly as a result. But near the end of your story without mentioning anything about your speech pattern I thought to check the video playback speed and sure enough it was set at .75%. Oops, my bad! Rather funny once I realized you didn't have a brain injury to add to the other physical injuries. Very inspirational video!

Can so relate to your vid. Similar thing happened to me, pushbike accident, but I was going up a quarter pipe on a kids bmx. Haha many years of operations later. Changed my life battling through the pain. I've had amazing cars and every motorcycle you would dream of. Now I'm the biggest unplanned, enjoy life to the full traveller. And to make it different just bought a very small bike to continue massive travel slowly. Every day matters. Your the kind of person people need in their lives. Good on ya. Lifes Amazing. Ps loved the iceland vid. First opportunity I'm heading there. Anyway keep cool V.

Mrs. Vanessa 👍🏻👍🏻. New sub here. Really enjoy your channel and admire your courage and optimistic spirit. At first glance you reminded me of Bonnie Tyler(a total eclipse of the heart singer) and that’s a compliment! Anyway I’m really considering the Himalayan as a first bike, never ridden before aside from 4-wheelers and scooters. My application would be back roads and light trails. Would you recommend the himi for a brand new rider?

thank you and welcome!! Oh yeah, the Himalayan is a super friendly but pretty impressively capable bike, especially for the price. It would be a great first I'd say

What you said about your shift in priorities from career to experiences reminded me a lot of a couple of TED talks by Jane McGonigal. She's a game designer & sees things through that lens, but there's a few commonalities between gaming and biking, such as the need for insense, eustress level focus, solving problems quickly, devising strategies for dealing with hazardous situations, teamwork in some cases, and endless self-improvement through repeated meaninful practice. Both are activities that can bring people together as friends. She quotes a study of deathbed regrets of hospice patients - none of them wish they'd worked longer hours or harder. Almost everyone wishes they'd taken time to have more fun, spent more time with loved ones & with friends, travelled more & seen more of the world. Jane's solution to her acute concussion was a game that gave her positive feedback every time she did any kind of self-care.

I had a friend who got hit in the same way on a bicycle and he passed away. Did you return to doing some of those sports like climbing and wake boarding or are they too hard on your legs? Your husband is very lucky to have such an adventurous wife that he can do sports with and motorcycling. My girlfriends were never that adventurous.

you are so right things change when you have an accident bless you I do hope you get over it time will heal you it has me you do go through some dark places I went to some really dark place even thinking of taking my own life which now I look upon a stupid and the easy way out now ten plus years after the accident I am still having treatment I look on life as you do now as I am lucky to be alive every day is a bonus and now I want to do something for me to get off my bed and start riding again which was my love for so many years I eat slept and drank bikes in my younger days fro 7 years old to 26 years old. I went through the same things as you, I was working 90 plus hours a week loved the money my wife loved it then a truck driver fell asleep went across onto the hard shoulder were I was working on a broken down car I was working for a well-known breakdown company the royal one say no more they were brilliant and I loved my job anyway the lorry driver hit my van which rolled up the bank I was under the bonnet of the car in front of my van which was then hit and was flung over thirty feet into the air and landed on my back on the outside lane the fast lane as most people call it luckily the car driver's reacted quickly and came to a stop before hitting me without thinking as a motocross rider and an enduro rider of past years I sprang to my feet and ran to the hard shoulder feeling a little pain in my legs and back and face as I had lost one of my front teeth and had bitten through my lip the people who car it was were safe as I sent them up the bank they came to my assist any way I went to hospital had two fractured vertebrae and four slipped discs and nerve damage to my legs so my right legs started to go numb and a few broken bones and a few months in hospital many operation you feel as a off road rider your adrenalyn is spiking so at the time you feel not to bad its when it wears off the pain kicks in and are you going to be able to walk again anyway I lost my job i was on 49 thousand a year down to 7 thousand a year that hit us hard bills still had to be paid luckily I had money from the accident which payed for most of things we were paying for at the time but even that soon goes the the company gave me a medical and gave me a full pension at 46 years old now I am 59 has lots of operations on my back one 12 hour one which has returned some feeling back in my right leg but still have a dead foot but I can live with that and I am on a crazy amount of morphine as my body has gotten used to it still have my reactions and I still can legally drive as this morphine has no brain effects all the high feeling has been removed and its just the pain killing which is left and its not adictive so now like you I want to restart to bike ride as I first rode a motor bike when I was 7 years old at age 9 I did the junior motorcycle club which was grasstrack motocross or scrambling as it was then in the 70s then I did stunt bike riding with the blue coats doing fire jumps car jumps people jumps standing on the seat riding backwards and ladder rides as four girls would climb on my bike and climb a ladder which was attached to my bike and hang out on both sides as I was riding around the stadiums and fields the royal show town and country loads of events during intervals we would come out in speedway tracks in Cornwall st austell those were the days now my life as covid is here I am stuck indoors but I want to change that yes I am dissabled with a back injury arthritis in my spine as well as nerve damage I can still ride a bike very well my son bought a 125 took his CBT and I rode it down our private back lane he never new I could ride and when I got on it backwards as a joke he thought whats he doig then I started it up and rode it oh to see there faces was so funny my stunt days of the 70s and early eightys all came back to me so if I can ride a bike backwards after thirty plus years from them I did some bunny hops front wheel stop and turn without going over the bars swinging it around 180 and went the over way then I got him to walk by the side of me and I road it with him stopped for over a minute just balanced it this was just ten minutes after riding his bike they were amazed and all my training came flooding back to me its true once you ride a bike you never forget it was all mucle memory and even with my bad back it never effected my ride at all as normal riding today is so much more assisted than the bikes I used to ride a CCM 500 motocross bike thrid hand when I bought it had to rebuild the engine crazy power 129 hp when riding an hour plus a lap if you dropped it in the last ten mis of the race then you had no chance on restarting it as its compression was so high and the kick start was on the left sidethe only time you were lucky if a marshal was brave enough to push start you if it was muddy then forget it the wheel would just skid even in third lol. now they have electric starts even my IT Yamaha 250 Enduro bike which had lights and plate was road legal as some of the Enduro races had road parts between the course were you had to wash the mud off your tyres and mudguards and goggles the proceed on the road to the next stage like the welsh enduro then when that was over we rode our bike back home only very occasionally we went in a car or truck as my road bike in the late 70s and early eights was a Suzuki X7 which was a 115 mile an hour bike on the tank I foolishly never bothered to take my test oh I so wish I did now I want to ride again before my injury get too bad for me my pain is under control I still have quick reactions and great vision I am 59 now my quick days have gone now ive had my fill of dropping to the tank to get every ounce of speed out of my bikes ive had accidents on and off road, I know the dangers I did do a bike safety course in the early eightys my dad made my take one before I was allowed on my Suzuki x7 it was the eRAC acu safety course its basically the same as the CBT were they follow you on road you get a route to goto no mikes them days then you do cone work and walk speed I just stopped and balanced it the trainer said I was the first to ace the test no faults in fact he said how did you stop for so long I had admitted the fact that I was a stunt bike rider I did tell him that explains it I did this on my X7 then I was allowed to ride it on the road I then should of took my bike test as the one I had just done was ten times harder than the actual test I then found out it was like an advanced course which I was never told so I know I will ace my cbt course we put some cones out in our private back lane and I aced the cones i even did them sitting backwards lol as I am dissabled i use a walking stick and have a mobility scooter which I hate using as I steel feel like I am 21 one like I said to my wife and three grown up kids the day I grow up is the day I kick my clogs so when I ride it on two wheels down the hills my wife says I give dissabled people a bad name it certainly tracks attention mind you when I am on the road I drive responsibly i was lucky to get trained by the police on a special course for advance drivers as my job demanded it as we worked in dangerous places as I found out to my detriment lol as now I have a new perspective on life as you say money is of no importance anymore your health is nothing else matters in your life obvious my wife and children are my concern but after that nothing else but as what I think you only live once then make the most of it and that's what I want to do as your videos inspire me also to get off my bed and do something and my something is to get back onto one thing I have always loved which form 7 years old had the best years of my life doing motorbike sports and stunts i wish I could relive the fun I had doing it so just by getting another bike will fulfil some of my bucket list a great portion of it I hope so all the best yo do get over it I have now even thou I was left disabled and unemployable i still have plenty of hobbies to keep me going and of course a wonderful family and children who look after me as well.sorry for waffling on as many people like me have been through horrible accident of no fault of there own and have come through with a better perspective on life in my point of view so god bless from john from Rugby UK

hi John, wow what a story. Thank you so much for taking the time to share. Your road side accident sounds brutal. I'm so glad you're still with us. You're managing your body and pain but I love your energy, it sounds like you're fulled with energy and determination. I'm really happy your company has looked after you. i know exactly what you mean about accident money really not going far once you've covered all the bills and medicals and it sounds like mine as been a tiny dot compared to what you've battled. It's lovely to hear you have a loving family around you, that's wonderful. I'm also excited to hear of your stunt riding! Man that's cool. I think you should push that dream on and find a way to ride again. Even if it's an epic trike, it's still the wind in the hair! Thank you so much for taking the time to say hi and for your kind words about my videos and energy. Life really can be tough sometimes so the support is very kind. I'm happy my videos help you too.

Just found your channel, and I can totally relate to what you are feeling. Last June 25th, I was riding one of my motorbikes when a fellow made an illegal u-turn in front of me. I had NO time- things went slo-mo and luckily I think my years of experience kicked in, and I was able to take those last meters and maneuver the bike to the front (hood/bonnet) of the car. Impact (T-Bone) and suddenly I'm flying through the air! Reports suggest I flew 100ft. Didn't lose consciousness, but I knew things weren't all good. Shattered pelvis, ruptured artery in my lower abdomen, broken thumb and a lil bit of rash. 12 days in the hospital, 3 surgeries... had to learn how to walk again. Been riding dirt and street for 20 years, and while we all know it's a risk, you really never think it'll happen to you. Makes you really think about what's important in life and makes you thankful for the people you have around you. You smile every day and work towards your goals. You crawl back to a sense of normalcy, and you learn that maybe things will never be as they were, but it's ok, you take what you can get. I'm almost a year on and have been back on my motorcycle as well as my road bikes for a few months. It's harder now for sure, but time heals all wounds. Take the pain with the joy. This is what being alive is...peaks and valleys, storms as well as sunny spring days 😊. You are stronger now because of the trials and tribulations you have faced. Forward always with a smile, we still have much to do!
