Finnish person here - the people on the phone are extremely long winded in a stereotypical "drunken country-folk" way. The subtitles make sense of what they are trying to say, and condense the message to be about 20% of what was actually said.

"Surely the engine's not fussy enough to need filtered air." YES. YES IT IS.

Jon plays game with ultra complex videogame logic mechanics:dominates Jon plays game with complex mechanics based on real life: spends hours trying to figure out how to start a car, Has yet to discover how to use a wrench.

Jon, GAS explodes and drives the pistons, OIL lubricates the engine. Oil doesn't explode. Also, you are totally forgetting about screwing things in. Almost every part of the engine need to be screwed in multiple places. You need to use the spanners for that. That's why everything breaks when you try to attach a new part on it.

OK, so... terminology... out the window. Sure, I get what he means but you cannot radiate cold because that's impossible. Literally impossible. 8:35 This man seriously needs to watch a car factory documentary. 11:28 "Surely the engine's not fussy enough to need an air filter" If you don't mind having to rebuild it constantly, yeah, it works fine without one of those... 13:55 This is why maps have a "You are here" mark. Yes, yes, yes! *Jon then assumes the sump is the fuel supply* Kill me now. :/ 26:35 "The pistons! They have to go in here. They have to!" No shit, Sherlock. This game doesn't give you shit for no reason... although, that would be a really evil way to trick people: give them spare parts. Muhahahahaha! :D 27:50 The map related penny drops. 30:05 Say "oil" again. I dare ya, I double dare ya! Also: "This piston and this piston fire simultaneously..." Close but no cigar. 31:20 Yay! The gasket is in; now the cylinders have a chance at least of maintaining compression. Also: "I've actually used the vast majority of pieces I need to construct the engine. Which makes me think I'm really, really annoyingly close to having actually constructed a full engine." Yes, you are. Annoyingly close. I'll give you that one. Beautiful and enjoyable video. This is gonna be horrible. Fun, but horrible. Also Jon if you not know by now an alternator is basically a dynamo, in the same way you have a dynamo on a bike. Just that it creates alternating current.

As a mechanic I honestly have been screaming at my phone on a bus because of you Jon.

I like how beer puts thirst down even though alcohol dehydrates you. It'd be funnier if beer made you "better" at building the car but once you were done while drunk it was just a complete mess having told you the wrong placements were correct.

It was then, when Jon found the tool case, he realised what he had really got himself into.

John, your brain is getting in the way - you need to think slower. Simple solutions that work and take 30 seconds are smarter than iffy 5 minute castles of intellect. As an example, when knowing something needs screwed in and looking at a wrench case, try wrenches until one fits. When touching pieces together to get check marks - try touching all of them rather than obsessively focusing on holes pistons eventually go in without giving them something to attach to. You are great, you can get it :)

My 56 year old grandfather spent almost forty years working as a mechanic. He laughed his ass off watching Jons many failures and this is now the only non legend of Zelda game he owns.

The morning routine made me laugh harder than I have in some time. I implore you to persevere through this, even if it's just a once a month series, to completion

Jon, I have an idea. If you go out and look at your car, open the bonnet and inspect the engine. Then next time you will be able to pair up the parts with how they look in your actual car. Just a thought.

So much respect for how quickly you are grasping mechanics after being able to see how a car goes together. I am quite impressed.

Jon, the red line in the map is not the edge of the world or anything. It's actually a highway that circles the lake Perärjävi - the name of the city whose countryside of you live in - at Kesselinperä. That highway happens to be the fastest way to get to the city, and you should not take the route past Loppe, because the it's a narrow dirt road and if you go off the road it's about as much of a pain in the ass as you can imagine.

I would say this is going to be painful, but to be honest, I probably know about as much as Jon does about car mechanics, at least the putting together of a car come on who doesn't know what rear wheel drive is (also, I did watch a lot of Top Gear so...)

The bit where the car ended up on its side caused me to snort tea out of my nose. So that was fun.

I don't know if anyone else explained this, but the Satsuma pun is because the car in My Summer Car is a respectably accurate recreation of a first generation Datsun Cherry. Satsumas are another small, Japanese fruit, so the car was named accordingly. Now that the joke has been explained, everyone may groan.

Jon, if you ever play this game again after this set of videos, you should stream it so we can yell hints and encouragement and frustrations at you live.

I can't tell if you're joking when you say that the engine works by igniting oil fumes. Just to be clear, it's the fuel/gas/petrol that ignites, not the oil. The oil is there to keep the metal parts from rubbing against each other too much and destroying each other.

I'm glad you gave this another go. I've been watching a play-through on another channel.

The red lines on the map are an asphalt main road, so it wasn't a dead end. To use the sauna, go in there and turn both knobs on the heater thingy to full and go do something else for a while. When the thermometer in the sauna is around (IIRC) 90°C, grab the bucket in there, put it under the shower faucet and fill it with water. Take it back to the sauna and use the ladle to throw water on the heater... that makes steam and steam gets your dirtiness down. The fly buzzing doesn't stop until you have the deodorant though. I've only gone to a store in the upper left corner town and just beware that interacting with the shopping bag, other than carrying it, can lead to it spilling the contents all over the place. That really sucks, if it happens anywhere but in your kitchen. I would recommend using a guide that tells you what size spanner to use with each component, since, unless something has changed since I last played, it's a frustrating process of trying spanners until one fits... and there are just so many of them. I've never done the firewood run, but afaik you use the trailer that is near where the sewage truck is and pull it using the tractor that is parked in the same place you chop the wood.

Always take the beer with you, you never know when you'll need it!

Alternator = alternating generator. it generates alternating current which the car uses as a source of electricity. As long as the engine is running it will continue to produce electricity for electronics. Carburetors are what mixes the air and fuel that is used for the explosions that powers the car.

No finnish isnt that long of a langue, but the game has been made so that the people seem as countryish ( in a lack of a better word) that they use funny slang and stuff. I love the humor in this game, many stuff that only us Finns understand
