Part 2 of my 'What's in the bag?' series takes a look inside my summer gear bag which holds my warm water essentials for scuba diving trips. Inside my lightweight kit bag, I keep my light BCD, DIR style regulators and shorty wetsuit.
Most divers today travel to warm destinations so learning about light-weight travel kit is essential so you know where you can save some weight and what other scuba divers are diving.
The rest of my essentials you can see in my Part 1 Video Here:

The most important thing about scuba diving is that you do it safely. And that is what Safe Diving is all about.
On this channel, I will discuss all aspects of going underwater from equipment advice and techniques to the little things like what to pack in your bags for a dive trip.
My entire professional career has been spent in and around the scuba diving industry and travelling to diving destinations both warm and cold.

I really like the in depth information (no pun intended) for more advanced divers.

Hi. Only just found your channel, i spoke with you briefly one time when you were making videos in SS, great to see you are making your own now. Subscribed! i have been fine tuning my BP/W setup for the last year and thought i had it perfected. After this videos i am on the hunt for an Agir harpa loop & whatever you call that loop to hold the SMB in place. Very informative, looking forward to future videos. Thank you

Perfect video thank you for that. My only suggestion would be maybe to make a video on how to pack all you kit into a bag for travelling as that’s pretty much what I’m looking for next as I have similar to you where I have an “essentials” bag and then just a bag with rash vests etc in like this but I think a nice tutorial on how to pack everything into one bag for travelling would be great as I’m looking to take my diving gear abroad more next year 😄👌 keep up the great videos!

Since you're a fan of Backwing BCDs: In the OWD I learned not to clip too much gear on my D-rings (#christmas tree). In the Rescue Diver Course, I was advised to bring a DSMB, a spare mask, a backup lamp, and all that stuff. Now I'm thinking about a backwing setup. Where do you put that stuff on a BWJ? Maybe that's even an idea for a video: What extra equipment do you really on you as an advanced, but recreational diver?
@SafeDiving
@SafeDiving 4 года назад
Thigh pockets, most of my diving is in a drysuit but you can get diving shorts with pockets on too. Just adds extra space for your dSMB and spares

I know this is an older video, but I hope you review your Poseidon Cyklons. I recently purchased a set and would love to get your opinion on them. This was a great video. Thanks
@SafeDiving
@SafeDiving 6 месяцев назад
I love the Cyklons, they're a simple regulator and very practical. If they're new you may need a new fitting to let you connect a standard 9/16" regulator hose. Poseidon 2nd stages often needed an adaptor to fit a standard thread regulator hose

I would like to hear your thoughts on backplate and wing setups that have weight pouches and clips on the arm straps like the xdeep nx zen deluxe
@SafeDiving
@SafeDiving 4 года назад
I prefer to steer clear of both. Integrated weights make the whole setup heavier so I prefer a standard weightbelt and a small amount of trim weight wherever you need it. Clips I tend to avoid too, they can wear and break over time. And they tend to cost more too, so I go for the safer, cheaper option...

Did the loop on the bottom left of the back plate come as standard or was it something you fitted? If you fitted it, could you show how it’s done please. I’ve got an XDEEP NX plate so would like to add one. Thanks.

Yeah, it's an after market upgrade. It's called an Agir Harpa Loop. There are a few copies out there but it's my preferred way to make the harness adjustable without any breaks.

Hi Mark, I really enjoy watching your videos. I would like to ask you that do you recommend vented ear plugs for ear pain while diving? it has been my 7th dive in total last week but every time I get under the water I am having troubles with my ears. I am trying equalize by pinching,swallowing or ascend and descend again but it is really restricting me.Any recommendations will be appreciate. Thank you.
@SafeDiving
@SafeDiving 4 года назад
Hey Deniz! Before stuffing things in your ears I'd recommend chatting with a Dive Doctor, just so that they can advise if there are any anatomical causes or fixes. There's a bunch of things that can cause trouble equalising and even make it impossible at times. Start equalising your ears on the way to the dive site in your car. This can loosen things up and get them ready before you even see the water. Avoid alcohol and smoking, because these can cause tissues to swell, that and sea water in your nose, these can all cause swelling that can make equalising harder. Equalise all the time too, because you can reach a point where the pressure holds opennings closed so there's no way you can equalise, that's why we tell you to go up a bit, which you've been doing, but it may be that you need to go all the way back to the beginning and start again. After that check out some freediving channels, because they're all about different equalisation techniques that may help you find a better technique. I usually only recommend ear plugs to avoid ear infections getting into your ears.

While teaching new open water students, do you use your BP or a standard BCD? Does the dive center dictate which style you use?
@SafeDiving
@SafeDiving 4 года назад
I don't teach very much any more, but given the choice I'd probably put them in rec BCDs in the pool and plates in open water so they can try out both. It's up to the Dive Centre though and their budget. School equipment is a big investment for them and they get special rates from the brands if they buy school equipment, but it's only ever jacket style BCDs. So it costs them a lot more upfront to build backplate setups for school use.

@@SafeDiving This is one of the big reasons I love indie teaching, I can have my students in a BPW and long hose from day 1, vs relearning later.

Several "manual standards" in TEC says longhose lengths should be 210cm. Why did you choose the 150cm length?

Hey Mark! Thanks for the great content. I just bought an XR plate w/ an Apeks WTXD30 wing after seeing your light setup. I'm too new to trust 18 but I'll get there! Was surprised to see they aren't compatible! Taking a closer look at your rig, looks like you got around this by just using the tank bands to hold the whole sandwich together. Any thoughts you can share? Is it secure enough? I want my setup to be pretty rigid, and I always know I can add a single tank adapter to get around the compatibility issue... or drill a new hole. Just curious! Thanks in advance!
@bloodymarvelous4790
@bloodymarvelous4790 9 месяцев назад
You tighten the cam band around the cylinder, and therefor around the backplate and wing as well. It's not going to be as rigid as an STA, but it's not going move around on you. Of course the wing will move around on the cam band if you don't have a cylinder attached. I just bring my SS WTX-D40 when I'm travelling. Yeah, it's heavier and won't allow me to pack as many shirts and pants, but I find I spend most of my time out of the water in just board shorts anyway.

Hey Mark! I’ve been looking like crazy for a small profile pinch style cam band like the one you’re using here to stabilize your cylinder… Could you direct me to where could I find it?? Thank you!! Love your vids!!

That strap started life as a belt for a climbing chalk bag. If you search for a 1 inch pinch clip belt you should be able to find something that should do the job for you.
