Good explanation on the stock tunes. While I went the BBR turbo route, the tune was smooth from idle to redline but the power was way off compared to the 210 whp advertising. I absolutely recommend having a reputable tuner do a custom tune.
Great work and kudos to you Sir, for the time and effort in documenting the project.. also for critiquing what wasn't right, and giving advice on how to correct it..
Hey Jason, thanks for the upload. I've been waiting with baited breath on how your SC install went. Firstly, nice work doing it yourself and great job following up with the FAB tune. I'm still secretly saving up for a SC for my ND (keeping the purchase hidden from the wife). Keep up the vids champ, love your work. G'day from Canberra, Australia.
Thanks for this. I've been interested in supercharging mine but was not sure if it was even noticeable enough. I was going for the Edelbrock supercharger kit as well. They said the CARB tune so that it is legal in California only makes 190hp or so.
so the fav9 tune was the night and day difference compared to the edelbrock? That's crazy! I heard that before but this confirms it I guess. thanks for the great video! (but please try to level your audio. your voice is super low, thx!)
4Th3Truthful I’m sure if you’re cruising, you’ll average 25+ mpg. That motor isn’t working hard at all in that little car. LS motors have been known to put up 30+mpg in Vettes when just putting around. It’s nice to be able to shift right around 1500 rpm. Lol
@@VictorPitstop My plan for my 19RF Club Recaro, replace camshaft, flywheel, supercharger, just those 3 your looking over 250 from 181 stock, widebody kit , coil-overs, yada, yada say $25K without labor
Please check out engineering explained's video on his experience. He had low throttle response before getting his worked out. He seems to be enjoying his now.
Yep, ive been following his experience. I'm in the middle of my first long road trip with the RF since the supercharger has been installed. I'm hoping to get some thoughts down about the experience soon.
Has anybody done a smaller pulley, race gas, max effort dyno tune on one of these? TVS900 is awfully small, too bad they couldn't design a kit to make the TVS1320 fit.
I'm 5'11"....i think. The car is snug, but comfortable. The wife and I have done a couple of 8+ hour road trips in it and have been very comfortable. I know there are seat brackets that will lower the seats another inch if headroom is a concern.
I suspect Nope (although you can always try to get an owner to order a replacement blower). Without the tune to make it smog, its a race part. With the new EPA bs, covering their azz is a nessesity to stay in business.
This should come as ZERO surprise, and *this is NOT Edelbrock's fault*. Look, Edelbrock is going to be a conservative as possible with their canned tune to be safe. They would have a serious business problem if their bolt-ons started blowing up motors every time Joe Hobbylobby decides to play with wrenches in his garage. Anyone who knows anything about tuning would tell you that a canned tune will never be as good as a custom tune and that it's implicitly expected that you tune the car once you start doing anything as serious as forced induction.
Its one thing to be conservative. Its something else completely to make a tune that burns out cats, causes dangerous surging (worse that i experienced), and causes the engine to LOSE power. All of these are real, common issues with the Edelbrock tune and i was aware of all of them when i bought the kit. As we also know, the internet tends to exaggerate problems so i took a chance. The kit with a tune was on sale and made it such that purchasing a custom tune seperately would still put me under the 'normal' price. Edelbrock dropped the ball on the tune.
@@jasonmiracle5185 I've heard good things about Fab9's tune for the edelbrock supercharger and very bad things about the EB tune. With the former, people have been claiming that their cars drive in a normal/smooth way afterwards. I've been eyeing getting just the naturally-aspirated Fab9 tune for my ND1 club, because it prevents the engine's natural tendency to slightly run out of steam in the high rev ranges and adds maybe 800 rpm to the top. Want to prevent spending so much money to trade in for the 2019's sweet rev-happy engine. A small, small part of me is considering the EB supercharger with Fab9 tune, but I'm at high elevation so...
@@Aurora-sz1bc I've been very impressed with Fab9's canned tune. I don't think you can go wrong with them. I have couple hundred miles on the supercharger now and still love it. The car has been transformed with the extra torque. With as often as i see the traction control light now, I'm sure new tires will be on my list soon!
@@jasonmiracle5185 Needing new tires soon is a good problem. Also, did you notice that the extra weight of the SC affected the handling balance of the car at all? Appreciate your feedback, by the way.
That’s a valid question I think because the entire supercharger kit with intercooler, pump, hoses, etc added quite a bit of extra mass under the hood....but no, I haven’t really noticed any extra weight when driving. This project makes me really want to LS swap a Miata!
Lash LaRue doesnt mean I won’t do it 🤷🏽♂️ even if I got pulled over a cop wouldn’t know it’s a different tune. Only way to know is emissions testing which I could easily re flash to edelbrock
@@isidrotechdecker True, that's a "sleeper" for you, but then you need to reflash somehow to make it legal for emissions testing. Some cities even have rolling emissions testing stations designed to s*** all over the performance minded crowd - you just drive by one on the highway and they know. Mostly catalytic converters are the issue.
Lash LaRue I fee that even a rolling emission station won’t go through the trouble. As soon as they see the carb Sticker and I have my cats I don’t think it’ll be a problem
Thanks for documenting your installation and tuning experience. Subscribed for future videos! Personally, I'd just get the carbon fiber valve cover. Do you have any thoughts on running E85?
E85 isnt easy to find around here...plus i still want to keep it easy road trip in without worrying about whether E85 will be available along the way. I haven’t seen carbon fiber valve covers...got a link?
@@jasonmiracle5185 It's not a full valve cover, but replaces the Skyactiv part. www.carbonmiata.com/shop/mazda-mx-5/nd-15-mazda-mx-5-mazda-mx-5/exterior-parts-nd-15-mazda-mx-5-nd-15-mazda-mx-5-mazda-mx-5/engine-cover-2/ Perhaps a combination of painting the valve cover and using this engine cover would be perfect. I also wanted to ask, how are your oil temps when driving hard?
It felt like something was wrong. It's wrong to drive a car like that on the most boring roads i have ever seen. Move to the mountains dude, for the sake of your Miata.
If you’re in a area where you have to wait thru seasons/ weather a good amount of time, why not run some decent gauge wire and move battery to the trunk, and get a small sport compact battery. As well possibly remove the washer fluid reservoir. Would free up a lot of room in that bay. Me personally I’d never run the windshield washers in a sports car, especially one I’m modifying. And the battery id try to relocate as well. Just my input, would be nice to see
Thats great until you hit mud while bombing canyons and can't clear it off as the next corner approaches. A small washer bottle is okay, but deleting it kinda sucks on a car you actually want to drive fast. Sports cars still need to work in the real world, not just hard parking and races that get cancelled by rain.
Dont be too hard on yourself on the "quality" of your content for the time being. Just record that shit be material and post it . Just came here from Engineering Explained supercharging his miata and having the same issues. Looks like theres a fundamental problem with the ots tune from eldebrock sad part is it's been so long and they've yet to update their tune file
Im not entirely sure on mpg yet because it just hasnt been driven that much with the crappy weather we've had. I *think* im down 4-5 mpg from what it was before.
