The CB750 and the original Z1 were the superbikes of my era in the 70’s and this has so many nods to that era. It’s a lovely thing.

Every time you do one of these tests it just proves the point that you really don’t need to spend £15-20k plus to enjoy motorcycling. There are so many good low mileage machines out there that will give you years of enjoyment in this price bracket. Great that you keep highlighting them 👍

A few months back I brought myself a 2017 CB1100rs, initially I thought it might be a bit underwhelming at only 88bhp but after riding it for a while I've retuned my brain and riding style to it and I absolutely love it, in the plasticy throw away world we live in the CB feels like it is built to last. Bravo Honda 👏

It's all relative really, if you ride a moped then 88bhp will feel quick but if your weapon of choice is a Hayabusa etc then not so quick at all, I'm sure any seasoned rider would understand this .

Great review, and I'm pleased to see your enthusiasm for this bike. I owned a 2018 CB1100RS and can honestly say it was one of the best of many bikes I've owned over 45 years of riding. Sumptuously smooth, comfortable, looks to die for and possibly the best build quality I've ever seen in a bike.

Nice review. I purchased a new '14 model languishing in a showroom in December of '17 in an attempt to capture the magic of my 1975 CB550F purchased new as a senior in high school. I immediately installed a full Arrow exhaust to emulate the Kerker set I had on the old 550. The family DNA is there as you'd expect along with 100 extra pounds and nearly twice the ponies. As the Flyer noted she's a mellow ride for the most part but with the Arrow pipe and a pull to redline in 3rd gear she really comes alive with that 4 cylinder howl of my youth. I can't imagine parting with her as she brings back so many fond memories as we make new ones.

Hi Andy, thanks for doing this review, I own a 2019 RS version. I love this bike and the story of how Honda brought this air cooled engine back into production 25 years after it stopped making them is interesting (as I understand it they had to bring engineer's back out of retirement to achieve this) , it was a nod to the 750 but they needed to up the displacement to meet Euro 4 standard etc. You're right it's got plenty of torque and it's not intimidating to ride, will cruise all day long but you can still open it up when you need to. It is a heavy bike but typical Honda the weight just disappears when you start riding it. The build quality on mine is lovely, proper old school feel, and a homage to the 1970 bike ❤.

I loved the looks of pretty much every CB that Honda made right through the 70's and 80's and this was a nod to them, truly a beautiful machine. Bought my CB1000 big one in 1995 and still own it, its no racer but accelerates like mad, sadly I'm now seventy and my legs have to be in the right mood to ride it these days because it is heavy but no heavier than my 1980 GSX1000ET having said that, fortunately I also have a CB250KO so I'll probably be reduced to riding that for the first time since I bought it in 1973, I'd love one of these CB1100s but I doubt I'll get one now.

I currently own a 2014 CB1100 DLX myself. Fantastic bike. I also have a 1971 CB750 that my Dad bought new back in the day. I've always felt that the CB1100 is what the CB750 would have morphed into had Honda continued to offer it, along with the expected technical updates along the way. I got to test ride a 2014 DLX back in 2015 and had been on the hunt for one after that experience. I later learned that there were only 300 examples released in the U. S. for this specific model/year. Persistence paid off and I managed to find a lightly used example (3K miles) that I had to have shipped to my location. After riding it several times, the effort felt justified. Loved the ride-along video, but wanted expand on a few points. My DLX has a slightly larger fuel tank (4.6 gal. vs 3.9 for the CB1100 Standard), which provides for a range of about 200 miles. You neglected to note the electronic fuel injection. This is my first bike with EFI and I love it! No choke, cold start issues, just stab the starter button and you're off!. The ABS brakes are superb (another first for me) and have proven to work quite effectively (don't ask). The DLX also has one more gear than the Standard CB1100 (6 instead of the usual 5 speeds). I almost rarely use the 6th gear, but it does smooth things out greatly at higher speeds. The power of the in-line-four is amazing for a standard-style bike. Aggressive launches can & will lift the front wheel if you're not careful! Thanks for spreading the word about one of Honda's little recognized, but true gems!

I have a 14 DLX as well. Got in new in 15. It sat in the local dealership for months. They dropped the price considerably and I bought it on a bit of a whim. I am so glad I did. I've had many bikes over the years and still have a 3 in the garage, but the CB is by far my favorite motorcycle I've ever owned. I can say with confidence, I will never part with this bike.

Love my 2020 CB1100RS,, put it alongside an old CB750 SuperFour and it’s a very authentic retro. The RS gets a more sporting rake and 17s, narrower bars and better Showa suspension, worth a try Andy. Super easy to live with as you say. Pair of Arrows on way 😎 and it does hustle and revs out nice too. If you wind it up it goes but very manageable as you say Andy, a true old school 4banger GT.

It's just effortless to ride and I've done country trips on mine where I've spent literally all day on the bike with no issues. The whole bike is the business. I like the video. I have one of these, a 2016. I am only five foot eight and although it’s 250kg, as the weight is down low it’s an easy ride. It has plenty of power and torque but I wouldn’t call it a “massive beast”. (You nailed it later in the review when you said “I thought it was a beast but actually it’s a bit of a puppy”) To me it rides like a learner bike….the weight will not “forgive” like a learner bike but the rest is easy and forgiving with such a lineal power it will give you as much as you can handle….I read somewhere that someone took a bunch of these to a dyno and all were 85-88HP at the rear wheel! If that’s true then this is 105ish HP at the crank (allowing for a 15% difference).

I love CB1100, but the most beautiful is the first version from 2010-2013. All of them have great, flexible engines, drive easily and give great joy and pleasure while driving. Great bikes.

For me the best looking version is the 14 CB1100 DLX. The 4 into 2 exhaust just looks right.

I can respect your opinion, but I completely disagree with it. The versions after 2013 lost their character, stopped being honest and started pretending to be something they were not. For example, CB1100EX started to look like CZ350 (type 472). Personally, I prefer the first version of this motorcycle. Although this is of course a matter of taste. It would be bad if everyone liked the same thing.

@@chrishart8548 I’m not sure about the X model. I had the CB 750F SuperSport. By today’s standards it wouldn’t be much, but back then it was pretty hot :)

What a lovely bike....thanks for the reveiw. There is something special about the any of the big old 4 cylinder bikes. I must admit while I watched you riding and speaking about it, it did seem to me that that I'm kind of surprised you don't have something like it in your garage. For the riding you getbto do for pleasure I would have thought it ticks all the boxes. With limited space what could you swap it for LOL with more space I'm sure you'd have one and many others. Don't think any of us are happy with one bike/style but funds and space usually dictate a compromise. You are a lucky man Andy :-) keep doing....what you're doing.

Great review, thanks. I too have always liked the look of the CB1100, and I also thought it looked intimidating. 250Kg, I thought, too heavy. So I bought a Speedmaster, 263kg, then a BMW R1250RS, 243kg. Hmm. Great value at £6k. Now if I had a bigger garage...

Nice review of a lovely bike. I test rode an RS version with alloy wheels a while back. Loved it but it was a bit tatty & they wouldn’t budge in the price department, so I walked away. I too noticed the vibes when you wound it up on the overtakes but nothing major as you said. I’ll hunt down another RS one day.

I had one for a short time too (2018 model). A great bike, but it's weight was a bit too much for me - not the bikes fault though. It exudes quality in every bit of it. The mild performance (for an 1100) was dented a little by the weight but the handling, brakes and ride quality were superb. Nice review Andy, thanks 👍

Had this on the shortlist when looking for a retro classic looking bike in 2019. Loved the looks - but could not get past the fact they were +50kg heavier than the Speedtwin. That’s about 8 stone heavier! And that’s before I put my 97kg on the seat😂. I ended up going with the Speedtwin and don’t regret it at all. But the Honda is still a great looking machine!
@TheMissendenFlyer

Of course the 1200 Speed Twin is the lightest of all the Triumph Retro's (even the Street Twin/Speed Twin 900) which is one of the reasons I bought one - I didn't think the CB felt that much heavier!!

When I passed my test back a few years ago, I was semi interested in a CB1100. It does look lovelly. I never got a test ride. The main thing that put me off was it's weight, plus it doesn't have a Triumph badge ! (surprise surprise !)
