I bought a cheap road legal 2003 Suzuki GSF1200S Bandit project that initially wasn't running.
In this series I will take you on a journey of how I'm going to get this bike looking and running great on a tight budget.
Part 12 - fairing repair, reassemble and admire. The Bandit is ready to go!

I'm doing a little bit of body work on my Kawasaki rear fender, and I hate to say it but most of these plastic parts are "ABS" plastic. So what I had done was I went to the plumbing supply store and picked up some "Oatey" ABS cement, which is pretty much ABS dissolved into acetone. When you "glue" your ABS plumbing pipes together what actually happens is the acetone dissolves the pipe material and the pipes "melt" into each other. Shortly thereafter the acetone evaporates away and what you're left with is a pretty solid ABS welded assembly. Solid enough for plumbing purposes, anyway. I put "two and two" together and used the ABS glue to weld up a nasty crack in the fender, then added drips of ABS glue and built-up some worn edges. Sanded it all back smooth (120 grit and 220 grit) & did final finish with some primer suitable for plastic (400 grit wet-sand). "In my opinion" I wouldn't think of repairing ABS any other way: no metal staples or thermo-welding, no epoxy, no other cement. Best part: if you don't believe me, just pick up some shattered ABS pieces from a wrecking yard, and some Oatey ABS cement, & give 'er a whirl. (My thought: if that test doesn't work, it just proves the shattered pieces you got weren't actually ABS). (ABS = acrylonitrile butadiene styrene)

For removal and install of the carb bank, I undo the throttle grip and release both cables there which gives a ton of slack making for easy job. Reverse the order Putting them back on and use a hair dryer and WD40 all over the rubber boots. Warm boots and WD40 they will pop right back on! I have done Bandit 1200 carbs around 20 times or so. More tips on the 1200 bandit. The factory gas cap is a mechanical engineering marvel designed to prevent any isotropic gassing. As the bike ages, this gas cap seizes up and the closed loop venting PARS malfunctions and will prevent fuel from entering the carbs at the proper rate if at all making owner of the bike trouble shooting what the heck the problem is? Fuel valve flow? Vapor lock? and on and on and on!! Simple fix is to drill a tiny hole just inside the rubber gasket of the fuel cap allowing it to vent and problem solved. Most have no idea how complicated the factory gas cap is. There are veins, valves, check valves and on and on and on. Take one apart to clean and make it function again. You will see. Complex city!! Or simply drill and be done. I have a ton more tips if needed. Enjoy the ride. Bandit 1200 is an awesome bike!!!

@grabir01 - first up, thanks for watching my video 🙂. The carb removal is such an easy job. As you said, heating up the rubbers does make it straightforward. Luckily mine all popped in without effort. I didn't bother with a return cable. My original one was absolutely stuffed. The bike shop mechanic said he's never bothered with them. The spring is pretty stiff so something would have to be seriously wrong yo have a stuck throttle ay,!. Interesting info on the fuel cap. Thanks for sharing that.

More tips on the bandit please I’m about to go drill that hole now I was wondering why gas kept leaking out of the two valves and bubbling towards the rear of the bottom of the tank

@@BIKELIFEAP If you have any debris /rust , tank liner IE Por 15 or what ever, it will make its way to you carbs eventually. It may be 50-150 miles but it will make it past the fuel valve filter and any inline fuel filter. So install a gravity feed old school fuel valve and plug the vacuum port with a cap. Instill a glass fuel bowl to trap anything that gets by your inlet. You will thank me. It took me over a year to sort my bike. Now that I have it figured out, I could have sorted it in a couple of hours. You can too. Maybe I should do a video of what all I did that sorted the bike.

@@BIKELIFEAP The gas cap causes both excessive pressure in the tank and also vacuum in the tank. It goes both ways depending on ambient temp, how much fuel and more. Drilling the hole allows the tank to vent which ends this problem. To test and see, open your gas cap and drive around. See if your problem goes away.

Be curious to know what sort of mileage your getting have an identical bandit to yours has a pipe on it and assume it’s been re jetted but it loves the fuel
