Never done brackish but I was raising brine shrimp for my freshwater tank and I would have large die offs of the brine shrimp a day or two after hatching. Not sure why but I assumed ammonia so I started putting excess duckweed from my fish tank into brine shrimp tank and now I don’t get the die off and they grow to adults. I replace the duckweed about every 10-14 days when it turns white so it may last longer in a brackish tank if you want to try that

Thanks for sharing. I’m using water lettuce to do the same job as the duckweed. I thought I might have a water quality issue but all of my test came back good

When I was a kid, I had an aquarium crash when my heater went nuts and it got too warm. It put me off fish keeping for many years. Right now I have a small tank with mollies, they are good little fish. I just put a small amount of Himalayan salt in the tank, 1 tsp. and have lots of plants in the tank. No problems whatsoever. The water where I live is hard water, and they seem to be fine. My suggestion would be to have lots of plants, keep it simple, do minor water change 10% every 1 to 2 weeks....and feed small amounts once a day ONLY. No power feeding. Less is better. Keep the light on a timer. Maybe watch Cory at Aquarium CoOp channel and ask him questions. 🙂 Good luck

I’ve been keeping fish for 20 years and never had anything like this happen. Obviously, I’ve lost individual fish, but I’ve never had a tank crash. I’ve been stocking more plants while I’m deciding on new fish. Just some cories and tetras in there right now.

6.5ph is pretty low for brackish. Most are hard water with 7.8ph and up. Give it a goog 👍

Any loss of life can be heart-rendering to some, including myself. I've just begun in this hobby and I'm trying to learn as much as I can. You gave me some very good information that I will certainly keep in mind as I continue to enjoy this hobby. I always try and learn something from any situation, such as yours, and now I know that even with the correct water parameters there can still be that odd occurrence that can upset the status quo.

I’ve been keeping fish for a long time. Sometimes they die for no apparent reason but it’s usually just one fish out of vote tank. I’ve never had all of my fish diet once like this. This week I’ve been tearing it down and resetting it up. I think I came up with a really cool community for the new set up.

I had African Cichlids about 20 years ago. They required a brackish, higher ph. I started with a 55g tank. I had too few fish to start with back then now am setting up a 90g I got a few weeks ago. I got the canister filter last evening for a deal. The tank came with the the hang on the rear filters. I will probably use them on smaller tanks. I am taking my time and will get the tank cleaned and the sand, and begin the set up in the coming days!

I hope everything went well setting up your tank. My 125 is thriving and full of plants and fish now. I also just set up a 220 gallon.

I started with six males from Petsmart, I thought I had the biological filtration established. I started with a 407 and a hob that came with cartridges. It wasn't adequate. I added 8 more males and 2 bn plecos. Two Mbuna died (stress/ aggression), Saulosi/ Swedish Hongi I had to remove the stressed ones to another tank for a time. I have added them back. I had to remove the zebra white lab twice. He had swim bladder disease. I placed him again with lights out and covered with blankets. We'll see how he fares again, he's one of the larger males. I now have a Tidal 75, a large sponge, and a 23x20x12 w/d w/ spay bar and rolled filter media with matrix, and another sponge before the return. I also placed a couple of plants in the return and overflow. I have used fb mktpl. for all/most ofv my setup. I have finally got the tank cycled and am just trying to make it peaceful . 90g

6.5 seems very very low for a brackish tank. Do you know what it was when everybody was happy and healthy? Also I know you feel oxygen levels were fine because of aeration... Do you have an ORP meter? I have been keeping fish for 50+ years. When I first got my ORP meter the reading in my 75G with huge pumps, filtration and air stones was 160 millivolts. BTW I record ORP & pH from one of my tanks every time I walk in the fish room ... The reading this morning was 386 millivolts... Night and day. I now use plenums and "BCB" bags An absolute game changer for me in the hobby. I had a 125 in the past. A large tank cries out for large fish. You should get a school of Silver Dollars, at least six. Bala Sharks, at least four. Koi Goldfish, not true koi, get four. Good tank mates and very impressive adult fish, IMHO.

The tank is only 18in wide. None of them are an option for this footprint.
