I built a small grocery store with a few gas pumps in khonkaen for my girlfriends family. This was 4 years ago. Went to visit when it was all done. The mom and dad are hard working and to this day, very appreciative and thankful I came into their lives. I know it was a stupid thing to do, but I was the one who wanted to do this. I wanted to help her family get out of poverty. Today, her family is doing well…we are no longer together but remain great friends. The mom and dad often keeps in touch with me and asks when I will visit again. They pretty much treats me like an adopted son and often says that when I am ready, I can live and retire there. Anyways, just wanted to tell you a different side to a Thai family.
I don't put up with any bullshit like this story. One visit to the family & I'm not comfortable I'm not going back. These dudes need to learn that if they don't take charge of their lives someone else will.

If you start a Thai related search history "bargirl scammers" & stay on theme pretty quickly you are gonna find Dan. But if you start with "find my perfect Thai wife" & stay on theme you will be in a totally different digital environment, Dan will be way down your feed if there at all. Coming from the pre all pervasive internet era the way it used to work is if you were a smart wannabe fresh expat, first people to connect with are the longest term local expats. These guys always knew the scams & were always willing to entertain with competing horror stories which seemed never ending. The guys who started & got stuck in the party scene were always in trouble.

For a farang who has had a bad marriage in the west and then comes to Thailand these girls seem angelic and you want to believe everything that they say. That is why it will never stop. Its absolutely insane how they listen to there mothers! Had a girl one day who I used to speak to from time to time face time me crying because she was so hungry! I told her just go eat then and her answer was she cant eat because her mother said she is getting fat and she won't be bueitiful and get any customers in the bar! This girl is 38 by the way and I laughed and said tell your mum to go f**k herself just having a joke but then how the tables turned against me and was warned dont I ever disrespect her mother 😂 - after that call she was swiftly put on the blocked list
I feel bad for the gal in this story. It sounds like the mother is one of those folks who can't stand someone having a better life than her, and is driven to ruin it any chance she gets. I've seen too many parents like that here in the U.S. too, sadly.
Since her husband is a deadbeat, she probably just doesn’t want to lose her daughter. That’s reasonable but maybe the way she goes about it isn’t good.
I understand this a childs duty is to care for their parents until death in many Asian cultures, especially the eldest child, its very sad & tragic for many young women who never break away.
It isn't so bad as you are describing it. They are the heirs. To receive the fifty acres. Family business and other benefits they take care of their parents. Not out of generosity or cultural values.

That's why I have spent alot of time teaching my thai partner emotional blackmail and healthy boundaries and taught her if she wants the life of success then she has to take control of her life rather then letting the family control it for her. My girlfriend could have been alot more successful if it was not for her siblings and parents constantly using emotional blackmail and draining her.

@@g60force Yes got that under control. My girlfriend just cuts her mum off for months without talking to her if she tries the emotional blackmail. I taught her that trick. I said you teach people how you want to be treated and what you will tolerate, so if they cross those boundaries block them to show them you mean business.
Parental control - sounds like most ethnicities. Also included is the emotional blackmail and guilt trips ethnic parents are masters of. I come from an italian background. So much of this Thai woman's experience i can relate to word for word. Family for me has been a curse and an obstacle.
I agree with you 100%, Dan!! I met and lived around all my Thai family before I decided to buy land and plan a house with my Thai wife. Fortunately, they are the BEST Thailand can offer. They NEVER ask for anything and act honored that I spend time with them. They give my wife hell when she gives me hell. LOL
The moral of the story is...as soon as possible get to know the parents and family. In this case impossible to live near family. But let's keep in mind, there are good Thai girls and families also. It's pretty naive to put all Isaan girls in the same box.

A thirty-something year old co-worker I became friends with in Taiwan (Taiwan, not Thailand) was obligated to cook dinner for her parents daily right after work, and she “wasn’t allowed” to have a boyfriend. I helped her sneak away a couple times so she could visit with a local dude she liked, explaining through her translation abilities to her folks that as a non-Chinese-speaking newbie foreigner I needed her help to navigate paperwork & shopping and such. Thirty-something years old and still having a curfew- she’d (fairly) successfully lived abroad before: that’s why her English was so good. Not very woman in our workplace was shackled to her family so strictly, but it was common enough. It’s not just Asia: when it came down to family vs “her own” life, my ex-wife (French Canadian dysfunctional family) was “done in” by her family’s guilt-trips and her (admirable) sense of right an wrong. I did not anticipate her being so bound to her family when we first courted.

My Thai lady had zero interest in going back to her village. Luckily her mother died when she was 12 and her father passed away just a few years ago. She's pretty independent and living with me in Australia since 1999
I think the dysfunctional homes are quite common in asia. It's usually the insecure mom that's nuts. It's common in the US as well but the families are not as close which sometimes allows the children to escape the clutches of a dysfunctional parent. It's really disgusting how they're so selfish to ruin the opportunities their children have.

My long term GF was great and mom was fine. GF was very shy and wanted to go anywhere to go boating or hikes . Big. lost where I got bored and started some outside ladies. She left and changed her name as Thais do Not all Thai ladies are bad.but I paid some rent for her and she still came by the house weekly to clean and take care. When I was a teenager I was working for a local businessman in the UK he had bought two houses and had two divorces losing both houses each time that was enough for me two really put off the idea of marriage also my father had bipolar and when he would go for a manic stage would always attempt to get his half of the money out of the house that we lived in to leave my mother and the children eventually had to be taken off the property title or my mum said she's just going to divorce him after being with my partner for many years and going to many weddings and being pressured into getting married I said to her look at only marry you if there was some kind of financial prenup agreement she said no we never did get married but we are in the process of breaking up and guess who gets to keep their house me I learn from other people's mistakes Marriage is a legal contract or was the other person breaks it you are liable to be messed over doesn't seem like a fair deal to me but I'm incredibly miserable right now considering going to Thailand in the low season between May and July next year and I believe I will be considered easy pickings to these bar girls I am completely inoculated or so I hope I am
