I can fully understand why learning Thai is so difficult. Maybe you have to look for another teacher who will not distract you so much so you can finish your homework. Her English is excellent. Great for a teacher.

I was in Chiang Mai about 10 years ago. A few places that stuck in my head are the Buddhist Temple on top of the mountain, the Queen's Gardens (or Arboretum?), and a restaurant that was a big open air affair under a roof with a pond on one side and a waterfall on the other. If you go to the gardens do not miss the hot houses with the orchids from all over the world!

LJ she speaks English so well, I am impressed. I would love some Thai lessons from her, when I am next in Phuket. I wouldn't mind learning the basic Thai from her for the 8 days I am there. I have also made up my mind to learn how to cook Thai food. Who knows I could come back to Perth and have my own restaurant. She is cute.

I studied Thai at the Defense Language Institute - East Coast while in the Army (1968-1969). You're right... Thai is a very difficult language because of the different tones and Thai characters: 42 consonants & 28 vowels each represented by a different symbol or combination of symbols. I had a Thai teacher (Khun Kru) that I adored. She adopted me into her family as I was the youngest student (23) in her class of five. I studied for almost a year and became quite proficient. We were in class 6 hours a day - 5 days a week. Not too bad for Army duty at the height of the Vietnam War. The Institute was a contract school (Crowell Collier) in Washington D.C. PUT IN THE EFFORT - it will be well worth it! 👍

A few years back I was in Thailand playing golf with the companies team. Well I met a Thai girl at the bar and well, you know what happened. So the next morning I had breakfast with the girl (long time) and went to the golf course. I told the boss that today I was going to learn the Thai language and hit a hole in one. The caddy told me something in Thai, I thought where the first hole was. So I took the shot. The boss got excited and the caddy kept saying H̄lum p̄hid. Wait, H̄lum p̄hid I've heard that before. That's what the girl kept saying last night. That H̄lum p̄hid, what does that mean ? Caddy looks at me in astonishment and say's, H̄lum p̄hid mean wrong hole !

Been here almost 6 years and my language skills are appalling! It's a difficult language to learn and when you get past 60 it becomes even harder! But, with a teacher like that I think I would pay a lot more attention and take many more classes!!

Actually no. Not trying to insult or offend you. I was fluent at B2 level after 1 year. It's actually quite easy to learn and simplified grammar. I didn't learn to read but my speaking was good. I even learnt fluent isaan in the same amount of time. But not together. The issue is.... People make excuses for not even really trying... It's too hard, I'm too old... And then. .... Wonders why after x amount of years cannot speak a basic conversation. What really happens... No motivation and laziness... Coupled with poor quality study habits, speaking English to women all the time.... Rather than saying... I'm lazy bugger. I'll just blame the fact I'm old and it's difficult. I forced everyone to talk Thai to me... I consistently studied and then I actively used it. I didn't watch English TV
