I've had a similar experience with Windows updates. I needed to use my laptop for an event but I was greeted with an update after opening the lid. "No problem, it'll be done in 15 minutes," I thought. Nope. 30 minutes go by...still stuck. 45 minutes go by. I need my laptop in 10 minutes. 15 minutes go by. I give up using my laptop and carry on without it. The event is over and I have to leave my location. I end up walking around in public with a laptop opened because this thing wouldn't finish updating. An hour and a half later, it decided to give me my pc back. Unbelievable.

9:12 Even when I was using Windows 10 I switched to LibreOffice and deserted MS Office after few years of using it, yes it's maybe takes some time to get use to new office (for me at least) but after I getting used to it, I didn't need MS Office anymore. So except to donations for the LibreOffice project (that I choose to do help them to keep develop the software) I save a lot of money, over the years, I paid hundreds of dollars to Microsoft for Windows and Office 365, so it's really was worth for me to switch first to LibreOffice and second to Linux.

@Rex-zm7xb

But the learning curve of Linux is higher than Windows. That's one reason a normal consumer will most probably never use it. And the dependence of terminal for Linux is also higher than like CMD for Windows. So you need to learn some of the code for it as well. I was using pop os(which is based on Ubuntu) for a while before switching back to windows 10( which I don't like a lot, especially when Microsoft is just screwing up every update). But had to switch due to lack develop support for the platform. Now, I am kindoff thinking to return to pop os using dual boot.

A big tip for anyone looking to get into Linux. When you are installing, make sure you check the "install third party software" or similarly worded option to save yourself a lot of potential headaches. The resolution scaling thing is indeed extremely annoying, saying that as a guy with a 4k monitor with a 1080p monitor on each side.

I think that the best way to start with Linux is Virtual Machine on Windows or OS. I use Ubuntu 16.04 and Ubuntu 18.04 (native) for programming and robotics purposes (C++, Python, Rust, .Net Core). I have never experienced any problem with Ubuntu. I think that it is great that the final user has a choice (of course with some exceptions). This is a beautiful of free market and democracy.

I had been dabbling with Linux as a hobby for about 20 years. About 14 months ago I just got completely fed up with Windows and Evilcorp and put Fedora with KDE Plasma on my newest daily driver PC. It is AWESOME. I haven't had a single issue that required my manual intervention in all that time. I can't say the same for another PC I have with Arch on it. Fedora has SELinux integrated into it and Firewalld on with strict settings out of the box - VERY secure. I'm a compulsive tinkerer so I love Linux and Plasma.

You should know it is for the average daily user. Ubuntu actually targets that. It isn't really a necessity to use terminal in Linux it's a choice. If you want more software you should use flatpak also try out WINE. And if you don't like Libreoffice use OpenOffice or perhaps zoho docs or something. Currently Linux has a lot of support from big companies. Games are also available not just one a lot (5000+). Since you listen to music, spotify is available through flatpak and sublime text as well.
@jojipy8309
@jojipy8309 3 года назад
The only thing that's not possible in Linux is.. nothing. If you have to play the games with kernel based anticheat, then simply just make a vfio/qemu virtual machine with pci-passthrough and pass a GPU into it. Then you can do everything that's also possible in Windows, as you're literally running Windows, but in a secured environment. Also, the entire point of using Linux is to find alternatives (per chance maybe also FOSS). You're in a new environment. Most applications by now have native support for Linux which is why that isn't a necessity anymore. Honestly though, every time I hear "I don't like LibreOffice because of XYZ feature" I always think of, how spoiled humans are, to not wanting to do additional 2 clicks to get the exactly same result. It just has grown annoying and to a non-problem to me. I may sound based, but Linux is honestly better in every way, there's no denying that...

@@jojipy8309 It's been 11 months lol. I actually use Libreoffice but there are times something in the document gets altered. I do plan on making a setup like that in future. Thanks. I too think Linux is amazing and I'm never going back to Windows or something else.

Windows updates can be stressful, i can't even shut down unless i update unlike Linux i can update and break it and continue the updates very flexibly. Some software support can be difficult. This is going to be subjectional point of view, dont get mad: Linux for students and CS students in particular is not necessary, but id say almost certainly recommended. Im a diehard fan of windows, i love how things just work most of the time, but in order to truly appreciate the work MS done i had to use several linux distributives for work, education and entertainment purposes. I used mint, ubuntu, arch, debian and, sigh, gentoo. If you are a developer\system administator you absolutely must set up a linux working environment at least once (just to be familiar with tech majority of internet connected professional stations use). Once everything is set up and running you get outstanding OS designed to help you get best results at your task: setting up server, database, code and compile programs, even working in office and just surfing web would work great and stable. The downside is if you need your machine to do more than that (ie be an all-round mediacenter-work-gaming station at once) windows does it all better. Linux provides good amount of documentation and packages to do almost any PC related task, it also gives you freedom to manage your system however you want, but for most people thats unneecssary complication, on windows you just download an executable and install the thing you need if its there. You have to make some effort to shoot yourself in the foot while linux gives you gun and expects you to decide for yourself wheter you need that additional hole or not.

And about MS office : Try to create a math formula - Yea, have to pay extras for that. I tried that, impossible. I find Libre Office easier to use in every way. GNOME isn't good for old and weak computers too. I'd recommend XFCE or something. Why do people complain about multiple displays support? I've never had this problems on any Linux distro. I haven't tried that on a desktop computer, but plugging in monitors, TVs, projectors with VGA, HDMI, VGA-to-HDMI to laptops was as simple as it should be. Driver support may vary, but in most cases it's simpler than in Windows. There may be problems with some rare obscure devices, and with some wifi modules. The latter can be solved with just one line in a terminal, 'sudo modprobe something'. If you have a driver problem, try Manjaro. I've found it does better autodetecting job.

If you are using Ubuntu 18.04 then the problems you are having could have already been solved in the latest release since new kernel == better hardware support. Try installing Ubuntu 20.04 or just wait 2 weeks tell Ubuntu 20.04 releases and try that and you should get a better experience, also despite whatever people might say online Ubuntu is not the best Linux distro, it's not even near being the best Linux distro and almost any other popular Linux distro(Manjaro, PopOS, Zorin, Elementary OS, etc.) are better for Desktop Linux distributions.

I've been using Linux for about a year now alongside of windows and for me it has been a much more pleasant experience. Adding to the LibreOffice argument: I'd don't think it's that dissimilar to MS Office (it even has some of the same annoying bugs). So I'd say if you were already familiar with MS Office you probably won't have a hard time transitioning. (And if you still don't like LibreOffice Writer, just use LaTeX. It's much nicer, though it does have a learning curve)

One more MAJOR drawback with Linux:- I had Fedora Workstation 24. It did not support my Old Graphic Card and hence did not have driver support for my Old Graphics Card(Nvidia GeForce 8400GS). As I didn't have driver support , so when I clicked on "Upgrade to Version 25" the screen went black , system crashed and no Display for 10 mins. All installed programs for Java, Python , GNU/G++ were uninstalled as they were not compatible with Fedora 25. No GPU support screws your booting/updating process.
@Sergey_Latyshev
@Sergey_Latyshev 4 года назад
I think it was a problem of Fedora, not Linux in general. I had some problems with upgrading its version too. Try Ubuntu or Manjaro, they pick and propose the right drivers. I've been using Ubuntu on a computer with 8800GS fine until it (the card) got broken.

It depends on what type of games are you playing. I play single player games and the framerate isn't an issue for me anymore even with iGPU. Wine has gone way better than it used to be. I started using it in 2016 but for gaming I got into it in 2017 and fully ditching windows in 2019.

WSL is good for navigating the Windows filesystem using Linux commands. But it isnt a full Linux install. But if you're looking to learn Linux commands, I suggest using WSL for a while, and dual booting later.

You kind of mentioned it in the video, but I'm still surprised I didn't see this in the comments. Although most of the pros and cons you mentioned are true for most linux distros, some of them wouldn't have happend in certain distros, and other distros would present more problems. Using arch will give you more problems setting up than ubuntu, but another distro like linux mint would make certain things easier. Also using kde would actually make it easy to fix your monitor problem with the con that it's sometimes buggy (haven't seen to much of this lately though). If you want to try it out I would recommend manjaro (KDE) because I prefer pacman/yay over apt and it's also easy to get started like ubuntu. As a warning though, it's rolling release so it does has the con of being more unstable than debian-based distros but has more updated software.

Re-upload or not lol, I still like the concept behind this video and its message :) Linux DOES have a learning curve, it isn't just a Windows clone. I came from a very low technical base in Windows and I've been using Linux now for about 2 years... I'll never go back. BUT, I only do basic stuff on computers and Linux, once you get the hang of it, does basic stuff really well. Very new equipment can also prove challenging as can some wifi adapters and printers, but it is getting better all the time. I'm not a gamer, but I suspect that gaming would also be more complicated on Linux. Libreoffice, I'm sure, also has a learning curve, but for the basic documents and spreadsheets I need to do, it's fine. I'm not a fan of the Gnome desktop either, but the Ubuntu version is probably one of the easier ones to learn and use lol. I prefer Cinnamon or KDE desktop environments both of which are more like Windows in look and feel, but each to their own :) For Windows people changing over to Linux, I would probably recommend Mint and Zorin as the two easiest distros to start with and learn from. Here are a couple of links you might find useful for your monitor problem: linuxconfig.org/how-to-configure-your-monitors-with-xrandr-in-linux winaero.com/blog/linux-mint-20-and-lmde-4-details-revealed/ Thanks again, I enjoyed your commentary :) And I subscribed lol.

7:10 answer askubuntu.com/. Evrey question about Ubuntu that you have can be answered there, Linux is openscorce whitch means that if you have an error on a machiene then someone else has had the same problem and has posted it on this site, it gose with all distros, Debien (ubuntus father), Fedora, OpenSuse, Arch, and so on. Arch is one of the largest. wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Main_page

Watching the comment, I’m not sure if you’ve said why you wouldn’t consider working on a Mac (got Mac pro as my laptop daily work laptop and a pc for gaming, with Ubuntu vIrtualized on it for light dev work.) Macbook Pro is a threat, if expensive, middle ground where you can use your video editor, run your dev server live and code all on one machine.

8:00 sorry budy, thats a con for you, i havent had any problems with anything other than my vr headset (oculus cv1, facebook shit), i like a argument i saw, when you go to buy a mac computer and buy accessories for it, you will search for the ones compatible with macs, but for some reason when people switch to linux they just expect everything to work, if you plan on using linux you should only buy from brands that support your right to choose your OS, apart from that, great video! Hope youve been having a great time on GNU Linux

The problem with linux in my experience is that alot of the functions are not supported... as in you plug in the hdmi out of your laptop to a TV and the damn thing wouldnt work... i would have to restart the system in order for the linux laptop to work... where as with windows its much straight forward with just plugging in the cable and it would work with no problems... Also some random small programs that you used to like , you cannot install them anymore... Trouble installing basic programs aswell , if you are not versatile with the system... but there was maybe one good thing , which is it was faster. Also some programs are bugged .. some dont even work even if they are supposed to... So in my case i still go with windows on my laptop

Basically Linux is the best especially for developers however there’s not much support for a lot of big things that people use like photoshop which despite common belief is not Linux being bad, it’s the developers being lazy
@Rex-zm7xb
@Rex-zm7xb 4 года назад
You have to think both ways Devs think there are not many people using Linux, so they don't develop for it and people don't switch to Linux because there is not much developer support. This is the cursed cycle we are going through. But it is slowly changing.

It is a bad idea to use the dual boot on the same harddrive. Because due of Windows updates you can one time loose both systems. This happened to me when I used Debian as the second boot system. Something happened with the Grub boot loader after the Windows update. Now I use Windows 10 as my main system, and Ubuntu 20.04 on the VirtualBox.
