Great review, thanks. I don't know why, but here in Switzerland the price has now come down to around $2000. It's hard to find the EF 100-400 for much less, so it's become far more accessible. May have to get it!

Hi if I'm choosing between the Sony system with a significantly cheaper 200-600mm and brighter max aperture, how would it stack up with the canon 100-500mm? At the time before I purchase my Sony, I dun mind considering the canon but the cost of the 100-500mm is the reason I didn't go for it. I'm wondering if anyone can let me know if I miss anything when I use Sony instead of Canon.
Hi Thanks for the comment. I would probably do some more research with the Sony lens. There are so many pros and cons to each set up. The Canon lens will allow you focus at subjects very close because of the 100mm focal range a close focus optics. You need to check with the Sony as i've heard that the 600mm isn't actual 600mm range. It falls short unless you use extenders. Ive never used it personally but check these things over and buy what you think is best for you. The 7.1 compared to 6.3 is barely noticeable but the Sony lens has internal zoom which makes it much larger to travel with. The Canon is very compact for travel. Hope that helps.
I have both and i must tell you that the rf100-500 is considerable sharper than the sony 200-600. both provide excellent results but in terms of detail the advantage goes for the canon.
The biggest issues with sony for wildlife is that their sensors have incredibly slow readout speeds, so rolling shutting will be a big problem. Also, their burst shooting speed is only 10fps and that's with lossy-compressed images.

At the moment I have a Sigma 150-600 C and am contemplating this lens as a replacement, but just for the AF compatibility with my R8, would the step up be worth it?
It's worth the investment, I was initially using my R5 with the EF 100-400mm MKII due to RF lenses being hard to find due to Covid. Once I finally got one I completely stopped using my EF lenses, and the Sigma can't compete with the RF lenses.
Unfortunately, i've not tried the Canon R10. A few things worth considering is that the R10 is an APSC sensor so the 100-500 is effectively a 160-800mm lens. So you will have much greater focal reach. However, the camera only goes to ISO 32000 and is limited to 15fps.
